Would this be feasable? It wouldn't take much programming on their part, but here's the thing...

You may remember about a year and a half ago when a championship player died at 16. It was said at the time that when the prospective third game would come around, "we" (although it was never said who "we" would be) would try to write to NoA about getting a Machamp trainer (that was his favorite pokémon) renamed Cason.

Do you think it would be too late to do this now? Or would we have a chance? Or even if it's too late for Platinum, do you think they might put it on file for any future games? Because as-is they tend to take the names of random trainers from people around the office.

...also would it even be NoA to write to?

Probably NoA, though you could try a longshot and contact that guy from Something Awful who was on the DP staff too...

Um, he kinda got let go from NoA. He's no longer translating the Pokémon games unfortunately.

Shame really, it was almost the 10 year aniversery of the release of the Red and Blue games in North America.

EDIT: Even if he was still working with NoA, I doubt that PMing him about being put in a Pokémon game would do anything.

A tribute to a player?

Not a bad idea.

But to be honest, there is a bigger thing I would write to them about. Seeing that the new translator has NO IDEA about character naming (see - Kellyn, Barlow, Rythmi and other Ranger 2 characters) I would suggest the names of new characters to them.

Seeing that Ranger 2 adopted many Engrished forms of Japanese names (Barou -> Barlow, Rizumi -> Rythmi), I'm really afraid that the Frontier Brains will also have such names ("Cockran", "Katrea" or even "Negeky" are possibilities). Do you want such names for characters? I do not!

What was the name of the champion player? I heard about it, but none of the specifics.

That would be a cool idea.

Like what department would I write to? Translation? Publicity?

Translation, I think.

Anyway, if you really want to write to them, do it now. It'll be soon too late. Anyway, it'll be useless if you don't tell them which trainer (in particular) do you want to be renamed.

Choose one from the Trainer List. There are like... 6 considerable trainers who have Machamp:

Black Belt Carl
Black Belt Miles
Black Belt Eddie
Black Belt Willie
Black Belt Griffin
Black Belt Jarrett

I know there are more trainers which have Machamp, but those ones have Machamp only in rematches, not from start.

However, I think the trainer who should be renamed as Cason is either Black Belt Miles or Black Belt Jarrett because their only Pokemon is a Machamp, so we get a PURE tribute. Other trainers have also other Pokemon, so the reference wouldn't be as clear.

I vote for Miles because he's met earlier in the game.

So, Black Belt Miles -> Black Belt Cason

Helped?

Aren't there Cooltrainers on Victory Road who have Machamps too?

Hmm. I'd probably have to look more into which one...or maybe leave it to NoA if they'd do it.

Is it just me or you... seem to think that I gave you a fake list or something? I'm trying to help you in preparing the letter to NoA because I like the tribute idea. What does your lack of trust in me result from? From the fact that I don't like one of your best friends (and your messenger, it seems)?

No. I've looked the list thoroughly. No Cooltrainers with Machamps. See it yourself in the Trainers List. Want a Platinum list? It's Here. Search for カイリキー and see there are no Cooltrainers with Machamps in Platinum.

I think that Blackbelt Miles is the best choice.

NoA won't do it. They're too stupid. If you want them to do it right (or rather, to do it at all), you must tell them which exactly one, where he appears etc. Otherwise, they won't ever bother to do it.

Not like I know much about NoA's attitude towards fans but... I know what the general attitude in such companies is. If you just say "Do something...", they'll laugh at you.

Yeah, that's just you. I was thinking because I swear there were some in Victory Road in DP. They must have been removed for Platinum then.

Geez, paranoid much?

...OK, now someone's telling me NoA doesn't even *do* the translations. So who does? Because I remember just a short time ago where they fired a bunch of their translators including the SA guy spoken of on the first page--this is all so confusing, because now I have someone *else* telling me that SA guy has been doing translations since the first games, but I swear that's not true...

What the hell is going on here?

SA guy is Nob Ogasawara, his screenname there is just Douglas Dinsdale. I mean, my name's not TTEchidna, is it? Since he joined SA after Emerald came out and before DP came out I'd say that's why we didn't have memes in there before.

Even if you could get through to an actual member of the development team localising the game, they are unlikely to actually read/bother with your e-mail as that's not what their info stream is for.

You'd be better off getting in touch with their PR people and seeing if they can get in touch with Nintendo and the localisation team. This is definitely much more of a 'press petition' thing than anything else.

Is the contact info I have for NOA's PR company - assuming the information I have is up-to-date and they're still using these guys (they seem to change them every year or so now...).

Alternatively, you can contact PUSA's PR director, Amy Wexler, through PUSA's offices and talk to her about it:
