just wanted to make a thread to spread some love about horizons' various characters :enzap: please keep this thread clean of character hate! (lighthearted/neutral discussion is ok!)

what's your favorite character from pokemon horizons and why? doesn't matter if they're a main character or a side character or a character that only showed up for one episode. i'd love to hear it all!

i'll start! it is a really, really difficult choice between liko and dot for me, but despite all my online profiles being covered in liko i think i'll say dot here. not only do i think she's one of the best written characters in horizons overall and not only do i really like her character design (both pre and post timeskip) but i really appreciate her from a representation perspective. i had a troubled childhood with phases of being a genuine shut-in the same way that dot was holed up at home on her computer and wasn't attending school or going outside, and HZ041 (the episode with dot battling her mom and convincing her to stay on the ship) is still one of my favorite episodes in the entire show because i've never watched something with such an accurate and compassionate take on a shut-in character, especially one that is a child and especially one that is a girl. i actually wrote an entire informal essay at the time that episode came out because i was so emotional about it lol. and that feeling transfers to pretty much every dot-centric episode or plot point, particularly during her growing as a person in the terastal debut arc; watching her become more confident and develop genuine friendships was my favorite part of horizons thus far. she really just hits so close to home.

Friede! :enzap:

I think I have a thing for characters with old-fashioned pilot characteristics, like his coat and goggles. I love his attitude and how he fills the leadership role of the crew (or used to). Having a Charizard and a Pikachu are kinda boring picks for team members in my opinion, but I've obviously grown to love Cap over the series. Thankfully he has Starmie now! I think that's a cool addition to his team since I've always loved Starmie too. His "bit" of leaving out crucial information is also funny to me. I can understand how others see it as annoying, but I think it's silly.

Other than Friede I also really like Niko, Rob and Dash. They're interesting doppelganger characters to me and I always like spotting them in the background. I'm glad they weren't just thrown away after their first episode, and I'm surprised that Dash even got somewhat of a story line!

Do I even need to say it

Why? It's like they designed him specifically for me lol, they know their secondary targets well

I like everyone BTW but my second thought was Diana, she is badass

my favorite character is liko. i love how sweet and kind she is and i've loved seeing her learn to value herself more than she used to. seeing her develop into a strong and compassionate leader has been so great to me. i adore her. it probably doesn't hurt that sprigatito is one of my favorite pokemon ever haha. i also really enjoy dot. for normal reasons (kicks my 100,000+ words of likodot fan fiction under the bed)

i am only about 30 episodes into Horizons i desperately need to pick it back up (Lisia if you see this remind me to watch it with you again) but i really like Lucius so far! I don't know much about him but his design is really pretty and i find the bits and pieces i have seen really interesting and wanting to learn more. I accidentally got really invested in Liko's quest to learn more about him because i think he's pretty and cool i cannot lie.

honestly when friede was first introduced at the start of the series i was worried that his team was going to be really boring on account of "they have to put pikachu and charizard in again and no other reason" but they have successfully characterized cap in particular so much and made him so unique, my worries have been quelled and i love him lol

Do I even need to say it
gee i wonder what character NumberOneSpinelApologist on Bulbagarden Dot Net could like... i have no idea.... (silly sarcasm)

scrambling under the bed to take it back out

i would feast on you and lisia's opinions on horizons as you watch it. Please pester me with your horizons opinions if you ever want to LOL. anyway lucius IS pretty. horizons in general feels so obsessed with pretty men lol. there are more to come

Roy! :enzap:

I know I make it obvious, but I don't think I've ever dove into why on here!

Since most media I like is very simple, I've hardly seen many extroverted characters beyond the hyperactive 'stereotype' (and I don't even dislike that trope) and I definitely didn't expect Anipoke to deliver on that front. But it certainly did. It feels like someone just looked at half my personality traits and just said 'yeah we're gonna add this' and it's comedic how much I relate to him. It feels really easy (to me at least) to feel like I'm reading a little too much into a character, but with Roy (and most HZ characters in general) it doesn't feel like I'm doing that at all.

As second is either Dot or Amethio. Probably Dot, if only because (Episode 90+ spoilers) Amethio's screentime goes way down. I actually like Dot for lots of the same reasons as Roy, despite them being nearly complete opposites. I didn't feel liked we'd get such a deeply written introvert from Anipoke, and here we are. As a ambivert that type of stuff means a lot to me.

To be completely honest I don't think I dislike any character off the top of my head tbh, since Coral's grown on me a lot.

1. Dot. She has an unique kind of charisma with the duality between her two selves (Dot and Nidothing) that makes you understand why are the writers drawn to her and why she got fantastic stories in the first season, she's great introvert representation. Also, she feels like a great battler and the real successor of Ash's "improvise with what you have" battle style.
2. Ult. Yeah, I'm as surprised as you, but I think someone impulsive and smug like him is what Horizons needed to revitalize cast dynamics and boy he delivers great comedy. His backstory is also kinda relatable, you understand why he turned out that way.
3. Coral. She's such a blast (pun intended), steals every scene she appears and works well as a villain you'd like to see more of. Her acting in the Latin American dub is amazing as her actress is clearly having a lot of fun.
4. Oria. I'm drawn to women in male-dominated jobs and she delivers with a mix of charisma and badassery as well as great dedication to the ship and the RVT. Her relationship with Friede is cute.
5. Murdock. Likewise, caring buff men are also my type of character, his happy attitude is fun to see and he develops interesting relationships with Friede and Dot as well as Pokemon like Alcreamie, chubby Lycanroc and Tatsugiri.

Honorable mentions: Diana, Liko, Roy, Mollie, Ann, Briar, Spinel.

Out of the main three I'd say that Dot is easily my favourite. Started out as someone who'd we mostly see in her Nidothing costume and preferred to just stay in her room for the most part but after she got Quaxly, she came out of her comfort zone and interacted more and more with the cast and now she's basically joined Liko and Roy on their journeys being the third member of the group. The development that she's had has been the most consistently solid and I have high hopes she'll go out on a good note when Journeys is over.

Amethio I really enjoy as well since he started out on the villain side with the Explorers going after Liko's pendant and then Rayquaza only to eventually get fired by Spinel and walk a different path to eventually help Liko and co. It's a massive refreshing change from having all the villains be evil for the entirety of the show and like with Dot his episodes have been pretty solid.

Friede, Murdock, Spinel, Diana and of course good ol' Cap (wouldn't be my profile pic for nothing) are my other big faves.

i'm going to be honest i always assumed cap was your #1 favorite character on account of your icon and your signature so i'm happy to know your actual favorites now lol

reading your reply made me happy just cause of how much he clearly means to you :enzap:

Friede, I liked his design from the start. I love the combination of pilot googles & jacket, with a cool flying ship that somewhat reminds of me of Howl's Moving Castle. It gave me like a studio ghibli adventure vibe and quite frankly I would watch a saga about him and his adventures. I also think he has a lovable personality. He is bold, smart, goofy and protective. His backstory episode with Pikachu is one of my favorite episodes from recent sagas. There is nothing I dislike about him.

Mine is Dot. I really like her development across the series, and her relationship with Liko is cute and important to both of their characters.
