I recently noticed that Ritchie, who originally had the same eye design as both of them, was retconned into having blue eyes around Chronicles.

Ash and Gary are some of the only main/recurring characters who haven't been given colored eyes, when their other/game counterparts have, or have had their eye colors enhanced (ala Meowth, who has had blue since the beginning but it didn't become all that apparent until Johto).

The games have long forgotten that style and a lot of manga have colored eyes.

Ash has brown eyes, as seen when you see them up-close or in emotional scenes, but they usually look black. I presume the same is for Gary too.

The only reason I can think they haven't been given colored eyes is because they're the mascots of the anime (excluding Pikachu). Or in Gary's case, he's the mascot rival.

But I think they should at least change Gary's color. Not that he appears much, but still.

I agree with you. I wish they would show Ash's brown colored eyes more often. They rarely show Ash's brown eyes in the show, except during close-ups like you said.

But, they do show Ash's brown eyes often during the movies. I love it when we get to see his true eye color. ^^

Anyway, yeah, they mostly keep Ash's eyes black. However, I think that kinda makes sense. I mean, if you're looking from a distance, someone who has dark brown eyes might appear to have black eyes.

I wouldn't really care to be honest unless they were so distracting they took away from the story

Green's aren't distracting. While Ash's, when shown, are usually bright, it's due to the lighting or emotion.

Almost everyone else in the show has colored eyes.

Uh... Satoshi's eyes are brown. When they make a big close-up on him.

That's what I said. But they never show it. You just see that typical 1st gen - early 2nd gen eye look, that most medias don't follow anymore.

It doesn't really matter. I mean, I kinda like them, because then you can distinguish them from the games (well, Ash is already so distinguishable on his own). They are their own characters, after all (similar as Gary may have been to green)

I mean, they just have really dark brown eyes. Think about it, I have dark brown eyes too, and usually, you can't see the color unless you get close, or the sun is shining in them. Same deal for Ash. (But, you've already said that, sorry XD)

It's not a huge deal for me. I sometimes wish that they would reveal Paul's eye color (since most fans cannot accept them as pure black) for consistency in fanart. but that's just my tiff XD

You could say that, however it's just the original eye style. Look at most gen 1 characters and some gen 2 characters. They all don't have brown eyes.

Heck, like I stated, look at Ritchie.

...What's the point? It's in their character designs. It's been like that for 13 years. If it was their hair, then maybe, but... their eyes? Why change them now?

And so I take the "It doesn't matter" replies as "I wouldn't care/mind".

It would be an unnecessary change, especially at this point. So I wouldn't like it at first, but I'd probably get used to it.

I think Ash's eyes will be more brown in future. Just for the better animation, like we've seen Pikachu's are close up. It doesn't really matter anyway. Misty's eyes changed from green to blue all the time.

I'm not sure exactly what episode, but in on of the Kanto Episode we see that Shigeru's eyes are blue in a close up.

Also, as said, Satoshi just has very dark brown eyes.
