Will the Generation 3 cartages go bad soon?

They won't die yet, but most, if not all Gen III cartridges lost their original battery which gave them the ability to count time. My Emerald finally gave about a month ago, all five of my Gen III games work though.

I don't actually think they can completely stop working.

I've been debating moving over my Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen teams over to Pokémon X because I fear like with the Generation 2 cartages that soon the Generation 3 carts will go bad. Has anyone had a Gen 3 cart die on them? Will they go bad in the next 5-10 years?

The Gen 3 carts used flash saves, so the batteries in RSE carts only powered their clocks. When their batteries die, time-based events will no longer work, but the saves won't delete themselves like in the RBY and GSC carts.

As for FRLG, they didn't have a clock at all, so no batteries to go bad.

When your battery dies, RSE will display a message on startup that "the internal battery has run dry. The game can be played, but clock-based events will no longer occur."

Re: Will the Generation 3 cartridges go bad soon?

I don't think they might die soon but maybe 40 years later. But anyway...I hope they don't die yet but remember that nothing lasts forever, if my beloved FireRed meets the same fate as my Super Nintendo then ill get really crazy but I hope it never happens. The part where I get criminaly insane obviously.

all of my gen 3 carts work fine, but RSE can no longer count time. my emerald's internal clock battery finally gave out last night after 9 years strong, and 600 hours of playtime

In RSE you have to be careful about what time to set the clock at the beginning of the adventure, since it won't tell any time other than that.
I went for 6pm to make sure i had access to shoal cave and therefore the part where Snorunt live.

What everyone else said. They shouldn't really as they use flash memory and the batteries just keep the clocks going. If they do start dying off, it'll probably be a number of years down the road.

Unfortunately the answer is yes eventually all data degrades to the point where it is no longer readable. However gen three has at least another 60 or 70 years plus before that happens. Gen two probably 40 to 60 years and gen one 35 to 55 years. It is true that the internal battery can and will die but the save data is stable unlike generation two where save data was stored as volatile memory. Not sure if they still do this but Nintendo can replace the battery but at the cost of your current save file.

No, but it doesn't hurt moving the teams anyway to their 6th generation (At least for RSE) counterparts. Thats what I did. I no longer have a gameboy advance.

Well, my Leaf Green save somehow deleted itself recently :[

I don't know if that has to do with age or something else...But it did leave me kind of paranoid about this matter. And in response I started shipping over my Purified Shadow Pokes en masse to Gen 4 and up.
