Nintendo does it again. Now they are taking multiple screens to the console. Now when we finally get one separated screen in our hands. Will we be able to play Pokémon the way we always wanted? And that is of course..

With an always available Pokédex in our hands!

Never has the experience been so close! We may now be able to look at our Pokédex at any time when wondering : "Hey what is that Pokémon?".

- Dexter : .....

I think this could bring a whole new reality to things when you can almost feel that the Pokédex is in your hands!

Question is: Will it happen?

If so why / why not?

If so would you like to display other interfaces like your items, town map etc.

My personal answer:

I think that if you really want to get the feeling of having a true Pokedex in your hands. All other interfaces should instead be displayed on the tv. If you really need to check where you are at the same time as you walk around, a mini-map could be implemented. However, you could be managing your items close to you like they where in your backpack. Doing this while your pikachu is on the big screen some meters in front of you waiting for you call, would also feel quite realistic.

Summary:
I'm not sure yet, that's why I want your opinion.

PS. Hope you enjoy the pic as much as I enjoyed photoshopping it ;).

Sounds awesome to me. I'm genuinely excited about this idea; if implemented well it could also be like having your own Pokétch/Pokégear, surely. And that would be even more awesome.

That's an incredibly gimmicky feature.

The WiiU GamePad, while similar to the DS set up in having two screens, is differentiated in that it is dynamic. That is, the first screen need not be tied to the second. This allows for the possibility of multiplayer Pokemon RPG's without having to split screen. Or, with a large enough TV screen, go for split screen with two WiiU GamePads, but go on separate adventures in the same game as your menu options no longer need to pause the big TV.

Really, making the WiiU Gamepad exclusive for Pokedex usage is incredibly limited. Having the gamepad with its analogue stick and touch screen just begs for it to be used for a general menu interface. Now, you can continue walking along your adventure without having to stop because you have to check your bag, Pokedex, or Pokegear-like device.

Wow! I've never actually thought of that. Playing a match against your friend while showing only the intensity of the match on big screen would be awesome. It would almost be like a cinematic experience. But then maybe the controller could have different usage depending on if you where playing single or multiplayer. Its just that I have always wanted to pick up the pokedex in my hand in the middle of a fight. Just like you said, "the first screen need not be tied to the second". What I currently do is lookup every new Pokémon I am uncertain with on the bulbapedia. And don't misunderstand me, I love bulbapedia. Its just that, using your pc to look up Pokémon dont feel real enough.

Is there any Pokémon game in which you can pick up the pokedex in the middle of a fight?

It seems in some ways plausible. I don't know exactly how but I see potential.
