Woman got canned because of a Bumber Sticker

*IF* (big if) this is what really happened, then it's an open and shut case.

What the hell kind of a site is that? It's like a tabloid. And...tabloids make my insides bleed.

I wish it was a tabloid. Though, this story has been silenced in most of the mainstream media but has become a hot topic on liberal and blogging sites. And I actually listened to this woman describe how it happened. Though, what the site doesn't tell you is that the employer tried to convince her it was a joke (a very sick joke) but she didn't buy it. Now she job hunting where people will at least respect her wish to express her support for a radio station.

It's big enough news that you really think it's being "silenced"?

People get fired for idiotic and illegal reasons all the time.

Well, the key word is Air America. The right doesn't want to believe Air America is anything more than an underground movement that will soon pass over (it's been "passing over" for more than two years but they can dream). The only time they want people to know about Air America is when they say Air America is dying (despite Air America is kicking Fox Radio's Ass where it can be heard in 89 cities across America). So they don't want something like this to become a national story it would likely become (because people like hearing about this kind of thing for some reason) because it would be free publicity to Air America which would bring more listeners to it. I've listened to Fox Radio and they hate Air America with a passion and considering this happened in a relatively conservitive area, the conservitive boss firing someone because they listen to progressive radio would look bad. So they pass it off as a minor incident. It is minor at face value but how would you like if you were fired for a bumped sticker on your car?

I dunno, last I heard, Air America was having to pay its affiliates to air the programming--not exactly a sign of stations scrambling to pick it up. More like those all-infomercial TV stations you see, but with an agenda.

That said, I have no Air America station near me and don't care enough to stream it. YMMV.

Air America doesn't own stations, they lease air time on radio stations. That's why they pay their affiliates.

And all this time I thought "Air America" was a movie starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. But I don't see how it's an open and shut case. You can't legally fire someone for having different political leanings from you. How does the fact that she's a liberal--or at least listens to liberal politicians--affect her ability to do her job?

Precisely. The ratings and demos are so bad that they don't get enough advertising dollars to be paid to air their show.

Let me try to explain this.

The Advertizers (and there are plenty of them) pay Air America to produce their broadcasts. Then Air America pays the stations to use their stations. So it's not that they are awful, it's just they don't own any radio stations.

Um, no. Most stations PAY for the rights to air programming. For example, Harpo or Kingworld or whoever, gets paid by stations to air Oprah and Dr. Phil on TV. Syndicated radio broadcasts are usually no different--a station pays for a program in the hopes of higher ratings and more ad sales in that time period. I can assure you that most, if not all of the right-wing talk shows operate in this manner.

On the contrary, infomercials pay to be aired on TV stations, since the money coming in from the company is probably better than the money that could be made trying to sell ads during that time (or they're lazy and want the easy money). Air America is operating in this manner.

I'm a Democrat as you appear to be, but I can tell and will admit that Air America is not doing well.

Well they do well in some markets and poorly in others. Just like Fox. Though, Fox has the benefit of name, money, and saturation. Give it time, Air America is slowly catching on and will find its place.
