I think we've never had any thread about that before.

What are the WORST character names ever? I'm talking mainly about English names, as they are often wrong, but Japanese names are welcome here.

Here is my list of the worst English names:

Tabitha - For obvious reasons. The name is okay but the fact that it has been given to a MALE Magma Executive, is not.

All Colosseum & XD Names - All retarded in both English and Japanese (and other languages too). I believe that NoA employees were under the influence of various drugs when thinking up those names.

Mysterial - Don't know... But I hate that name, for some reason. His Japanese name (Mysterio) at least sounded masculine, Mysterial sounds like... I don't know what. There are so many better names.

Kellyn - No explaining needed here. One of the most WTF-ery names ever. It's especially bothering as it belongs to a MAIN character.

Rhythmi - Poor girl. The namingperson was ruthless here. No one deserves to be named so. Really!

Ice - Before I discovered this name, I THOUGHT that the new namer is a retard. When I discovered this name, I KNEW that the new namer is a retard. I know that's also his Japanese name. But, you know, Japanese love everything which is in English and tend to make names out of that. But naming a character so in ENGLISH VERSION? Name Ice for an icy guy is the most retarded thing I saw in awhile.

Sird, Orm & Carr - I know that those are names given by Chuang Yi, not NoA or PUSA but... you must admit that CY reached the peak of uglyness with those names. Couldn't they make up something else?

Amber (the Aqua Executive) - Blatant feminine name for a male character. Nuff said. Chuang Yi screws again.

A.J. - I hate such names! HATE THEM! Couldn't they think up something better? They could even keep Akira! And I long thought that the guy's dub name is actually Eiji. Would be better, wouldn't it?

Gullzer - Cause WTF is that? Well, the guy was pretty much as retarded as his name but still...

Quincy Quackenpocker - Do I have to explain?

Willhelmina (?) - 'Cause no one knows how to spell it

Sonrisa - It's not even a real name. Did they have to choose the name just because it sounds blatantly similar to "sunrise"?

Lulu - Lululululululululu WTF?!

Vidso (?) - Same reason as Willwhatever. Because NO ONE knows how to spell it. If you have DVD with the episode "The Screen Actor's Guilt", please check the subtitles to see how the name is spelt.

Jenaro - Because of spelling. It should be spelt Gennaro.

Blurt, Braggo & Chico - Retarded names for retarded characters

Kai, Kail & Kim - Same as above. And also because finding out those guy's spellings took the fandom too much trouble. Not to mention that "Kim" is a feminine name after all!

Kimmy - Feminine name for a male character, again. And please don't say that in {some language} the name "Kim" is masculine, it's a feminine name to me and to many other people.

McCauley - It's not a given name!

Marble - Again, random English word chosen as a name. PUSA should not keep it.

Spring - Direct translation. It's not a name, PUSA!

Cocoa - I like cocoa (the drink) but naming the child after it is pretty much the most retarded thing a parent can do.

Kid Summers - Just like Marble. "Kid" is not a name, it's just a random word chosen by the Japanese producers. Not to mention it's too retarded.

Banks - Ekhm... same as above.

Ship - Same as above. Again.

Discuss! Who do you think are the worst Character names in Pokemon?

EDIT: Now I have a dilemma whether it belongs here or to Pokemon General. If the latter one is more relevant, then please move.

Dude, have you even seen the ending credits to Shadows of Almia? Nob Ogasawara translated those games, and what's more, he was never heavily involved with the naming of characters to begin with. Please get your facts straight. Also, be careful with your usage of the word "retard" many people find it to be offensive.

What? NOB OGASAWARA translated SoA?

Didn't he get fired?

Well, you got me here. Ogasawara is sure an awesome translator. But he prove that he has no idea about naming in SoA. Well.

I liked Quackenpoker, his name included. He even looks like a Quackenpoker, whatever that would be.

It just rolls off the tongue.

Quackenpoker.

Don't mess with the Quackenpoker.

Wilhemina (or however you spell it)
All the names from spinoff type games (like ranger and XD)
Nicky (its a girls name...)

I love how half of Maxim's list has either cool names or names that he dislikes because he "can't spell them." How I love your excuses, Maxim. =)

Anyway, most XD names are under the WTF list.

The only names from SoA that bothered me where Rhythmi and Crawford. Ice could have had a more creative name, but eh. At least he doesn't have a hippy name or one that's after a town in Texas. I thought the whole thing with Lamont's last name was hailarious.

Other then that: Flannery, Hayley, Jimmy, Mysterial, Tracey (Girl's name, ick!), Brock and Misty all suck royally.

What's so cool about Rhythmi, Ice, A.J., Gullzer, Sonrisa, Marble or Ship?

