X-Men Manga Character Designs

Kitty's wearing cat ears... and Beast looks like he's from My Neighbor Totoro...

Interest declining. Nightcrawler looks pretty good, though.

...who the heck is Tamara?

I think the last two are new characters for the Wolverine solo manga. I seem to remember there being mention of new characters in it.

Damn, Nightcrawler's hot.

That said... yeah, wtf?

Beast looks like Sully (from Monsters .inc). wolverine looks too young. dunious. But interested. Better designed than some of the characters from the "New Mangaverse" Marvel did.

What the shit? (see, I'm original)

Seriously, what's up with this recent idiotic trend of producing "American manga"? American comic book companies who think the only genre of comics out there is "super hero" notice their sales are falling, and they are unable to attract a female audience notice. They then notice that translated manga is selling - so instead of looking at what might attract people to these comics rather than the stuff they produce (here's a hint, guys: It's not "all super heroes, all the time"), they simply say "that stuff sells: Let's copy it and call it manga, and our stuff will sell too!". Ridiculous.

Okay, I like Kitty's look, along with Nightcrawler's and Wolverine's but Beast looks like a freaking Totoro. Not really sure if I like that design at all. >.<

Still might pick up the series, though.

In all fairness, it's being drawn by an Indonesian, and written by a...non-American (I want to say Frenchman...but it's been a while since I heard anything on this...so it might just BE an American). And it's being put out by Del Rey. And there IS a history of an X-Men manga (at least one...though the one I'm thinking of was just an adaption of the 90s cartoon series, and it WAS brought to America in the late 90s by Marvel).

Though...I more or less agree with your general statement.

Yeah, there's been several licensed manga series based on Marvel licenses - the difference is that these were written by Japanese for the Japanese market to make the characters, stories and concepts of the original American comics more appealing to the audience over there. Some of these were translated into English and released by Marvel in the US. This, however, is just an attempt at writing and drawing in the "manga style" in order to cash in on the manga-buying Americans out there. And that's stupid.

Manga doesn't sell because it's "manga", it sells because it's not just super hero comics, and thus might appeal to people who *gasp* don't like super hero comics, or want some variety in what they read. THAT's what Marvel needs to take notice of, rather than just looking at some generic manga and saying "hey, we can draw and write like this too!"

Hey now. Not all American manga is crap.

I mean, look at Bizenghast, Dramacon, Peach Fuzz, and Van Von Hunter. All four happen to get decent reviews each volume, and are for the most part original and well-written...
and also happen to be published by Tokyopop and geared towards a female audience. Which may be the point you're trying to make. Still, don't paint all manga of American origin with the same brush.

Man, I saw the most shitastic weaboo trash the other day in the bookstore, something about a tall girl travelling in Japan...

...Anyway, it made me as mad as the license plate I saw today that said "Baka". I wanted to run that person off the road!

...what does that have to do with ANYTHING?

And American manga isn't necessarily made for weaboos. Yes, TP probably has gone a long way in encouraging weaboo culture, but their American titles are excellent. It's not OMG JAPAN IS GOD AND IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE YOU'RE RACIST. I mean, PROFESSIONALS do them.

It was an American made manga. And it was everything you should NOT do in an American Manga.

These aren't so bad, they don't seem that inspired to me... but significantly better than they could have been designed. This definitely won't win any awards, but I'm curious enough to check them out.

As for American "Manga-Styled" comics, I think that they are getting better, and the idea for them is great, but I haven't found one that I truly like yet. I think once the producers get over the "Manga" selling point thing to try to push it as popular we may see better comics. It's just strange to me that you can see Amazing "Manga" Styled Art on Deviant Art all the time (fanart and all), but bring it to the comic scene and we get a quality that falls greatly. (I'm talking about Art and Story Pacing/ Panel Layout)
