So as we have all seen, from Gens I to Gen IV, there has been a third version for every game. Red/Blue had Yellow, Gold/Silver had Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire had Emerald, and Diamond/Pearl had Platinum. But Gen V onward, it appears Gamefreak wants their newer titles to be less predictable. Instead of Grey for Black/White, we got Black 2/White 2. And instead of Z for X/Y, we got..... nothing. And for Sun/Moon, we have Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.

And this has started to make me think the chance of a third version in a future generation is very small, but possible. Do you think there will be one?

I really don't think so, no.

They've had the opportunity several times since Platinum and they've done different each time. Third versions are a thing of history and honestly, the franchise is better for it.

I wouldn't say it's impossible, just really unlikely by now, especially when this Ultra SuMo thing - which seem to be a mix of sequel and third version - could definitely grant more profits than a single third version.

Not gonna bet for it to be impossible though =P The poll is leaning towards the "yes" side since it's what gives more possibilities, while the "no" option is absolute, and given this is GameFreak; the latter is asking to lose a bet xD

So far there is nothing to suggest that USUM have elements of sequels apart from an expanded Pokedex, which Platinum had, too.

They're two versions as a gimmick to generate more sales. That was the original plan for Gray before Iwata forced Game Freak to do something more interesting.

Hmm? There's also nothing to suggest that, I think? Unless they've shown something I haven't seen.

It depends on how far they take the concept of an alternative story. It could be different enough that they are effectively sequels, or they could make them similar to the point of being essentially full on third versions. No way to tell yet x3

I'm thinking that the "alternate version" is a best way to say goodbye to third games. The third game are just slightly improved version of the original. Think about it we haven't got a third game since Platinum, and GF haven't gone back to the format since, I think they wanted to do something different in the franchise. In US/UM, I think it's more than just a third game, I would consider a sequel toward, but it's an "alternate version."

It remains to be seen how different they are than third versions. The least vague description we have is "Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon have been powered up with new additions to the story and features from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon," which is how a third version would be described.

One thing I'll agree on is that Game Freak will stick to paired versions no matter what because they're more profitable, if only slightly.

Third versions and alternate versions are synonyms.

I forget the exact article, but didn't GF say that third version games are dead at some point? I seem to remember it being brought up alot during the debates about a Special Edition Z being made.

They did back when ORAS was announced/released. Maybe not in the exact words you used, but they certainly said they'd prefer to surprise people and that doing regular 3rd versions wasn't surprising anymore. That said I'm not hopeful that USUM will be anything other than a souped up 3rd version. It may not be EXACTLY the same as Platinum and Emerald, but given the way they've chosen to introduce it I can't see it being a brand new story or anything. I think the most we can hope for is maybe a different trial here and there, but even then I'm not holding my breath. That said I'd love it if USUM weren't a typical game and had a secret up their sleeves.

They didn't say they were dead, unfortunately. Just that ORAS were less predictable than Z, which I am not sure they were, honestly. Most people expected both.

For B2W2 they did make a fuss over how different they were than third versions, but maybe they're hoping 5 years is long enough to forget, or that after 9 years a Platinum-like game might be appealing. And they'll probably abuse the "alternate storyline" for all its worth.

Sun/Moon are getting third versions, that being USUM. I see no reason to believe that these are sequels and all clues are indicating that they are effectively third version games, just with two of them now. It wouldn't be the first time that a generation had four versions.

You can also argue that BW2 are technically "third versions" themselves since, despite being sequels, they are still presented in much of the same manner. XY were the only games that did not have updated installements.

There is no proof that USUM are third versions. We need more info before confirming anything. The last third version we got was Platinum. I think GF has moved on from third versions.
