For the past couple of weeks, whenever I boot up my computer, I get this pop-up when the desktop loads.

What does this mean?

Somewhat related, I haven't been able to use Windows Media Player or play any .wmvs for several months, and this seems to have something to do with the same file. I have copied it from other computers and put it in the correct folder, but it always disappears or does nothing to help the problem.

Edit: Not two options, only one really... a fresh install, meaning you would have to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

I don't want to risk sounding redundant, though any problem I have ever had with my computer regarding crashes, viruses, etc. have always been fixed once I format the hard drive. If you have a lot of important files, it's probably best to get some rewritable CD's and go from there.

I don't think I'll go that far, seeing as the machine is getting up there in age (3-4 years); I'll most likely get a laptop summer-fall of next year to replace it.

The WMP thing is the most annoying, but I can deal with it.

If there is an easier fix than starting over, please let me know.

Well, there is another fix I can think of, but it puts you at risk of losing data. For instance, a repair installation of XP would probably break some software installations but I've never actually performed one on a computer I cared anything about.

You say you've tried replacing the file in question, so that doesn't help. And since it's fairly old, I can't recommend System Restore.

If you really need to be able to play Windows Media files, I don't know if VLC Media Player or something might be able to help you out in that department. Try that, and if it doesn't work, I think there are other alternatives.

The problem with WMP began when I tried to install the latest version (11, I believe). Near the end of the installation it said an error had occurred, the installation stopped itself. However, I repeatedly re-downloaded and tried to install the program, but it always ended up terminating the same way. My old, previously-installed version of WMP hasn't worked since then.

Something else which seems to be at the root of the problem is Windows Update. One update I installed quite some time ago caused more problems with my computer and the WTSAPI file; startup took so long I had to use System Restore, but the next Windows Update mucked things up again. I tried installing one update at a time to isolate the problem, but I could never find it.

hm.. could it be that you aren't the admin of thst comp cause if you aren't that might happen
