Wow...[pika-chan's gender]

I just watched the episode where Ash gets the thunder badge from Lt. Surge and Meowth definitely called Pikachu a "he". But that was the dub, so I suppose it doesn't really count...

I'm gonna make a fanfic tommorow, had the idea on my head...Maybe I'll addc TR in it too

I must reply to these in particular, in the evidence for Pikachu being female:

Yeah yeah, I am aware that several times Ash might have called Pikachu 'he', and in one new Pokémon kareoke box song "PIKACHU" TOLD FROM ASH'S POINT OF VIEW, one line said 'Pikachu, you are my brother'But think about it : Ash isn't exactly the sharpest pin in the cusion, nein?
Um, no....

That's inaccurate, because Ash has never called Pikachu a "he" in the dub.

Of course, like Kem pointed out, other characters have called Pikachu a male in the dub. But Ash has never done this.

Anyway, in response to the quote up there, also of importance is the fact that that particular song wasn't written by the people who made the script for the dub (so you couldn't even use that as dub cannon). That song was performed by a group called Johto.

Although, despite that quote being mostly wrong, they did however get one thing right. It was the last sentence when they were referring to Ash being dense. ^^;

1 : In the Pokémon game it seems that most Pikachus are female. (In Gold and Silver that is!) -I did research, they are 50/50, like in all gens after it.

2 : While many seemingly male Pikachu sound sort of ...umm...well, you know, Ash's pikachu has a higher pitched, more feminine voice. I mean, a MALE sounding like that?!?! (Passes out) *THUD* O,o;;
*Recovers* 3 : Yeah yeah, I am aware that several times Ash might have called Pikachu 'he', and in one new Pokémon kareoke box song "PIKACHU" TOLD FROM ASH'S POINT OF VIEW, one line said 'Pikachu, you are my brother'But think about it : Ash isn't exactly the sharpest pin in the cusion, nein? *Pika*fan grins evilly in agreement*- I will agree Ash was dense, but how about now? I just don't see any real reason for him not to know the gender of his own pokemon. As for it's voice, I will need to hear this comparison. Puka's voice was rather strange, but I don't think I can lend any gender to it.

4 : Yes, once Pikachu got excited when Brock was talking about girls, but perhaps she was wondering if any boy Pikachus were thinking the same thing! Or perhaps she was thinking the same abot boy Pikachus? We know she added 'Pi ka' And two syllables in pikachu language can say a mouthfull. Perhaps she said (ugh) "And boys!"- This is a guess. There is no proof, and there can never be proof. We shall never know.

5 : A seemingly male Magnemite once fell in love with Pikachu, and even though she was magnetized, I don't think the show would have gay Pokémon-I'm not familiar with this ep, but as this debate proves, assuming genders is dangerous.

6 : She often seems to have romantic interests in male Pokémon- I want examples.

7 : One time, she danced with a seemingly male Raichu, and he even dipped her!! Aww..so kawaii...- It was a show, and
EP090.jpg
Pika is dressed in a tux as well.

8 : Pikachu danced ballet with the Bellosom sisters. - sexism, this means nothing.

9 : Meowth once called pikachu she - I wouldn't know about this, but if there was such proof in the JP raw, I think it would've been pointed out already.

10 : I [kawaii wolf] once took a poll, and everyone's Yellow version Pikachu was female when transferred to G/S. Yellow is based on the show.- This may be a coincidence. I need more info on this. Games ≠anime, and the fact that this is the G/S/C's data makes this more fishy.

11 : On the episode 'The Song of Jigglypuff' Ash told Pikachu that she had a pretty voice - I don't know the details on this one.

12 : Whenever Pikachu laughs she giggles into her hands like a Japanese girl-

Do I need to explain?

Just to be fair, I'll pick on the other side, too.

1 : In the episode 'Princess v Princess' when Brock mentioned 'the tons of beautiful girls' Pikachu seemed happy. This happens in various other episodes too. Now, I know it's different in other anime like Sailor Moon, but so far there doesn't seem to be any really homosexuality in Pokémon, so I'm pretty sure Pikachu isn't a gay female. -Again, we don't know what Pika's comment here was.

