I couldn't find a thread for this so I just made it myself. What do you think are the worst or best names that the translators have come up with? I vote for Lickylicky as the worst pokemon, sprite, and especially name ever created.

Shinx. Am I the only one that thinks this is a mispronounciation away from sounding like an ethnic slur? Or am I overreacting?

Now that you mention it ...

As for names, I would probably put Regigigas. I can't even pronounce it right.

Blacky. What the hell, Game Freak?
It should have been AfroAmericany.

No, I don't know, a lot of the Japanese names are lame to Americans because we are too use to English, I mean Spear, Lizard, Cocoon, Coil? Yeah... (lol)

But I really don't get "Shinx", The rest of it's evolutions just seem to be translations, so why "Shinx"? (Okay "Luxray"!= "Rentorer", but whatever, in that case, the english name still sounds cool, lol)

I also don't like Piplup very much, it just sounds weird, even though it sounds like the electronic (game) call for it.

Worst:
Seel- no explanation needed

Best:
Any of the Japanese names that are based off of real people
Purin- easy for me to mimick

Worst:
Dunsparce-just because of the way it sounds-_-
Snubull-i dont know, but it sounds sexual to me.....
Hairyama-cant stop calling it hairymama.
Gible-reminds me of kibble for a dog.

Best:
Masquerain-sounds cool to me.
Froslass-love the pokemon and the name:3
Weepinbell-i just like how it flows........

I have no clue how people cannot pronounce a straightforward name like Abomasnow. There's no foreign words or tricky syllables there. All the letters sound like what you would expect them to sound.

I would think slowpoke is not a very good name, i mean its a phrase. And also when ever i hear slowbro, i always think of like a surfer or something. lol

Blacky. What the hell, Game Freak?

I guess it would make sense if you were japanese and didn't know english all that much.

Phrases and words in languages that you don't speak yourself usually come off as "cool". Hence the whole Weeaboo movement.

As for names well... I can't think of any I dislike, mostly because I've gotten used to them already.

Charizard. I freakin hate that name for a pokemon. and Feraligatr. They couldnt freakin finish the name?

I hate how Feraligatr isnt spelt Feraligator.

And I also hate Typhlosion, Meganium, Arceus (for the longest time I thought it was Acreus) and most of the other gen IV names.

I liked Mothim. Shame the Bulbapedia page doesn't notice the resemblance to Mothra in spite of an all-male Pokemon related to something being commonly protrayed as a female kaiju and only male in the Rebirth of Mothra series.

But that's the only one I really like of Gen IV. The one that I hated the most was....Empoleon. Honestly, I can see the correlation to Emperuto/Emperor and emperor penguins, but relating a penguin to Napoleon the Emperor of France is just stupid.
