Was hoping someone could help me out with this. It started about a week ago. I'm not getting a "Can't Read Disc" error or anything. It's more like the thing doesn't know that there's a disc in the tray. When I get to my Dashboard, the thing that tells you what's in the tray only says "Open Tray" as if it were empty, even though it isn't. When I re-open the tray and close it again, it says "Reading" for a few seconds, and then "Open Tray" again. It does this even if I switch discs.

It doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it'll work fine for a few hours, and then it won't. Yesterday, I took it into the GameStop where I bought it. I figured if they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, at the very least they could give me a new one, since I still had a valid product replacement plan under them. But when I took the thing in, and they tried it out in the store, it was working fine, so there really wasn't anything they could do about it. The guy tried ab'out 10 CDs on it, and they all worked fine. He said they couldn't replace it under my PRP unless they could verify in-store that it wasn't working.

He said that it could possible be dust, so he sprayed it with an AirDuster a couple of times, but I doubt that was it. I've only had this current 360 since early November. My first one RRoD'd on me, but I had had that one since February, and kept it in the same place I keep the current one, and it never had any trouble reading discs until it died. Plus, I had AirDusted the thing myself around mid-December.

He said if it wasn't dust, it could be that the lens had shifted or something due to movement, but I don't see how that could be possible. The thing really hasn't moved more than a few feet since I got it, and not at all within the last month.

When I brought it home from GS, it worked fine for the rest of the day, and it was working this morning as well. But when I tried playing a DVD a little while ago, it did it again.

I really only play thing thing every couple of days, and usually only for a few hours, so it's not like the thing has been overworked or anything. It's been horizontal ever since I got it, because I heard that that was better for the system, and it's been AirDusted twice since I got it. I don't know if this is relevant to the situation or not, but I live in Florida, and we've had some seriously cold (for us) weather the last few weeks. Is there any chance that the difference in temperature is affecting my system?

I really don't want to have to call Microsoft, since I know they'll probably just tell me to send the damn thing in again. Anyone got any ideas what's wrong with my baby?

First of all, do you hear tapping noises after the disk is put in? If yes, then it is an aging DVD according to what I was told by many people. It has happened to me alot of times, but just like you, it works fine afterwards then it happens and repeats.

I haven't really noticed any clicks, no. But it isn't an issue with the discs themselves, as it affects all of my discs equally, even my copy of Bayonetta, which is less than a week old.

yea, I usually hear clicks and it happens on all disks, even DVDs & CDs.

How do you have it resting on wherever you have it?
Thing has been horizontal since I took it out of the box.

Open Tray is a common issue and it means the drive is failing.
Heres a quick fix, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwhm1djj9n0
Which drive? The disk drive? Or the hard drive? If it's the disk drive, it's fine, 'cause I can just swap the system. If it's the hard drive, I can still swap, but I don't wanna lose all my stuff. ;_;

The DVD Drive.

Just to update, the DVD drive finally died on me, so I was able to finally trade the thing in under GameStop's PRP. Unfortunately though, it was a 60GB model, so I had to upgrade to the Elite. When you subtract the $250 I got in store credit for my old system, and add in the $40 it cost to get a PRP for the new system, I ended up getting my Elite for only $90, which I guess isn't so bad. Plus, when you get an Elite, GS gives you a free $50 Gift Card, so now my Soul Silver preorder is pretty much covered.
