As we have seen in the anime (at least in Japan), Zoey/Nozomi has something against doing both gyms and contests. However, we have also seen that there are several people who already do both gyms and contests, such as Nando, Fantina, and Juan (to some extent). So why do you think Zoey/Nozomi is against it?

Zoey is a real example of a tomboy, not the pseudo-tomboy that Misty was. Its funny, because Zoey is generally nice (as seen in the Buizel ep), but she can be a real bitch if she doesn't like something.

I guess Ash participating in a Contest when he's going for Gyms ticked her off, and also probably because he was taking attention away from her darling, Dawn.

I hope they develop Zoey more in the future, at this point she reminds me a lot like Drew when we first saw him. At the start people wrote Drew off as a Gary clone, but as the series went on the writers developed Drew into his own character.

I imagine there are a lot of things the writers have planned for Zoey, but as with most rivals, we won't get to find them out until the series progresses.

Ash wasn't really serious about being a coordinator, which is what upset her. If Ash had won the ribbon then decided not to enter any more contests it could hurt somebody who was serious about that goal. All the people you were serious about both fields, so Zoey wouldn't have a problem with them.

Once again though Ash entered for the sake of Aipom as it wanted to compete, and because he was talked into it by Dawn and Brock so it's not his fault for entering.

Plus, didn't she give Ash her little "Don't Do Both" speech BEFORE she knew his motivations for entering? If I recall, the reason she told him that was because she overheard him saying something like "I'm going to win this Contest and I'm going to win my first gym too". At that point she couldn't have known what his true feelings for contests were.

I don't see how Nozomi is that similar to Drew. Drew was antagonistic towards May when they first met, but Nozomi has been friendly to Dawn since the beginning.

Maybe she has a grudge against Fantina, or maybe she tried for gyms and ended up failing (wouldn't that be quite an issue to discuss in that sexism topic? ^^) Whatever it is, it does seem interesting, and I hope the writers decide to address the issue and delve into Nozomi's past or something cool like that.

One thing I found interesting in the Buizel episode was that, as soon as Nozomi appeared, Ash ran up to her so he could show off his Coal badge. You never saw him telling Drew about his gym badge progress in AG. Though he won't be doing anymore contests, it would be cool if Nozomi still remained a *sort-of* rival for Ash. Maybe he'll try and prove to her that gyms aren't evil ^^.

It's a cheap excuse for the writers to stop him from screwing with both plots and thereby making Dawn redundant. Don't look for in-character motives; they'll be spotty at best.

^ Ash has no real interest in Contests anyway, which is baffling as to why people honestly believed back then that Ash would continue entering Contests. Zoey didn't need to "give a reason" to prevent him from doing so, Ash is just not interested in the first place and the writers are not complete morons. (at least not anymore)

I hope Nando beats her in the contests LOL. Than she'd be all wow I got beaten by a person who does both conests and gyms, looks like I was wrong about how people can do both. Than that would a we bit of character development for Zoey.

I think Nando's gonna end up being Ash's "sub-rival" of sorts for the Sinnoh League too, as the additional rival to Paul. (Like Richie to Gary, and to a lesser extent Morrison to Tyson)

Maybe, although its pretty lame that we're going to have another rival with Roselia shoved down our throats after we just had Drew throughout all of AG.

I'll bet you anything Naoshi gets dropped and/or amounts to nothing, just like Nanako and Kiyo (a shame, really. I've been growing particularly fond of his seiyuu, Kazuya Nakai, lately).

It would be intresting if that happened, at least this guy would have had a lot of episodes and maybe character development before the league starts. So that would make him a we bit different from Morrison and Tyson, I mean the guy was here in the begining, no one would have ever imagined that he'd be Ash sub rival.

Well, Nando reappearing was surprising considering most people thought he was just a filler character at first.

He may return I guess, but it could go either way. The writers don't drop the ball with characters nowadays like they did with Casey and other recurring characters that they screwed up in the past.

and what about Kiyo (Nicolai)? It's interesting to note that he, Nanako, and Naoshi were all beginning trainers encountered at the beginning of their respective saga, and they've all recurred at least once now. In the case of the former two, I guess it would be assumed that they'd be rivals who'd make progress in collecting badges along with Satoshi, but as subsequent appearances would show, they couldn't collect badges at near the same rate as Satoshi if their life depended on it (given the supposed difficulty of gyms, I guess it would make sense to play them up as more of a challenge, with the likes of Satoshi, Shigeru, and likely Shinji being special cases), and because they just couldn't keep up, the writers had no choice but to ditch them (though, in Kiyo's case, they kinda brought the guy back for one episode just for the hell of it, only briefly touching upon the fact that Senri kicked his sorry ass, and he never shows up again).

Naoshi's probably gonna be no different, but given, his second appearance certainly seems better than Kiyo's was at least. I think he collected both a couple badges (one of which even Satoshi had yet to receive) and a ribbon, if I recall correctly. However, if he has a third appearance, he could still go the way of Nanako. She seemed like she was making good progress by the bug competition, only for her third appearance, near the very end, to reveal that she only has about half the badges Satoshi had.

Just watched DP 12 in english. Yep, it definitly seems like Zoey has some sort of grudge against doing both contests and gyms. She became mad at Ash as soon as he mentioned that he was going to do gyms, *before* she knew anything about his motives.

i think she got mad because ash sort of came off a little bit arrogant. almost like "ill just scoop up this ribbon quick then go to the league! peice o cake!" when she herself had probobly been studying and training specifically for contests for a while. So I can understand. I'm sure she wouldn't get so mad if he had been a bit more serious about it. but she did jump to conclusions fairly quickly, but then again, who doesn't sometimes?

I don't think he cared about the ribbon. And she got mad at him as soon as she found out that he does gym battles.

never said he cared about the ribbon. just saying he was acting sort of arrogant about it. he probobly didnt mean to, but it came off that way.
