We all love the little guy, but it does seem like its been going with Thunderbolt, Quick Attack, Iron Tail, and Volt Tackle for a long time now. (Maybe not, but it has to me I guess)

So, do you guys think Pikachu will learn a new attack anytime soon? I don't see Iron Tail or Volt Tackle going anywhere anytime soon, and Thunderbolt seems to be a staple just because it is the best move to show Pikachu's strong electrical abilities...but perhaps Quick Attack can be replaced?

What move/moves would you like to see Pikachu learn, if any? Or do you like it as is?

Well there's slam, feint, light screeen, and couple fighting moves pikachu can learn and maybe discharge pikachu has used but its never been referred to by name.

I doubt pikachu will learn any new moves for a long time, but they sure are fond of iron tail and thunderbolt, they forgot thunder, double edge and a few others like agility almost completely, last two completely, thunder may make a return but I can't see other two being used again.

I thought Pikachu knew Agility instead of Quick Attack...

The anime Pokémon only ever have four moves at a time, just like in the games. So, if Pikachu were to learn a new move, an old one would have to be deleted. Apparently, this means he doesn't know how to use ThunderShock, Thunder, etc., anymore.

I'll tell you what he should learn... Can you imagine...? Get ready for it... Seismic Toss. How badass would it be to see Pikachu chucking someone around the size of a mini planet.

Not exactly true; there have been cases that say otherwise. On the other hand, it's easy to say that they usually only demonstrate four moves every so often, since that's all that's usually needed of a pokémon throughout an episode.

The question should be, "Will Pikachu ever need to learn a new move?" And that's unlikely, with Iron Tail being its only alt move aside from its electric attacks and having a limited effective TM pool that won't make it godsome.

The anime has gotten around this issue throughout D/P by having it (and others) learn new 'techniques' such as the spinning dodge thing, or the tail trick it picked up against Raichu. This means Pikachu can learn new skills to keep things interesting, but keeping the same attacks that have all pretty much been tacked to it as iconic attacks by now.

I doubt it will learn any new moves, like, ever. But it will almost certainly learn new tricks to use in battles.

Bull. Have you already forgotten Ash's Snorlax's battle against Greta? It used at least 6 moves then. And that's just one of many examples.

If they wanted to add tension to the Ash/Paul relationship, a great way to do that would be to have Pikachu learn Reversal, an egg move in the games, since Reversal works best when the user is at its lowest possible health. (Yes, there is precedent, Chikorita had Vine Whip and May's Bulbasaur had Petal Dance.)

I would like to see Pikachu pull Feint out of its ass in time for a final showdown with Paul's Electabuzz (will probably be Electivire) just to see the look on Paul's face. >_>

Well, before Pikachu has used these moves:

Most Used:
Thunderbolt
Iron Tail
Volt Tackle/Quick Attack

Rarely used:
Thunder
Slam
Tail Whip
Tackle
ThunderShock

Used once:
Double Edge
Leer

Moves it can learn (level up in games) that it has never used:
Growl
Feint
Discharge
Light Screen
Double Team

But those moves are weaker than ones I has used already and not sure if feint will be learned as Pikachu has not battled many pokemon using protect or detect as far as I know.

If Pikachu had to learn a new move, I'd like to see move tutors brought in and bring in the possibility of thunderpunch, signal beam, or even magnet rise.

Like I suggested in another thread (a long while ago), Pikachu should learn a just in case attack. Like if Iron Tail and its electric moves are ineffective, but the move is used rarely only using them in certain cases like Paul's Electivire. Because personally I'm having a real hard time believing that Pikachu could knock out Paul's future Electivire as is. The only effective move it would know is quick attack and that would get boring. While yes they could just ignore iron tail's ineffectiveness on electric types. Quick attack and iron tail would get way too repetitive. I think something like feint in case Electivire uses protect or Pokemon that use protect. And if feint is portrayed like it is in PMD (attacks even when the opponent doesn't use protect) then it could be a handy move to have.

There are some other moves I could go with. Just using the current generation: Hidden Power, Return, rollout (would go with the spinning thing it already does), and Reversal.

Pikachu has used more than four moves before, as have lots of Pokémon (Dragonite, anyone?), but they don't do it anymore. The problem is, if they are going by the games, Pikachu can't really learn any new moves without TMs, as he has already maxed out his moveset (unless Thunder was from a TM). I think they should just not make such a big deal out of moves, and have them use whatever the writers think is appropriate. Light Screen would be cool, though, if they had to teach him something.

I actually thought in the anime they could learn more then 4 moves. There were some Pokemon that used like 5 or 6 moves in one battle. Unless most like I'm missing something here. But I think Feint awesome move to learn.

Of late, the anime is following the rules a lot more than it used to - and has explicitly pointed out a few times recently that Pokemon have 4 known moves - and the main Pokemon seem to be sticking by that too.

I can't see Thunderbolt, Iron Tail or Volt Tackle ever being replaced as they're all signature attacks, so the last slot is really a random Quick Attack/Agility or whatever else.

Does Pikachu use Thunder anymore?

Right now, Pikachu's four standard moves are: Thunderbolt, Iron Tail, Quick Attack, and Volt Tackle.
I doubt Pikachu is going to learn any new moves soon (whether they be level up moves or TMs). This is considering the fact that Pikachu is almost never used anymore. The writers are showing more emphasis on pokemon not pertaining to Ash's Pikachu, whether they be Ash's other pokemon (especially Hiko and Bui), Dawn's (especially Pip, do you know how much screentime Torch had it comparison), and Brock's (only Croagunk though, Sudo and Hapy do little).

Pikachu's still been used in almost every major battle throughout DP. The only difference this time around as opposed to previous regions is that the episodes focusing on the rest of the Pokemon have actually been GOOD.