2 : In the episode 'Pikachu revolts', when Ash is panicing about Pikachu going missing to Officer Jenny, he refers yo Pikachu as 'him' when he says something like 'Please Officer Jenny, you gotta find him'.- This may have to depend on whether you want to believe the dub or the raw. I don't know what the Japanese said here.

3 : Most Pokémon fans think of Pikachu as a he. I'm pretty sure most of the Pokémon fans over the world that think Pikachu is male are wrong.- Most, but not all, and I think you meant female. Never use opinions as fact.

4: The yellow handbook that you get with the yellow version refers to Pikachu as a 'he'.- I need proof of this. I lost my own handbook. ^_^;;;; But, games ≠anime anyway, despite that this was closely modeled after the anime.

That picture you have as evidence is AWESOME. I don't really understand Brock's face though... It's kind of weird...

/off topic

I always thought Pikachu was a boy. And the "evidence" on that site hasn't changed that. Most of it, as others have said, is kinda sketchy and not really proof of anything. I suppose we'll probably never know, though, since I don't think it's important enough to the plot for the writers to ever include it.

Great evidence, but how abouts Dawns Buneary. It has a crush on Pikachu and I think more than likely, it's a female. I could be totally wrong, but a male sound like that?! Just thought I point that out.

Hints about Pikachu being male are as old as the seventh episode where they made it painfully obvious Pikachu liked Misty's sisters' dance.

The arguements about Pikachu being female are mostly unfounded or based on obscure scenes that are up for speculations or mistakes.

Offically, Pikachu's an it like most of the Pokemon. However, I personally believe (it's) written as a male.

But... Ash is doing the same thing as Pikachu there. Are you saying Ash is also a girl?

Actually, that's what Sceptile726 is saying: Pikachu is doing the same thing as Ash, who is obviously not a girl, so "giggles into her hands like a Japanese girl" point is moot.

In fact, Sceptile726 is pointing out the flaw in each argument; their comments are separated from the originally made points by a dash:

Ah, sorry, I only just realised what 'do I need to explain' meant. I was reading in a hurry. ^_^;

Well...It's too troublesome to put my list of reasons why I think Pika-san is a Pika-girl[...weird pun.]..I'll just write a pika-chan fanfic.

Buneary fancies Pikachu and Buneary's obviously a girl. And obviously they won't have any gay relationships in Pokemon.

I've read once that Ash (at least in the german dub) refers to Pikachu as "she" in EP001,
but I don't think that the german dub is the best source for canon informations.^^
Also I think that if Pikachu would be female his (or her) tail would have been changed to a heart-shaped one then D/P was released.

In an old Pokemon magazine(either the Pojo's one where they had a Rocket's set reviev with Jolteon on the cover or 4th edition of Beckett's Pokemon Collector for October, which I'm pretty sure it is), they had a poll in the mail section where people were saying if they thought Pikachu was a girl or a boy, and over 70% said it was a he. Then again, that's only the general public, not the anime. And yes, there are several instances in which Pikachu is mentioned as a he, I believe.

everyone, disregard ANY instances of "he" or "she" (or whatever other gender-specific 3rd persons) in a foreign dub, because they were never used in the original. While Japan does have gender-specific 3rd-person pronouns ("kare"=he/him, "kanojo"=she/her), from all my years of watching anime, they very rarely come up in comparison to the ambiguous pronouns. In the case of Pikachu (and most other Pokemon), Satoshi will refer to it as "aitsu" (that guy) or "koitsu" (this guy) when not referring to it by name (names being another 3rd person that the Japanese language uses a lot more often than English).

For the record, I myself am convinced that Pikachu is a male. I'm just pointing out that using "'he/she' was used in the dub" is majorly flawed logic.

Hints about Pikachu being male are as old as the seventh episode where they made it painfully obvious Pikachu liked Misty's sisters' dance.

they're also as old as the hints that Pikachu's into beastiality. XD (I couldn't resist)

German also has gendered nouns. I'm not sure what genders the pokemons' names are, but it's possible that "Pikachu" could be a feminine noun. I'd have to see an ep in German though.

Well, with the heart shaped tail, that would be really kind of silly to change what the tail looked like after what, 5 seasons, maybe more?
