After seeing Viola, in both the games and anime, I must say I was rather impressed with her skills for the first gym leader. In the games, it's safe to say that she will give you trouble no matter which starter you pick. Naturally Chespin is at a type disadvantage, Fennekin will have its Fire moves cut short by Water Sport, and Froakie will have a neutral standing.

Then in the anime, utilizing both Sticky Net and Ice Beam as an ice field was pretty clever on her part, while debilitating for her opponent. So I ask you guys, if you could be a gym leader in the games, what strategy would you use? That wouldn't be overly hard, but would be fairly challenging nonetheless?

I would use a Mega Absol to force switches from opponent's leads who find themselves unable to set up Stealth Rock due to my Magic Bounce and set up a Swords Dance on the switch, then hit some stuff with Sucker Punch and Play Rough and then Baton Pass to my Crawdaunt or Bisharp or Krookodile to go for a sweep once I've softened their team, with Mandibuzz acting as a failsafe wall to regain control of the match's momentum if things get out of hand and an Assault Vest Drapion to act as a powerful mixed tank and pivot.

Wait, I do that already! Check out the Bulbagarden Battle League to enjoy a fun, Gym League styled challenge designed to help casuals and new players get into the extraordinarily fun world of competitive battling. Check out the link in my sig and keep an eye on the Bulbagarden Battle Center for our Weekly Discussions, Mentorship Program, and exhibition matches, and look forward to Season 1 where you will be able to challenge different types of Gym as well as an Elite 4 consisting of 4 of our leaders selected via tournament. [/shamelessselfpromotion] :)

Ehhh this is NOT what I had in mind :p

I just sat back, and watched my Pokemon kill everything with ease.

I just used a flying type on the first gym, was easy.

Outside of starting out with a SE Pokemon, I do nothing special for a Gym Battle.

As for if I was a gym leader, I'd put everything to sleep with fast Pokemon with sleep moves and stuff, no sleep clause in game ;o.

I'd use Pokemon designed to utilize the opponents strengths. Wobbuffet, Imposter Ditto and Prankster Whimsicott. Then again, all Gym Leaders are too easy in the game since RPG Rule #1 being that the higher level entity wins.

I think OP is asking if YOU were a Gym Leader what strategy you would employ. Mine is simple, I'd be a Bug leader too, and I would definitely lead out with a Galvantula to use Sticky Web, Rain Dance, then Thunder if possible. If I can't get to Thunder I send out an Armaldo with Swift Swim to quickly Rock Slide Flying and Fire types, and Aqua Tail to finish off Rock types. The switch makes Pokemon that come in slower, and anything else I'd X-Scissor. I will also have a Parasect with Dry Skin as an interim Pokemon.

My final, most powerful Pokemon is a Heracross with Heracrosite, Pin Missile, Arm Thrust, Night Slash and Stone Edge. As you can tell Flying Pokemon will have an easy time with my last two, but that's only if they can surpass my Galvantula and Armaldo.

Name: Karlos
Order: 8th to be challenged
Badge: Buzz Badge
TM: 81 X-Scissor
Pokemon:
Galvantula - Lvl. 39: Sticky Web, Rain Dance, Thunder, Energy Ball
Parasect - Lvl. 39: Spore, Leech Seed, Protect, X-Scissor
Armaldo - Lvl 41: X-Scissor, Rock Slide, Aqua Tail, Earthquake
Heracross (Heracrosite) - Lvl 43: Arm Thrust, Pin Missile, Night Slash, Stone Edge

There we go! Now that's what I'm talking about! And Rain Dance would discourage Fire move usage too. Very nice team :)
