WTF names in the Pokemon Anime

Being the long running show that it is, the Pokemon Anime has had boatloads of characters to name. To avoid doubling up on character names, the writers have often been... creative in their attempts to diversify the masses of supporting and one-shot characters.

We've had names that are uncommon or antiquated, or the result of hackjob attempts at sounding foreign. The writers also seem to enjoy picking a random object and trying to pass it off as a name. Others are just bizarre beyond belief.

Which names do you think are the weirdest? Does the original Japanese have some equally strange names?

Professor Jacuzzi was a massive WTF for me. As my friend snarked: "Are we going to see a Professor Toilet anytime soon?"

Jump from the Hoenn anime was another, "the hell?" moment for me.

Dento itself is pretty weird too, since he's named after a type of corn...

Cassidy's partner, Biff had a stupid name. Seriously, what kind of name is Botch?

I kinda thought Solidad was pretty weird, until it helped me think up a spanish name for a character in a book I'm writing

In all honesty, I was weirded out as a kid by the name Ash; made me think he was going to turn to ash at the end.

Everyone knows my views on this guy, but I have to say that "Jirarudan" is a super-weird name. So it's based on a French philosopher--that just makes it even weirder! It's like something out of Final Fantasy or something (well...he DOES already have the airship...).

Cleavon Schpielbunk for me.

Fitzwilliam and Marble are also pretty odd. -And Cabernet is an odd one for a kids' show.

Wow, I had no idea about O until now. Bizarre. I think with him and Hunter J it's just an abbreviation nickname in place of their actual name. With N, I believe that's his real name. Also, where is it implied in the games that Ghetsis went through children A-M before settling on N, because that's what it says on the one letter name TV Tropes page for him?

Dub only, but Giovanni's a pretty bizarre name when combined with his heavy British accent.

umm, the english dub named shooti after the power dude named trip(who also had the same hair color and wore an orange jacket)

also the english dub has a couple repeating names(like there's two jimmy's, two marina's etc.), but yes the anime does have weird names. here's a few i find really weird:cilan(and his japanese name), burgh, lenora, urara, kazunari, and sho.

They may seem strange to a native English speaker, but in Japan they're quite normal.

I always thought Butler (from the Jiraachi movie) was a weird one. Professor Sebastian is another weird one because I tend to think of "Sebastian" as a given name instead of a family name.

Well I don't know how normal it is, but Normajean really is a strange name to me... when I first heard her saying it, in "The Brockster is in!" I was like WTF? xD

While a pretty obvious pun, Rés and Taurant from that restaurant episode have rather... unconventional names.

Forsythia. I know it's a flower thing, but it's still a strange name.

Rosebay is also another weird name. No idea where the dub got that from.

He doesn't have a British accent in the dub...he has strong diction, but that's not the same thing.

Also, isn't it spelled "Oh" rather than "O"? I didn't see that episode so I wouldn't know how it was captioned, but Oh is a surname.

Dogasu, I wouldn't doubt if Sebastian WAS his given name, considering that we're talking about an organization where the boss is refered to by his given name (and lest you point out that "Sakaki" is a surname, ALL of the team bosses have been called by their given names. Unless "Ghetsis" is a code name, but I would doubt that it would be his surname either).

And then there was Madame Muchmoney. Okay, the intention behind it is obvious (as opposed to Quackenpoker, which just seems to have been plucked from nowhere), but it still sounds pretty clunky to my ears.
