Would it be bad if they made a prequel?

A prequel in Sinnoh or Kanto. I know they will never make a prequel but what are your thoughts if they did make a prequel. If they did, they would have to do a lot of research so they do not disturb the continuity.

What continuity?

From GS onward, the games are pretty much self-contained stories.

Well, you can look at Johto as Kanto's sequel, but you can also look at Kanto as Johto's prequel so there's that...

No, a prequel is something that comes before a previousgame in terms of continuity. Pokemon R/B/Y came before G/S/C, so it's not a prequel. G/S/C can be seen as a sequel to R/B/Y, though.

yea, but a prequel would be cool but it would be too hard to make. Ain't G/S/C like the only sequel they have made.

Ah, but FrLg came AFTER GSC, thus making FrLg a prequel to GSC, while GSC is the sequel to RBY, which is the original. Of course, HGSS is a sequel to FrLg, which is a prequel to GSC, which is a sequel to RBY, which was the first in the series.

Confusing, huh?

FrLg is a remake of RBY. I'm pretty sure a prequel has to have a completely different story.

Wikipedia's article was TL;DR but if anyone wants to contradict me, feel free.

so confusing. Technically FRLG is a prequel. so i agree with you on that.

A prequel? Like, before Pokemon battling became popular? Or,far in the past, when battling was just becoming a sport? When the Pokemon League was starting?
Or,just a regular prequel to Red/Green/Firered/Leafgreen,staring some random kid going on an adventure?

No, it's not, not even technically. It's 100%, fully a remake which isn't a prequel. What you want is a visit to an already visited continent, but with a different storyline, like having your character play alongside a younger, pre-Team Rocket Giovanni or a younger Professor Oak, or even playing as those guys.

I think that would be pretty cool, especially if it could expand on Giovanni's story, how he became leader of Team Rocket and esteemed enough in the Pokemon world to run his own gym alongside that without suspicion from the Pokemon League or the police.

That sounds like it would make a decent action adventure game, but it doesn't seem like it would fit the Pokemon RPG game type.

Like I said, you can play alongside Giovanni, so he would act like a rival of sorts to your character. Whether that means your character is morally on the good or bad side, who knows so it could still work as a regular pokemon game in that function. Either way, that's the only way I can see an actual Pokemon prequel working if we're talking story.

In this respect, it would be good. As long as they don't take away any of the advances made in the generations (Day/night, global trade, weather, double battle, etc...) then it would be fine.

Well since RSE is at the same time as RBYFRLG and DPPt is the same time as GSCHGSS, a prequel to the RBY era would be okay... I guess... though the big question would be how would they make it so that it didn't screw over continuity.

that's i was saying, they would have to do research, it would be cool if they did a prequel to RBY. But could they mention any Pokémon from Generation 2 onwards? That would be a problem.

I'm confused as to how they would make a Pokémon RPG Prequel. Just drop all the pokémon and start afresh or something like that?

So basically, we're returning to the days where you couldn't put any Gen II+ pokémon into the game plus it sounds like Gen I for a third time, count me out.

Well, not necessarily. Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokemon can all exist within the continuity of this game. Look at FireRed and LeafGreen. Sure, at first you can only get the first 150 Pokemon, but once you're done with the storyline, you can viably have all 386 of them.

The thing is that the new Pokemon in each Generation are just a hook to keep people interested, it affects the in-game story in no drastic way, shape or form.

If they wanted to do a prequel, it would basically be alot like Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald (to this day people are arguing wether it came before or after GSC chronologically, even though it's pretty obvious that it's contemporary to FrLg) in that it could seem as it's own standalone game

You'd be a trainer, possibly from Pallet Town or Viridian City, Giovanni could be your Rival and Prof. Oak could be starting to make a name for himself as a Pokemon Professor (I guess that when Giovanni was ten, Oak was in his late twenties/early thirties or something, right?)

You could travel Kanto, get all the Gym Badges, witness Giovanni's decent to evil, and then, just to make it interesting, you could go to a completely new country after the Elite Four (of which Agatha could viably be the Champion come to think of it.)

This new country could be fleshed out completely (as opposed to Kanto in GSC) and have it's own story...hell, this new country could be the REAL focus of the prequel and Kanto could just be an overly extensive prologue *coughKindomHearts2cough*

At the very end of the game, it could be implied that you, the trainer, stayed in this new country and that's why Red/Leaf and Gold/Kris(Soul) never heard about you.

It's not that hard really.
