There is word going around that the infamous timeline for The Legend of Zelda will be revealed next Wednesday in the Hyrule Hystoria book. There is always a chance it could just be a "History of the franchise" thing with the games mapped out in chronological order (As in, year of release). Other than that though, this could be worth keeping an eye on?

EDIT: Here's the official timeline (source):

First, we have:
Skyward Sword -> The Minish Cap -> Four Swords -> Ocarina of Time ->

What happens next depends on the ending of Ocarina of Time. If Zelda heeds Link's warning during the game's epilogue, then we get the following:
Majora’s Mask -> Twilight Princess -> Four Swords Adventures

However, if Link is to defeat Ganon as an adult instead of as a child, we get the following:
Wind Waker -> Phantom Hourglass -> Spirit Tracks

and if Link is unable to defeat Ganon at the end of Ocarina of Time:
A Link to the Past -> Oracle of Seasons/Ages -> Link’s Awakening -> The Legend of Zelda -> The Legend of Zelda II

"Infamous" is a good word to describe the Zelda timeline.
Sounds interesting, though. I wonder what the people over at Zelda Universe Forums will make of it.

Didn't the officials already said there is no Zelda timeline not long ago when someone emailed them his theory of the timeline?

No, Aonuma confirmed awhile back that there is a Zelda timeline, but that it's on a secret document that will never be shown to the public. He and Miyamoto have also both confirmed different timeline placements for some games, such as TP being after MM and SS being before OoT.

I think this is just a timeline of the games' release dates, like the OP suggests.

Please, just release the damn timeline already. You'll reduce some of the stupid arguments going along with the "fanbase" based on how different people order things.

Interesting, I look forward for the end of the timeline debates until the next game comes out, if this is truely the Hyrule timeline. :3

Apparently...Ocarina of Time doesn't just split into Wind Waker and Twilight Princess...but Link to the Past as well. :0

Here's the official timeline. Yes, it is a split timeline - to be specific, after Ocarina of Time, it can split into three ways:

It is interesting to note that all of the games in the timeline before the split have been released or re-released this year; yet, no games from Alternate Timelines 1 and 2 were.

Source.

Three things that confuse me about this official timeline:

1. Link didn't have a hat in Minish Cap while SS Link does.

2. Was Vaati the first reincarnation of Demise or is it still Ganondorf?

3. Ganondorf died in Twilight Princess, but his alter ego appeared in Four Swords Adventure.

So yeah, what the heck?

Still, hardcore Zelda fans are going to find a problem or loophole one way or another.

Timeline's pretty much how I expected it to be...after Ocarina of Time they started to have a clear goal of a timeline (if you just count the 3D Zeldas, it flows rather well and it's more purposeful they were trying to connect them since games had begun to become "cinematic"), but then they had to account for the older games.

I still think the Minish Cap/Four Swords should be viewed as an alternate time-line, though.

I don't buy this. I clearly remember reading in an official interview that Aonuma and company weren't ever going to show us the timeline and that it's on a confidential document.

Plus, FSA Link is clearly the same Link as the one in FS, so there's no way the two games can be so far apart. This timeline has so many flaws that it has to be fake.

EDIT: Also, didn't Miyamoto also say that Skyward Sword is supposed to lead into OoT? Why would TMC be after it then?

I hope they don't release the official time line, I like the speculation :C

Miyamoto has stated multiple times that there was never meant to be an official timeline. (well except for the canonically ordered games like OOT and Majora's Mask)

I've been a Zelda fan for 20+ years. I fail to see the importance of a timeline, because with the exception of the games connected to each other (OoT/MM/WW, and the WW sequels, the Oracle games, and the first two) the games are otherwise standalone and independent of each other. Beyond bits and bobs of lore, and Ganon's constant presence, a "timeline" is extraneous.

For example, what does Twilight Princess have to do with OoT? You have the Temple of Time and the Zoras. Interesting bits of lore, but the games have very little to do with each other. The Sages, for example, are different entirely. Some games are direct sequels or are linked games, but these have their own story arcs which have nothing to do with the other story arcs. There are numerous games that are ENTIRELY standalone - Minish Cap, LTP, Link's Awakening, Four Swords, and FSA.

Where and when did he ever say this? Like I said before, I read an interview with Aonuma where Aonuma said there was a Zelda timeline, but it's confidential and secret and would never be revealed to the public.
