So I'm a Gardevoir trainer, right? I want to have a good moveset and all so I don't get my ass kicked by all the Japs on PBR and whatnot when I get my HeartGold game. However, when I look at most strategies involving Gardevoir, almost all reccomend using Will-O-Whisp, one of Gardevoir's egg moves. Now my HG starter will be my new shiny Ralts that doesn't know Will-O-Whisp, leaving most of these strategies out of the question. Gardevoir can, however, learn toxic which I would've thought would be much more effective than Will-O-Whisp, given that its damage rises each turn. Given all that I hear about WIll-O-Whisp being useful against physical attackers, I wanted to ask why that this is, and why Toxic wouldn't be just as effective.

W-o-W cripples things like Scizor who would break your Gardevoir into pieces. It cuts physical attackers attack into half and you can sit there and Calm Mind up and destroy the physical sweeper, who shouldn't be able to touch you then.

Toxic is for stalling. Gardevoir COULD Toxic stall but it's not the greatest thing for stalling. Gardevoir is more of a wall-type Pokemon, that's why it's recommended you use status moves, so it cripples to opposing team.

Hope that some-what helped.

You could go Toxic/Wish/Protect and probably do that effectively with Gardevoir. Last move could be Psychic for STAB or something better like Thunderbolt.

@SharKing: Damnit.
@Insomniac: Ah, that makes sense now. Still, I don't want the lack of the move to keep me from using the shiny one.
@Dexington: Toxic/Wish/Thunderbolt or Icy Wind/Psychic is what I'm looking at.

The problem with Toxic is that you'll be absolutely walled by steel types. Just be aware of that.

Gardevoir can run Thunderbolt and Focus Blast, so it's not completely walled by Steel types. That said, neither of those moves is particularly noteworthy on a support Pokemon such as this one, so take that as you will

Thats the same as saying he will be walled by firetypes if he choses WoW:dodgy:

I would recommend WoW/Wish/Psychic/Protect, then only Houndoom wall you completely, but Heatran will also be a major problem. On the plusside you can hit Blaziken and Infearnape for super effective damage. Using Focus Blast instead of Protect will get rid of both Houndoom and Heatran problems (well at least slightly).

Gardevoir's Sp. Atk stat is nothing to laugh at or push aside, it can really hurt things. Even though it is a support Pokemon, a Focus Blast or Thunderbolt will normally 2HKO anything its super effective against other than super walls (Blissey, Regi's)

I prefer will-o-wisp because it cuts down the opponet's attack. And also Reflect will help your gardevoir's survivability.

i'm kinda wondering why gardecoir can't learn the will-o-wisp Tm...?

anywho, yea considering gardevoirs def it can hold it's own against sp moves but not physically, will-o-wisp cuts the attack and holds off physical sweepers that could easily ohko it

W-o-W is good against physical attackers and has good effect damage.

Toxic gets stronger per turn, but is pointless on steel types.

If you can only have one, go for W-o-W. That said, try and integrate both moves into your team, so long as it won't waste the potential of another member.

yea i know, but most moves i've seen that can be learned through breeding can also be learned via TM or move tutor

Some can't though. I really don't know why (if you can learn the move anyway, why not let us do it the easy way?). Vulpix has the same issue with Energy Ball. She can learn it through breeding, but can't via TM

anyway, let's get to solving the problem
Fling + flame orb
burns em and does damage, just takes up your item slot
