Your pile of shame

If you've been a gamer for a while, you almost certainly have a pile of shame. Games that, for whatever reason, you've never got around to playing (or at least never got around to finishing). Maybe you got the game while you were busy with other things, or you started playing it but got distracted with real life. No matter the reasons, the pile always seems to grow, because there's always more games coming out, and real life is never ending.

Asking people to share all the games on their piles of shame is probably impossible, since these can get massive if you've been gaming for a long time. But what are some of the games on your pile of shame that you're always telling yourself that you'll play?

In my case:
  • Okami (HD) - Bought the original on the Wii many years after it came out, barely got into it. The HD remake came out on Switch, and I bought it thinking I'd actually have time to properly play it... then never did.
  • A whole bunch of Fire Emblem games - I love this franchise, but it's been absolutely ages since I actually managed to finish a game. Heck, I never even started playing Engage (after purchasing it years late when it went on heavy discount)!
  • Pokopia - Look, I'm waiting for the DLC, then I promise I'll get back to completing everything, okay?

oh boy my list of steam games i need to play is ever growing...

-Devil May Cry Collection: grabbed it on sale because i was told it'd probably be up my alley with my video game playstyle only for me to never touch it ever.
-Fallout New Vegas: was gifted it by a friend and i know a lot of people who really love it, but it's so different from other games i've played that i'm a bit intimidated by it.
-Ace Attorney Apollo Justice: Love the original trilogy and beat the first case of this game and was like "that was fun i'll play more later!" and never played more.
-Yakuza 0: I keep starting this game, getting distracted from playing partway through and then forgetting what happens in the game and restarting, i swear one day i'll actually beat the game.

PLAY OKAMI ok that applies to everyone, it's such a great game!! but uh.... i suppose i don't really have much room to talk considering my own pile of shame:

  • new pokemon snap - i got this when the hype was fresh (so basically when this game was new), but i just.... never really got the type to play it? i don't think i even took this out of the plastic. i've just been SO preoccupied with other games
  • hollow knight - genuinely same reason with this one. i got it because At Some Point i was really excited about playing it, and then shit happened i guess (whether real life/job stuff) and it fell to the wayside. i plan on getting to this eventually.... hopefully.
  • outer wilds - this... i guess doesn't count because like, i at least gave it a shot, but i've also barely played it at the same time because i didn't really enjoy it, so it just sits in my steam library collecting dust.
  • dragon ball fighterz - bought this on sale last year, played it for maybe 20 minutes, haven't touched it since. i'm really not big on the tekken/street fighter-esque style of games
  • monster hunter generations ultimate - got this years ago and i don't even remember if i've ever even got past the first hour of the game or if i've just purchased it and let it sit. genuinely don't know if i'll even play the mainline monster hunter games since they seem a bit more.... complex than getting into the stories games (which i'm more familiar with)
these days, i try to be more careful about my game purchases because i want to ensure i actually play them, or at the very least, make some decent progress in them if i'm not all that interested, so it wouldn't be a waste of money.

Too many to name, I have a massive backlog containing even games I really like and want to continue but instead choose to do or play something else. But to name a few:

  • KOTOR, and other older Star Wars games I bought as a bundle for my Switch (I think it's called the heritage collection or smth). I really like them! But older games often require more brainpower than I can manage so I end up playing dumber games instead;
  • Digimon games on Steam that aren't Time Stranger: bought all of them as they went on a massive sale, but didn't get too far in any of them even though I really wanted to;
  • Oblivion and FNV - two RPGs that are often considered better than their sequels, but I couldn't push past the janky gameplay. For Oblivion, I tried the remaster too, but its world just isn't as enjoyable to me as Skyrim's.

I have many Switch games I bought, thinking I'd spend time to play them... But I didn't. Tears of the Kingdom and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers : Rita's Revenge are especially high on that list because I bought them for two of my birthdays.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition... I got the game when it released, but never started playing it, and at this point I'm probably going to save it for when I get a Switch 2.

There's also a bunch of games that I bought for low prices on sale but still haven't played yet, such as Final Fantasy II, Yooka-Laylee, Nexomon, or Ori and the Blind Forest.

Here is mine:
All my switch games: Fuck the orange screen of death my switch has rn

Mischief Makers (1997): I struggled with this game and stopped playing it while back

Smash 64: After getting a rom hack of it i stopped playing it after many failed attempts for Jigglypuff's Board the Platforms stage just to unlock the sound test

Honestly, I have backlogged games on many systems, from the Switch to the Xbox One, GOG and Steam accounts, games I could play on my Sega Genesis Flashback, plus several older games, PC or console. Together, I must have at least well over three dozen games I haven't even touched yet.

I like cutesy farming games , so I bought a lot of Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon games for 3DS/Switch, but I haven't had time to play them. I also have the 'Tales of Symphonia/Beseria/Zestiria' waiting for him, along with the Elder Scrolls series, on Steam...

The Tales series is one I've been meaning to get into forever.
i had a lot of fun with them so far, its just that once my play sessions get interrupted i kind of... struggle to finish games lol. my favorite of the bunch is definitely tales of destiny though.
i also have a ton of the older fire emblem games on my backlog as well... i love RPGs of any kind, but they're always so long..!!!

Right? I still need to pick Bravely Default back up, and then I have Dragon Quest XI, both Octopath Travelers, FFVII Rebirth, SMTV:V, Soul Hackers 2, and more collecting dust... and that's just the JRPGs!

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
I bought it after I finished Breath of the Wild, but I kept it holding for quite a while. Then I played a bit. But I was very disconnected from the first game. So I thought I could play Botw once more and then play this game. I am still playing Botw and haven't touched it in the past 2 yeas.

  • GTA V
It was going well and smooth but I was stuck in a particular mission, and it sort of derailed my interest. After countless attempts, I haven't touched it for a year now. I will get back to it now that GTA VI has been announced.

  • Gris & Neva
Same developer. Great game in theory. Somehow lost my interest in the puzzles when I couldn't figure out what to do. Both are just holding there for 1+ year now.

If you can make it through to the end of Neva then I highly recommend it. One of the most emotive games I've ever played.

I should also add: Palworld and Fields of Mistria. Very different games but I bought them for the same reason, that being friends' recommendations. I feel bad about not playing them cause said friends were happy when I got them.
