Will and Lucian - related?

Ever since HGSS has come out, I've seen a lot of Japanese fanart implying that Will and Lucian are related somehow--usually brothers.

Does the game say anything about this? I haven't noticed anything, but maybe it's a post-game "bonus" or something mentioned in the guide?

I mean, they both have purple hair, they both cover their eyes in some way, and they both use Psychic Pokemon, so maybe that means something?
 
Is Erika related to the Kimono girls? No.

Just because two characters look the same, it doesn't mean they are the same.

Word of advice, don't believe fanart.

Bad example. Unlike Erika and the Kimono Girls, which only have similar designs, Will and Lucian have similar designs, specialize in the same Pokemon Type, and are both member's of their regions Elite Four.

Anyways, as far as I can tell, there really isn't any connection between the two, other than the obvious similarities that I just listed. I think that if there was, they would have already mentioned something about it in DPPt.
 
Well, unlike Agatha and Bertha, there's not even the names to go by (which are also similar in Japanese, Kikuko and Kikuno). We got Will and Lucian, Itsuki and Goyo.

And unfortunately there's no Fame Checker in HGSS.

This. Not to mention some of the fanart you REALLY don't want to see. I only wish I could unsee some of them... o__o

I don't think we can count some of the similarities though. The only thing that might work as a reason would be something regarding their hair/eye color, since that SHOULD be based on genetics realistically speaking (which I know is probably not a good idea, putting realism into pokemon xD) Unfortunately we have no eye colors to go by for either of them. Their hair colors are very different shades of purple, but there is the factor of recessive traits or what have you. Though if Will's eye mask thing also = glasses, that could stand a point, since needing glasses is usually family linked...

Though I can't deny the fact they seem similar to each other, despite the fact that when you look at them they really do look different.
 
This is probably one of these Bertha/Agatha things. The fans think they're related but we'll never know for sure.
 
xD; if characters were related due to looking alike, some would say Volkner is related to Yondaime from Naruto.

It is a coincidence, though. Not as creepy as the Agatha/Bertha similarities...

Besides, the Yondaime isn't in Pokemon, so that's immediately out of the question.

Will and Lucian are both in Pokemon, so there's a possibility? Can't really say for sure...

Or that purple is like the primary colour of all Psychic trainers. Sure Sabrina doesn't have purple hair, but her shirt is purple.

The difference is that the only real difference between those two is that Bertha looks genuinely nice.

You know, this argument would be more effective if they came from the same franchise. Volkner could have easily been made as a reference to Naruto considering that Pokemon does like to slip in pop culture reference here and there.

A better one would be Wally and Aaron. They both have green hair that sticks up :p

Well, after some more investigating, it turns out this was a bunch of fangirls getting together and forming the "Will and Lucian Are Brothers Popularization Committee." It's a tag on Pixiv.

So yes, it looks like this was just a fantasy dug up by some fangirls. Still funny, though.

My personal opinion is that they COULD be related like Bertha and Agatha, but we will probably won't know for a while since there is no VS Checker in HGSS to find out.

People joke about them being related, but are serious about Volkner possibly being a reference to Naruto.

What I find amazing is that I haven't seen a thread about Will and Lucian's similarities until now. I'm honestly surprised they didn't use Will to argue that "game freak is running out of ideas"

Considering how integrated HGSS is with every other generation having many cameos from characters from multiple generations, if they were related, it would have been mentioned.

Yeah, Agatha and Bertha haven't been confirmed, but considering that they look almost identical, one could assume that it is implied they are related--or Agatha is in the witness protection program.

Honestly, I find it surprising that people would argue for this while at the same time argue against the Buck/Flint relation when Buck clearly states he has a brother in the Elite 4.

Using that to argue against the whole Erika/Kimono girls thing is pretty bad considering it ignores the original point of "similar designs"

Seriously though, nothing is mentioned about Erika being a geisha or in anyway being affiliated with Kimono girls. Its the same thing as saying that people with white collared shirts are all affiliated with each other.

All the Fame checker ever did was provide a convenient way to access little tidbits of trivia a second time in the games.

Platinum has way more trivia about the gym leaders by speaking to them at the Match Place and the Villa. I mean half the gym leader trivia in FRLG was stuff you find in the gym (the sign, gym guy and the leader's intro).

I am sure HGSS has just as much if not more trivia per gym leader than Platinum due to phone calls and being found outside the gym. Not to mention that some of the people you can register for your phone is devoted solely to trivia.

The Fame checker never added more trivia to the games. It was merely a device to hold them.

Will and Lucian? I like to think so. But here's another one, looks at Rebecca and Lorelei's (game) hairstyle, glasses, and eye shape. Then look at Rebecca and Will or Rebecca and Lucian.

See the family resembelance?
