To me the two are very similar; both were obtained by Ash in their first stage, neither of them had to engage in a battle before they were caught, abusive trainers let them go before they came to Ash, they disobeyed Ash at certain points (Charmander when it evolved but then got over it, Chimchar/Monferno when it used Blaze but Ash eventually got thought, it is unknown how Infernape’s Blaze with be dealt with at this point so we can overlook this for now), and they are in their final evolutionary stages.

One thing that I have noticed about Charizard/Infernape is that they were the only starters of Ash’s that never met their evolutionary families in their respective regions. In Kanto, Bulbasaur met its entire evolution stages in “Bulbasaur’s Mysterious Garden”, and Squirtle “Beach-Blank Out Blastoise!” As for Turwig, “Aiding the Enemy!” it was in the same area as Paul’s Torterra and then it evolved into Grotle in the same episode. Dawn’s Piplup battled Kenny’s Prinplup and an Empoleon in “The Rise of Darkrai.” Charizard only was surrounded with other Charizard in the Charzific Valley.

I hope history will not repeat itself for Ash and his fire-type. Charizard cost Ash a win in the Kanto League because it did not listen to him, and I hope that Infernape’s loss of control with Blaze (whether or not it can control it at that point is unknown) doesn’t cause Ash a loss. For all we know if it can’t control Blaze it may take the battle too far and Ash will forfeit because Infernape will lose complete control and try to attack Paul (like in Chim-Charred!) or do too much damage to Paul’s team (similar to Tyson’s Meowth against Victoria’s Persian, even after it won it still tried to attack it). Though we will have to wait and find out when the league rolls around.

Now if the two were to fight who would win? Based on type Charizard has the advantage being part flying-type (though the same was true against Blaziken but it still lost), based on a new generation of attacks it may have learned Air Slash or some other powerful techniques. Since it knew Overheat it may be possible that it finally learned how to use Blast Burn at this point. It would be an amazing battle; Seismic Toss would make a comeback!

Now let’s get down to business I’m sure many of you think that Infernape would win hands down because of its abnormal Blaze. Even as a Chimchar, its Blaze beat an Urasring in one hit! That battle in Chim-Charred made me think that even at that level of Blaze Charizard would have a tough challenge on its hands, I mean just look at its Full Power Flame Wheel (I really wanted to see Ash command it to use a Full Power Flamethrower). Here’s the thing if it learned how to control its Blaze then it would really be a great battle because Infernape would have full control over its hidden powers (similar to Mystic Gohan in DBZ).

It is unknown how much power Charizard would have if it ever used its Blaze. Since the ability was debuted Charizard was only seen twice in its battle with Articuno and Dusclops (both times it took so much damage I was surprised that it was not activated).

Besides Blaze both Pokemon have their own unique techniques. Infernape has Counter Shield, using Dig to sneak up on its opponent and attacking from behind, and incredible speed. Charizard has; Flaming Seismic Toss, Aerial Submission, Rage which increases its power the more damage it takes now let’s see that move combined with Blaze!(that could be a parallel of Infernape’s Blaze), and flight.

Who do you think earns to right to be Ash’s #1 Fire type and possibly the most powerful Pokemon that he has; Infernape or Charizard?

I’ll put up “undecided” because some of you may not know at this point because Infernape has not displayed its full power yet (you know its Blaze and how much stronger it would be if it finally controlled it).

Charizard would win. He's too beastly and powerful. Plus, he's been training for YEARS. xD

Infernape, Charizard's fueled by plot power half the time so...

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

Seismic Toss definitely =P

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

Charizard has to be in the 80s by now, for christs sake.

In the anime Lizardon is a Dragon type.

In the anime Lizardon is a Dragon type.

No... No... Just no... Charizard is fire/flying who knows some dragon move, but no on the dragon type thing...

The anime doesn't follow the game exactly.

It follows the basics, like types.

Thunder Armor, anyone?

Pokemon (anime) takes a lot of creative liberties compared to the game. Charizard might be officially a Fire/Flying type in the game, but in the anime he is a full-fledged fire Dragon.

Moltres on the other hand, fits the bill.

Where'd you get the notion it's a dragon type in the anime?

That is how he is portrayed in the anime. In the charicific valley Liza is obviously a dragon trainer, based on the japanese name and appearance.

Charizard's appearance is based on a dragon but it is still a fire/flying Pokemon.

As for who would win, Charizard. Guarrenteed. Charizard has been training for years and has the type advantage, Flying > Fighting. Not that type (dis)advantages really matter in the anime, but Charizard is obviously stronger than Infernape.

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

I'd say Charizard. Apart from typing, Charizard has had more training than Infernape did.

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

Who would win??? Duh! Charizard has more experience and a type adavntage. What more does he need?

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

This can't really be a contest, can it?
Charizard FTW. you don't need reasons, he wins by default.

Re: Would you see Ash’s Chimchar as a parallel of his Charizard? Who do you think wou

Charizard would win, he is Ash's strongest pokemon.
