I am currently in the precess of getting ready to upgrade to XP, from ME (yes, I'm a late bloomer, I know :p).

The question is... will I have any risk in losing everything or totally fucking it up with nothing working?

Ok, here's the deal. With Microsoft, users never catch a break. When I upgraded,
I had to backup all my files and transfer them over later. XP always
installs on a clean slate. In the process, it looks to format first then install.

If you have to save everything, I suggest going for a cheap hard drive and then go for an external casing.

I was able to do my 250GB harddrive+case for roughly $120 from newegg.

How much do you need to back up? If it's relatively less, then go ahead and just start XP up on the new
hard drive and transfer everything else via slave.
