The new series premiered today on The CW.

John Campbell did a great job voicing Yusei. Ed Paul's portrayal of Jack Atlas leans more on the absurd side, but he only had a minor role in the premier episode, so it may be better.

There were a few odd script rewrites (namely, Yusei and Ushio knowing each other from some sort of detention center), but on the whole it was a lot better than 4Kids' previous work on Yugioh. I have to give them credit for the new theme song, "Hyper Drive," as well.

Overall I thought it was a pretty strong series opener.

Also, the CW4Kids website has revealed the new dub names for Aki, Lua, and Luca. Their new names are certainly... odd. Aki is now known as Akiza, while Lua and Luca have had their names swapped. Lua, the male twin, is now known as Luka, while Luca will be called Luna.

For something that seemed so utterly stupid in concept, it was a lot more well done then GX was. I'm waiting to hear more about these 'speed spells' though.

I like the way 4Kids keeps pretending they don't know what the 5D's means so they can make more puns in their commercials that don't actually make sense.

Personally, I like the way 4Kids is handling this dub so far. They've kept both Jack Atlus's and Yusei's names, which was pretty good considering that they all were basically changed in GX. It's kind of a no-brainier for them though, Konami gave them a softball for this series, from the episodes I've seen, there isn't much to cut. (Which I still say was slightly disappointing, I was thinking 90s Apocalyptic Scifi Movie with Card games, but they made it a little more kiddy than that. The Japanese writers I mean)

I'm not too interested in YGO. Too many better anime to occupy myself with. I do read the manga in SJ monthly though. I wonder if 5Ds will be published in there?

Why do they still call it Yu-Gi-Oh if Yugi/Yami aren't even in it?

While it was a pun on Yugi's name, it still means "King of Games", so in case of GX and 5D's they are still trying to be king of games... well... card games anyways.

I'm also not sure if they made a 5D's comic yet. I haven't checked in a while, but I'm sure they still are doing the GX spin-off over there as well. (In V-Jump)

yeah theres not even a possibility that jaden or yugi will show up because as far into the future this is they would have died of old age

We've had characters come back from the dead before. This is a show about magical card games and evil spirits.

not trying be mean but could you please give me a few examples

I'm actually talking about sci-fi anime in general, and not just YGO. It's a possibility; that's all.

not like it matters anyway. Ushio's presence in the series indicates it doesn't take place that far into the future. For those who don't know, Ushio is actually the bully that Yugi defeated way back at the beginning of the manga/Toei series.

Actually, the Ushio in this series is named Tetsu Ushio, while the Ushio in Duel Monsters was named Satori Ushio, so it's unlikely that they're the same character (though they are probably related).

I made a somewhat exciting discovery especially for music geeks like me. For the first time in the history of the franchise, 4Kids is using Japanese music in a Yugioh dub! The music that plays when Rally is introduced for the first time was borrowed from a later episode. It was only one piece, and it wasn't played in the right spot, but I'll take whatever small victory I can get. Naturally, I'm a lot more optimistic about this dub!

THIS SHOW ROCKS! I'm glad the show has gotten back to being so serious like the old school show.

I was not expecting Jack Atlas' Australian accent. And did anyone else notice that they switched Nerve and Blitz's names?

Did they really keep the Japanese music?

All in all, I really want a Montage Dragon! I wonder if they'll integrate the Speed World rules into the actual card game.

Maybe into a video game or something, I don't think it's possible to do fairly unless you have a computer..

As for the music, It's cool that they kept some, even though a bunch is changed... I just think that, from what I've seen, 5D's music is the weakest of the 3. (Well... I don't know, it's not saying much, but the original Duel Monsters was really good)

I don't think that the series takes that far into the future. From what I've heard, 5D's takes place fifteen years after GX ends. So DM characters like Yugi and Kaiba would be in their forties while GX characters like Jaden and Syrus would be in their thirties. Roughly anyway.

As for 5D's, it completely rocked. I'm not one of those anime fans who puts much of an importance on names or background music, but at least 4Kids keeping most of the names and some of the background music does provide with less tension on some forums I go to. I thought that the voice acting was great, especially John Campbell's voice for Yusei. I liked Dan Green's voice for Trudge, the officer, as well and I did find it interesting with how he voiced the bully from that flashback moment in episode three of Duel Monsters with that same voice. Jack's voice felt a bit off with me, but we didn't really see him that much during this episode so it might be different when he has more of a role in the future.

I also really liked the new way of dueling on the motorcycles. It was a good choice to have some of the new rules explained, such as Speed Spells, and I did love seeing the monsters run right along side the duelists like that. I also absolutely love the theme song, Hyper Drive, and I'm glad that it won the theme song contest. While I'm still hoping for 4Kids to eventually dub season four of GX, I'm glad that they're doing some great work with 5D's and it definitely looks like it will be an awesome series.

I saw the second Trudge vs. Yusei Speed Duel just this last weekend, and was fairly impressed; how many duels have there been that involved actual realtime time limits(granted, this one was imposed from outside the duel, but still)? Trudge certainly used his deck well enough until the end(when he missed Yusei's use of that spell card to circumvent the effect of the officer's wall monsters), and it was nice to see multiple Synchro/Tuner monster pairs. And at the end of the tunnel, Yusei spots---and is spotted by---the man who stole his prize card, one Jack Atlas. I'll give the writers this much; they've certainly got a flair for tension.

You know, for some reason, Jack has me thinking about those old pre-TV editoral cartoons portraying now-wealthy immigrants of previous years attempting to prevent others from the same country/region from entering the U.S. Just a thought that came to mind as I was watching YGH 5Ds over the past couple of weeks(I only recently started the week before last).

I miss the battle city days, where Marik would (more-or-less) kick Yugi's ass.

I promised myself that I wouldn't watch 4kids ever again a few years ago, is it THAT good?

I don't remember the Yugi "getting his ass-kicked" part in Yugioh... except maybe the end (lol), but I do miss psycho Yami.
