Now that Brock's gone, think they'll just keep replacing Ash friends every Generation? Or do you think Iris/Dento are the new Misty/Brock where they'll be here for three generations? What do you think?

I think writers will keep it the way it goes. There will be no reason for Iris/Dento to stay at the end of BW, exactly like there was no reason for other characters to stay. Sad but true.

Like Iris, Dento has Tracey rules applying to him. To a literal degree instead of figurative like it is for Iris. This could change if he gets a starter, then the regional character rule applies and he still won't go past this saga. I still have not decided on Iris in this matter, but it would more lean on Tracey rules for her since she apparently already has befriended a pokemon.

let's see what we've had so far:

ash : misty : brock
ash : misty : tracey
ash : misty : brock
ash : may : brock : max
ash : may : brock : max
ash : dawn : brock
ash : iris : dento

the writers don't need to replace every character, no. for example, for next generation's saga, the cast could look something like this:

ash : iris : new character/ash : dento : new character/ash : iris : dento : new character

but it could also look something like this:

ash : new character : new character

the way the writers do things is very irregular. they could make iris stick around for next generation, but they could also dump her at the end of the b/w saga. i personally think that either iris or dento will still be on the cast next generation. the character that would stay for next generation would eventually leave afterwards. if the writers decided to do otherwise, they'd consequently pull a brock. and we know how everyone feels towards brock... the good old boring brock. ;}

At this point, anything can happen. They've just broken a pattern they've kept up since the beginning. There's no way to tell.

Probably. Iris and the green-haired guy likely won't stay past 200 episodes.

They will probably leave Iris and Dento because they have Gen V pokemon and they will need character(s) with the new pokemon in order to advertise new games.

yeah, but if they were to stay, they wouldn't only have isshu pokémon on their teams. the writers would make them capture new pokémon so that they'd advertise the new games. they don't need new characters just to advertise a new set of games. as we're seeing right now, iris and dento don't seem to be in-game characters, so whether the future heroes are new or not doesn't really matter. misty wasn't a johto character, yet they kept her. how did she advertise? by having some johto pokémon on her party. they could do the same thing all over again...

Misty had what...two new Johto Pokemon? Corsola and Politoed, and Politoed didn't even come till the last 15 or so Johto episodes.

It will chang every generation. Brock will come back.

The thing is though Misty did not have a mascot that was tied to a single generation and neither did Brock until DP. She and Brock were likely kept because they were also tied in with Gold and Silver because Kanto was present and generation specific marketing might not of been as intense as it was back then. And Iris has a Gen V mascot and Dento might too which would make it harder for them to advertise a future generation.

the writers were still experimenting at that time. they changed since. when they wrote the hoenn, kanto battle frontier, and sinnoh sagas, we figured they learned from their mistakes. so what happened in johto will never happen again. :p

You are right with Brock at least. Whatever generation he was in reflected the pokes of that generation, with only one old one:

AG: Mudkip and Lotad were his mains, with a leftover Foretress.

DP: Croagunk and Happiny were mains, and Sudowoodo actually advertised HGSS.

Makes you wonder why Brock even kept Foretress for AG, it did absolutely nothing and I don't recall Brock ever using Foretress beyond like 2 episodes.

what about ash? he traveled to the orange islands, johto, hoenn, and sinnoh with his same old pikachu (though pikachu is the pokémon mascot). jessie and james still had their main pokémon in johto too: arbok and weezing. that didn't stop them from traveling to a new region. the only johto pokémon team rocket's ever had is wobbuffet. of course, it would have been to nice to see more johto pokémon on jessie and james' teams, but since wobbuffet had this *mega* personality, team rocket had no problem advertising johto. this could very well happen again with iris or dento. either one of them could capture some outstanding new pokémon.

She and Brock were likely kept because they were also tied in with Gold and Silver because Kanto was present and generation specific marketing might not of been as intense as it was back then.

or they stayed for the johto saga because the writers thought they were popular characters. they thought that having them stay around for another while would satisfy the viewers. what they basically did is bring ALL the elements from the original saga (the kanto saga) into the johto saga. they thought things would stay cool and new, but in the end... that didn't happen.

And Iris has a Gen V mascot and Dento might too which would make it harder for them to advertise a future generation.

but so does ash, once again. pikachu doesn't stop his other new pokémon from advertising the new games.

they're seriously getting rid of brock?

That's the general conciousness/wish fufillment based on the preview given.

...There is still the possiblity that he might return, but since Dento seems to be filling Brock's role, it's now unlikely. Right now things are up in the air.

As for replacing characters every saga... Since Iris and Dento don't seem to be based on game characters, they aren't bound to a certain set of games unlike the main characters who are. So it is likely that they might stay after BW is over... Provided that they become popular with the fans.

They still will be stale and tired after 200 eps though, its best not to keep them.