Of course, there are some cool names in Pokemon. PUSA sometimes gives characters really good, creative names (e.g. Evian, Oralee, Forsythia, Karsten and Rosebay). Some 4Kids's names were also very good (Vladimir, Egan and others). NoA also had some cool ones. Cyrus is awesome. And even the guy who named SoA characters amazed me with Sven. So, it's not like there are no good names in Pokemon.

Of course, I could also make a "Coolest Character Names" thread but come on, it's CHRISTMAS Time! Mistletoe and Whine!

EDIT: I added one very important name to the first post. How could I forget him?!

Anyway, most XD names are under the WTF list.

To be honest, the GCN game's characters all have extremely odd names to give it a feel that the entire region and everyone who's native to it is very far away and very disconnected from the rest of the world where the games take place.

It could even be argued that these games talk place on a different continuity, just like the Mystery Dungeon games. In a matter of speaking.

Other then that: Flannery, Hayley, Jimmy, Mysterial, Tracey (Girl's name, ick!), Brock and Misty all suck royally.

What's wrong with Flannery?

Crawford and Barlow, I'm just going with the assumption that they are surnames and people just refer to them as such.

Rhythmi, I've made my peace with it by not pronouncing it as ri-thu-mee but as rith-mee. Why not? its not like there's a "u" in there.

Princepal Lamont's last name sucks.

Is Rosebay that Bugsy looking girl?

Is Rosebay that Bugsy looking girl?

She was in the episode where Starly evolved into Staravia.

Anyway, I don't feel the need to complain about minor characters having sucky names (Although I don't really find any of the names that horrible as Maxim makes it out to be). They are minor characters and don't really have a big enough role to really be a bother.

Nihon-go wa betteru desu ne?

All Colosseum & XD Names - All retarded in both English and Japanese (and other languages too). I believe that NoA employees were under the influence of various drugs when thinking up those names.
Wait what.

If the names are "retarded" in English and Japanese, how is it NoA's fault for using names with a similar feel to the Japanese verion? Not that it's justification for poor names in the Japanese version but yeah...

Mysterial - Don't know... But I hate that name, for some reason. His Japanese name (Mysterio) at least sounded masculine, Mysterial sounds like... I don't know what. There are so many better names.
I don't see or hear much of a difference.

Kellyn - No explaining needed here. One of the most WTF-ery names ever. It's especially bothering as it belongs to a MAIN character.
Only in the spelling.

Rhythmi - Poor girl. The namingperson was ruthless here. No one deserves to be named so. Really!
Sounds fine to me.

Ice - Before I discovered this name, I THOUGHT that the new namer is a retard. When I discovered this name, I KNEW that the new namer is a retard. I know that's also his Japanese name. Could be a nickname. Same for a lot of these ones which are generic nouns which are used as names.

A.J. - I hate such names! HATE THEM! Couldn't they think up something better? They could even keep Akira! And I long thought that the guy's dub name is actually Eiji. Would be better, wouldn't it?
Not really. >>;

Quincy Quackenpocker - Do I have to explain?
Yes. Yes you do.

Willhelmina (?) - 'Cause no one knows how to spell it
Wilhemina. Do I get a cookie?

Sonrisa - It's not even a real name. Did they have to choose the name just because it sounds blatantly similar to "sunrise"?

Lulu - Lululululululululu WTF?!
What's wrong with Lulu?

Jenaro - Because of spelling. It should be spelt Gennaro.
If this was an anime character, why does the spelling matter?

Kai, Kail & Kim - Same as above. And also because finding out those guy's spellings took the fandom too much trouble. Not to mention that "Kim" is a feminine name after all!

Kimmy - Feminine name for a male character, again. And please don't say that in {some language} the name "Kim" is masculine, it's a feminine name to me and to many other people.
In which case, stop being so ignorant.

McCauley - It's not a given name!
So? Lots of people are better known by their last name.

Banks - Ekhm... same as above.
Banks, although uncommon, is a perfectly viable name. Not that I'd use it.

Ship - Same as above. Again.
Wasn't there a bit of controversy about whether it was "Ship" or "Shep"?

No offence, but I love how this seems like a rant against the English-language versions of the various Pokémon media.

Okay, on-topic time. I personally don't dislike any of the names in the series in particular. Gardenia was one which bugged me for a while once I learned it was pronounced "gar-dee-nee-ah" instead of "gar-den-nee-ah". Nothing I'd consider as the "worst" though.

Except one.

Handsome. I know I'm probably going to get lynched for this but as a name, nickname or codename, Handsome plain sucks. It seems a bit too self-explanitory, gratuitous English aside. But then, that's probably why it was chosen - to be self-explanitory. Still...
