That gave you absolutely nothing as a reward beyond different dialogue? Or even that took things from you?

For example... an NPC who has this tragic story. You can give it one of your Pokemon or leave it to die. The only difference is that later everyone will comment on how it died while with a pokemon it talks a little with you, probably of uninteresting things.
The pokemon you have to give him is also an unique one.

Thinking about the nature of the pokemon games, I wonder how many players would care about a random NPC even if it gives nothing back and actually hinders progress?

I think it would be very interesting...I mean, I'd be pretty p*ssed if I did a long, complicated sidequest and was then rewarded with...having a one-of-a-kind Pokemon taken from me. But I, for one, would enjoy sidequests that give nothing more than dialogue - personally, I feel that one of the things that the Pokemon games are lacking in is good, strong character development and a really engrossing story.

The Giovanni quest didn't have a reward, just backstory. I still want to do it because it's freakin Giovanni

This is making me think of Majora's Mask, where most of the sidequests gave yopu masks that were pretty much useless beyond one-time situations. But because of those sidequests, the world was much more fleshed out and even the minor characters got some development.

I wouldn't mind if Pokémon had a few sidequests that didnt' earn you a reward, it would be a great chance to develope the NPCs.

you know, they could have just given out a lv. 1 dragon trio with arceus, but instead the made the sinjo ruins with cynthia and all, and I enjoyed that.

I think it would have made the pokémon you get rarer and more significant if you had to sacrifice something, like the extremespeed dratini.
I'm the kind of guy who always talks to everyone in all of the towns, so yes, I would.
it would actually make the game better if there was some risk or sacrifice.
It wuld also be nice if something actually HAPPENED when you lose instead of you just losing money, maybe a pokémon would be lost and you'd have to find it

I wouldn't mind it if you could get extra experience for your pokémon the sidequest. Eg, battle against an NPC to do with the sidequest (Giovanni, for example).

Even I did lose a rare pokemon, I wouldn't mind as much because I think that there are really too little things to do afterwards (in platinum that is) I mean I know there is the whole battle frontier and the contests and stuff, but that's really all there is. If you get tired of constantly breeding new pokemon with the right natures and training their evs not to mention grinding for BPs or money, then it gets kind of dull, but if it had more than just one sidequest, it'd be awesome.

Your little example is a little extreme and would actually make a really dull side-quest, unless you're a small child. Using death to pull at the heartstrings isn't really a good reason to have a side-quest.

I wouldn't mind side-quests..as long as the story or the reason behind it is good and not something as generic as "OH NOES IT R DEAD, WHAT DO?"

As long as its not completely insane like that chain mail sidequest from the first Paper Mario, I'd support it.

Especially if it means expanding on the backgrounds of NPCs.

Taking without giving goes against pretty much every basic school of thought on gameplay design, so I can't really imagine them doing anything like that without providing some sort of reward somewhere down the line.

However, I could see them adding "Catch this for me" quests. Say they add another power plant in a future game, but someone there needs you to catch a voltorb so they can get it working, which in turn lets you progress in the story. Right now, pretty much all the Pokémon you catch are for yourself—it wouldn't be that outlandish to add some instances where you have to catch them for others as well.

Without sidequests, you're not on an adventure. You're just a roaming band of thugs who bring terror and death to an otherwise innocent and peaceful world. The noble sidequest is what separates us from the monsters.

My attitude towards sidequests has always been that if it makes the lives of the little fictional people living inside the game console better, I'll do it.

However, I could see them adding "Catch this for me" quests.

Personally I'm surprised that Hayley's requests didn't show up ingame in Platinum or HGSS. For instance there'd be an NPC who would give you a week to give him a pokemon of a particular level and nature or that knew one or two specific moves. Maybe they just couldn't figure out any way to reward a player that would be worth the effort.

Rare TMs are probably kept rare for a reason. Evo stones aren't all that hard to pick up anymore either, and tracking down a pokemon for an NPC is probably a lot more effort than doing a few courses in the Pokathelon. If you were only able to complete the quest once per week they might be able to hand out BP considering how valuable those end up being.

Oh god, I'm designing Pokemon quests that function like World of Warcraft Daily Quests. This is the path to madness.

I love sidequests, as long as they serve some purpose. More character development would be a great reward, moreso than "here, take a Potion for running around for twenty minutes, lol!" More TM sidequests would be great too, because as it stands a lot of people just sort of hand them to you randomly. Giving away a Pokemon is fine, as long as you clearly know you're giving it away. Knowing what a n00b I was when I was younger, I probably would have given them one of my prized Pokemon, thinking I'd get it back.

I wouldn't mind a side quest where you only lose something that can easily be bought.
