Okay, I posted this in the Video Game section, but had it closed. I think this should be okay for here:

CoroCoro showed a map of Unova that was covered in ice. Now, the Japanese BW2 website has the map up:

What do you think? Is this just some clever way of hiding the rest of Unova for now, or is Unova really in an ice age?

I'm still not buying it.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

It can't be. Where would the pokemon league go? Also, Village Bridge, and Skyarrow Bridge are still there.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

huh? this isn't a matter of opinion. the ice we see is covering the map, not the land. it's clearly stated in corocoro and the site which also shows the map on paper to make it clear as possible. i am so confused D:

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

If it was just a way to obscure bits of the map they didn't want us seeing yet, why would the text in the CoroCoro article and on the website specifically mention it and say things to the tune of "something mysterious has happened, what could it be"? That's what I don't understand about the "it's not real, it's just hiding the map" argument.

that just means it is indeed hiding changes. an ice age in unova would be much more dramatic than what corocoro and the site say, which is just "i wonder what relation this has to a strange event in unova?". if it was simply that the ice is there, you wouldn't be wondering what relation it had. you'd know, that it was a ton of ice coating the region. that it says "what could be going on where we can't see because ice got all over our map" is the key point here.

this post is all messed up for some reason but i've got a breakdown translation here: http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/f650/changes-additions-unova-discussion-130642/index4.html#post3923295

again this is not a matter of opinion and i don't have some anti-ice-age-biased agenda. i'm just trying to express that the japanese says a very specific thing and there is no point to all of this speculating or "what is your opinion". if it was written in english, and i wish it was now, this would not be happening. it's just lack of understanding of the japanese that is causing it :( though now that the site went out of its way to show ice on top of the paper-like map (even going over the papery edges) i am even MORE confused why people still insist it's actually coating unova!

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

Okay so ice isn't actually covering Unova. It's just an aesthetic feature of the map to conceal changes in Unova.

Can we just put this to rest already?

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

Okay..so if the ice is covering a piece of paper..what is the point of that? Just to keep us in suspense until the games come out? They could've simply covered eastern Unova and all that with clouds.

The thought of having half of Unova being covered by ice had so much potential and went well with the whole thing of Kyurem not being able to control his ice powers.

The point of using ice and not clouds is because the entire game is having a very icy theme to it, even the (previous) official site was "coated in ice" . And don't give up hope on there not being lots of ice. We have no idea what it's covering up. It states something's happened, hints that it may have to do with ice, and we will probably get to see when the full, de-iced map is revealed... maybe next month?

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

Sorry Sunnyshore, I disagree with you. I think to have it on full on the official trailer sort of disproves your point. Also it covers pointless parts around the northern edge and seems to go right around to show an icy effect, why would they cover all that if there only trying to hide changes to cities? If they were to cover just a bit, then yeah I'd go along with the possibility it was an aesthetic, but to cover so much, and the fact we've got new gyms, and the ice covers 2 old gyms, I gotta say I think it's because the ice is covering them.

it's not something to disagree with me about. it's not my opinion or my speculation. again please look at the map on this page: see map
see how the ice covers the paper edges of the map. it's almost like they did that just so everyone would understand even if you can't read japanese.

anyways, the trailer is irrelevant. the regions still had parts hidden by clouds in previous trailers before everything was revealed.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

It might be something to cover those areas until you beat the first ending. In Black and White, Team Plasma took over before you could beat the champion, or the ice might go away before the first ending. If the ice is really there.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

Either way I think it would be fun to have an 'ice age' type theme, I'd really like it if they made a game where there was no story line. Go wherever you want to go, meet other people 'online' so to speak like a giant world where people can log on and play for a more interactive experience.

You've misinterpreted what they've said then. Because it was quite clear on Pokémon Smash today that this ice is covering the actual land. We were told we'd have to play the games to find out why. This ice will certainly vanish during gameplay somehow, but it's a plot element, it's not just decoration to hide things from us for now.

but they didn't say it's on the land at all. they even said the word "map" in english and it said マップ on the text below as they spoke. masuda said once we go through the game we'll see what is going on, not that we will have to vanquish the ice, or that the land is covered by ice. just that we'll see once we've got the game. ゲーム進めばわかる was his words. meaning we'll have to work our way over to that side to see what is happening over there.

i know everyone is saying the strange event over there must be this ice on the land -- against all the evidence that the ice is on the physical map, which includes the graphic on the site. and i am tired of being told i am misinterpreting or having it implied i am messing up my japanese. because i am not, and that the ice we see is on the MAP and not the land is not up for debate. they made that nice paper-edge graphic and say map multiple times, then map in english on pokesmash. please don't misunderstand. my only point is that the ice we see there is on the map. i have NO idea what it is covering up, what event happened, what we need to find out in the game. nobody knows... since it's been covered up by a half-frozen map.

i don't know what to say anymore. :

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

I don't care who said what, the map image clearly shows that the ice covering the map not the land itself. If it actually is supposed to be covering the land, that's a pretty lazy job of showing it.

Your issue is that you're misinterpreting what's meant by the word "map". The word "map" in this context is referring to the actual game area, not to a physical map item. It's like how if you had a level covered in snow and ice in an FPS or strategy title, you'd refer to it as a "snow map" or something similar.

In any case, I've tweeted Masuda a question to clear up his meaning, and with any luck he might answer that. I'm quite certain of my own translations, and I feel that you've misinterpreted the context of the word in the statement.

I don't care who said what, the map image clearly shows that the ice covering the map not the land itself. If it actually is supposed to be covering the land, that's a pretty lazy job of showing it.

It's showing it like that because the ice will most likely be *removed* during gameplay. Just as in most animation, you can pick which bricks are going to burst out as someone crashes through a wall because of the way they've been animated slightly differently.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

That's a possible scenario, I guess. It would mean that we'd be uncovering the ice as we play, though I'm not sure how they'll make that work.

But I'm not really buying it just yet. Let's see if we get some screenshots of ice-covered land.

Given the huge ice theme of Kyurem and it's signature attacks, I'm sure that it's tied to the plot with Kyurem somehow.

Re: Your opinion or the ice covering Unova.

In the new trailer on the site, you can actually see the cities underneath the ice, so they're clearly not hiding anything as they would have made the ice opaque not transparent. Also it just fits in so well, giant ice monster on the loose, half the land frozen, new professor, who is seen to be in the opening credits, now yes, there is a long list of excuses you could make to try and discount each one like people did before HGSS were revealed, but it's becoming more and more obvious, that the ice is actually there.

Also sunnyshore, I think you are taking "on the map" too literally I don't know about you, but when you refer to something as being "on the map", that doesn't actually mean its on top of a physical piece of paper, it usually mean its drawn on.

If I say, oh there's a mountain on the map, that doesn't mean there is a giant rock formation coming out of the map, it means the map is displaying what is there in real life. Similarly, you can say there is ice covering the map, meaning it's there in reality, not just ice on your piece of paper.
