writing resources?

I don't mean 'how to write', I mean for basic facts that the character in the story would know but what we as their authors don't.

Is there any sort of general fact database like this? Even on-line searches didn't help what I was looking for earlier.

Maybe its because I'm sleep-deprived in the extreme, but what exacly are you asking? A database of pokemon data that characters should know or something? If that's the case I think its up to you and to how much you want to stck to cannon.

Well, it was a Pokemon fic, but the thing I was looking for had nothing to do with the creatures or any canon, it was a general information thing.

For instance, no site I've ever found has what the various parts of samurai armor are called. I can find Western armor, but...

And last night I was trying to find what the parts of a bullet are called.

I've seen 'writers guides to' various things, but those all seem to have a detective novel slant to them (Writers Guide to Poison, for instance). Would there be any *general* resource?

No, but for samurai armour, try looking on a samurai website, and the same for bullets

I did. All I could find were sites that sold them, nothing that labled the parts.

Tried MS Encarta Encyclopedia yet? Maybe the information would be there. "Anime Invasion" magazine just did an article on Rurouni Kenshin and they had a diagram of a katana sword with all its parts labeled. I'd also suggest the Anime Nation website; you might find a link there.
