I expect he'll try to bring only Pikachu, like he's repeatedly done for new regions. And I expect it to bite him on the ass shortly after he gets to Kalos.

Aipom went to Sinnoh because she had a new Gen IV evolution to promote (she had been a ridiculously late capture in AG, so the whole thing had clearly been set-up as such from the start). Unless any of his current pokemon are given any added relevance in Generation VI, then I don't see it happening.

I doubt it. Ash has always sought to start fresh every time he enters a new region since the Hoenn region began. Whether that's a good thing or not, I can't say.

I suspect only Pikachu will, if anything, accompany him to the Kalos Region.

Unless the writers pull a Johto and have him slowly replace members of his team I only see Scraggy, maybe. That's only because if Iris got a cameo next gen then Axew could interact with Scraggy since they are heavily tied together. Perhaps meeting an evolved Axew, I think it would be interesting if Ash took Scraggy with him and caught seven or so new Pokemon. Keeping that inglorious little bastard in rotation would be nice, plus if rumors are correct Scraggy would have a nasty double weakness to Fairy-type which is of the second gym and it'd be an interesting obstacle to overcome. Yeah, I'm advocating for Scraggy to return because he's my favorite of Ash's Unova team.

I think the Johto style of things is much too awkward and disrupts the screen time the newer Pokémon need a lot. I think if Ash brings a Pokémon with him then he's either going to get a sudden new capture extremely late, or one of his current weaker Pokémon are getting a gen VI evolution. If the latter happens it'll be a first because Snorlax and Glalie are the only Pokémon to get new evolutions in their families, and neither of them can evolve into those. Apart from maybe Gible I think everyone else has at least been in rotation for a long enough time, so we probably won't be seeing something like Phanpy anytime soon.

So I think Ash will travel with just Pikachu and Kalos Pokémon at the start. Whether or not he wants to rotate older Pokémon for the League or post-League is anyone's guess.

Wasn't Phanpy also quite a late capture in Johto? He didn't get a whole lot time in his original run, let alone have a chance to evolve, which may be what compelled them to give him another chance following a substantial break.

Then again, I do remember there being some speculation that Gible would go to Unova, on account of his being such a late capture in Sinnoh, and due to Iris's love of dragons, and well, we're still waiting. :p

Palpitoad, Boldore and Unefzant got less screen time than Gible. But I think that Scraggy or Gible are the ones who would have a chance to go to Kalos pre league.

Gible had such a powerful moveset, and was so strong for a first-stage capture Pokemon, got a lot of screen time to Draco Meteor Piplup and got to shine at the league. There was no real reason for Gible to stay with Unova's emphasis on new elements and Gible's character being maxed out. The only sort of change in Gible's character that could be had was evolution, but we all know that opportunity doesn't happen for a lot of Ash's Pokemon. Phanpy only came back for BF because it was a filler arc and got pretty mundane treatment screen time regardless. Nope, Boldore and Unfezant got around the same amount of screen time in all of BW that Gible got in the near end of DP.

What about Palpitoad.

I know, that's why I said they were in rotation for longer rather than saying they got more screen time. :p We didn't see much of those three but it looks like Ash trained them off-screen for the Unova League. In DP everyone got a lot of screen time for training, and Gible seemed to get the least because he was newer, so he could count as a Pokémon that needs more training like Phanpy, but I guess he was still quite strong by the Sinnoh League.

I doubt that he'll bring anything other than Pikachu. That is better than going the Johto route where it just takes longer to replace the older Pokemon and makes it more difficult to give the new Pokemon time to shine. The only way he'd have another Pokemon with him is if one of them gets a new evolution in the next generation, but I'm not sure how likely that is either, so I'm pretty sure he'll just bring Pikachu.

I don't think so. Going into terra incognita with only a single Pokémon of inconsistent strength is tactically stupid, as Ash has found out with other regions. (He and Pikachu almost didn't survive their first day in Hoenn, and the fact that Aipom stowed away with him to Sinnoh ended up saving his butt when Pika got lost.) The Johto way of phasing out veteran Pokémon one by one is better, as it gives the rookies time to learn alongside experienced fighters.

Considering how the Johto Pokemon were mostly underdeveloped, I disagree. It really hurt them more than help them and it just made it longer for Ash to capture new Pokemon. There's a reason they haven't repeated that choice in AG, DP and BW. They learned from that mistake and I doubt that they're going to repeat it, especially when they have used Professor Oak as a means to leave all of Ash's older Pokemon instead of needing to dedicate a whole episode for each release. It wouldn't have mattered if Ash did have Pokemon when he was in Hoenn since he would have wanted to help Pikachu on his own and not risk hurting it. Aipom did help Ash out when they got to Sinnoh, but with Brock meeting up with him so quickly afterwards, he could have borrowed one of his Pokemon to capture Starly and help find Pikachu.

I don't think that it's a bad choice to start off on a new region with just one Pokemon. It's no different than a beginning trainer leaving on their own journey with just their starter Pokemon.

The Johto approach, in practice, just meant that the writers had to come up with contrived excuses for jettisoning his Kanto team in order to free up slots for the Gen II pokemon they actually wanted to advertise. It was also a mistake, I think, to keep Bulbasaur on the team at the expense of Heracross. Clearly, there was some reluctance to let go of the Gen I starters, presumably on account of how iconic and popular they had been in their day - all this effectively did, however, was slow down the pacing of the series and prolong the inevitable.
