The article on the 'M Glitch Pokémon has this text:
For some reason, 'M will appear through the Old Man Glitch regardless of the player's name.

Isn't this caused by the fact that the player's name always contains the null "end string" character? (hex 0, like its identifier number)

I'd edit this into the article myself, but the page is protected.

Hmm. I suppose it is possible, but doesn't a maximum-length name have no null terminator? Space was precious back in those days, you know - every byte counts.

I think this would have been better to be posted on the article's talk page...even if the page is protected, you should still be able to post on the talk page.

There doesn't seem to be an edit button on the article or its talk page.

Edit: I knew I'd seen this before...

Your name occupies a string of eleven characters, but you can only define up to seven. In custom names, directly following the last defined character is the end-string (hex 50) which corresponds to Missingno or L80. Everything after that is null, which calls 'M or L zero.

I was slightly wrong about the specifics, but it explains why 'M appears.

The article on 'M is not protected. Are you logged in? Because only logged-in users may edit articles.

I didn't know that you had to log in. Most "wiki" sites I visit don't force you to register to add anything, so I didn't try that.

The top bar on the page also says "This page is protected. You can view its source." when I hover over it, so I assumed it would be protected for all users.

Bulbapedia requires users to log to make edits. I thought it was stupid at first, too, but considering the amount of work it takes to create an account, it doesn't matter much.
