As we all know, there are certain "Do-s" and "Don't-s" of Forum-Based Roleplaying; What are your "Don't-s?"

Tennising. I dislike having to read 10 pages of posts that have nothing to do with anything, and are usually just one line posts about characters making out.

Oddly, I actually have a pretty high tolerance for tennising. Not sure why, it just never really upset me.

On the other hand, proper character-development is a must for me. When characters say or do things that don't make sense given their background, I tend to become rather frustrated.

I hate when people re-use the same name for the character as the only noun that they use for their character in a post.
Example:

Bob sat on the couch. "There is nothing on TV" Bob sighed. Bob then got up and went into the kitchen. Bob looked in the fridge...(etc.)

Hehe... I forgot about that one. Drives me nuts, too - but I usually just tack it up to lazy writing. There are a few other peeves of mine that I usually categorize under "Intentionally Annoying Me."

this. I have to read 14 pages just to watch 2 RPers making out.
Oh, and I hate posts with only OOC. Its annoying .__.

Oh! What about people doing something totally random! *Gives Mouthful of Pi a look* Like I don't know... Saying a digimon is running around when it's a shape shifter world... Or a Team Rocket thug in a PC... Or even a Pikachu is biting on their ear... I know I'm random but I kinda stick to the main idea of the RPG...

But Animal I've Become doesn't have a real plot, so it's my random thread...

I get a bit ticked off by randomness overkill, but I've become sort of desensitized to it lately thanks to Ampiomach Academy. *coughDonocough*

Yeah, randomness is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to RPing.

Blatant disregard for any sense. For example, "I'M GONNA BEAT HIM UP WITH MY FISTS UNTIL HE'S 30% DEAD SO HE'LL BE IN THE HOSPITAL, AND THEN I'LL SHOOT HIM SO HE'LL BE 70% DEAD, AND HE'LL BE IN PAIN SO I'LL MAKE HIM 90% DEAD, AND THEN HE'LL, BE 100% DEAD AFTER I PUNCH HIM MORE!!!!" t (Ăł_Ăł) t

I've actually seen people write that in real life.

I have no problem with tennising, though, if it's something at least somewhat important (i.e. a Pokémon battle, a convo, etc.).

*ahem*

That said, I agree with several of you on the topic of "randomness" - those who employ it typically come off as attention-seeking, plot-devaluing, and generally *think* they're hilarious. Every once in a while, it is genuinely amusing, but when someone leans on it constantly, it becomes rather dull - ironically.

I've never been bothered by randomness...Mouthful of Pi (The No More Hero back then) did confuse me when I first joined, but I quickly got used to it. His ways are slightly rubbing off on me, but I know what RP's to be serious in and which ones I can get away with it in.

Some people like randomness, some people don't. It's usually bad if overused, though. Thing is, humor is built on subversion of expectations. Normally, in an otherwise serious game, randomness can be unexpected. The part of the brain that handles humor and the bit with shock are pretty close. But if you use it too much, it becomes expected.
Still, it can be fun to write like that. Very liberating. So I do do it on occasion. I would like to point out that in AIHB, the parts I did were actually pretty well received, because Bpj and ES are both into random humor, and DF was gone most of the time anyway. That, and it was a good excuse to have a ton of anime characters all in one RP and make a sparkly vampire janitor dude.
Anyway, so the thing is, sustained randomness is bad, but if added to an already humorous situation, it can enhance the absurdity already there. Think of it like salt: Too much is really bad, but just enough is really tasty, especially on fries and eggs and stuff! What I'm getting at is that randomness can rarely, if ever stand on it's own. Instead, it acts as a roof, built on a house and foundation of pre-existing humor.
Oh, also, another thing that bugs me is when people introduce ninja pirate zombie robots. The concept of a bunch of cool things combined was cool when it was first thought of, but it's waaaaay overdone now. Also, when people mistake satire and social commentary for randomness.

Is it just me, or is this thread mostly just for whining about things we don't like in RPs? Wouldn't it be better to actually use this thread to try and fix some of this stuff somehow? Maybe write a guide to proper use of randomness?

No-one's mentioned it...

Hmmm...

"WHEN SOMEONE DOES ALL CAPS TO SHOW THEY'RE SHOUTING AND EVEN THEN PUTS SHOUTED AT THE END!" I shouted.

And also, bad Grammar. Drives me nuts. There was more of them than us? What the hell Robbie Williams? Get a BRAIN!

"Do whatever I says when I says it." Eminem. SERIOUSLY?

And songs are bad enough. Don't get me started on RPGs. I put songs because I don't want to accidently flame an RPGer. But still.

Okay, MoP is awesome...

But Quilava, here's the thing, if you want a fun RP, limiting it all to seriousness, limits others creativity, and leads to a boring RP.

Um... yes, yes it is, "mostly about whining about things we don't like in RP's." *glances at title of thread*

Writing a guide to proper use of randomness might be an interesting project, but not for this thread, as it is about more than just that one particular issue - furthermore, I suspect that trying to systematize randomness would not be very well-received by the majority of the RP'rs who employ it (seems somewhat self-defeating - you can't impose order on randomness ;-) ).

I'm not sure I agree (with the second part, obviously MoP is awesome :p ). An RP can quite easily be fun while still making sense, in fact I find RP's where I'm constantly saying to myself "WTF just happened?!?!" rather... un-fun.

Also, since I was one of the RP'rs who mentioned a general disdain for "randomness," I feel the need to point out the distinction between being "random" and employing humor in your writing. An RP can be humorous at times while not defying logic and reason, in fact I tend to view randomness as one of the laziest routes to humor. It's easy to come up with something for your character to say or do that makes no sense in the current context "for the lulz" - but to actually evoke humor from a serious, realistic course of events is far more challenging and, in my opinion, impressive.

Requiring your roleplay to follow a logical, semi-reasonable progression of events can be far more creatively stimulating than the rather simpler alternative - utter chaos, from where I'm standing.

Then again, I've heard I'm a self-righteous stick-in-the-mud who "hates fun."
