Sleep is very important to all of us because it's something we all need in order to function properly day to day. The average person spends 1/3rd of their life asleep. I think sleep is more fascinating than we give it credit for. It's so mysterious, and so important, but we're so used to it that we don't even think much about it.

Questions: How many hours of sleep are you getting daily and what time do you normally fall asleep? Do you frequently remember your dreams or rarely? What type of dreams are you prone to have and do you ever experience nightmares? Would you prefer a world where humans never grew tired, or do you enjoy the feeling of falling asleep?

I've been getting less sleep than ever recently because I have to wake up super early for my job!! (I have to wake up 6 hours earlier than usual now so yeah), so I went about a week getting 1-2 hours of sleep each day. -__- It really made me think about why sleep is so important, but honestly I have no idea why we even need sleep, we just do?

Ughhhh I'm terrible about sleep. I'm a night owl and sometimes I stay up until sunrise, then I sleep til one in the afternoon. That's on days off though - when I have work, I tend to sleep about six or seven hours a night. Usually my bedtime is around two AM, I hate going to bed early!

Normally, I'll sleep for 8 hours, sometimes 7. Very rarely will I oversleep as that only happens when I come home for a long trip. The thing for me is that I cannot sleep without some kind of constant noise going on, like a fan blowing. If it's completely quiet, it's really hard for me to get to sleep.

As for my dreams, most of the time they tend to be really wacky. So much to the point that they do not make any sense. I'll wake up really confused and unable to recall them correctly. There are times where I do not remember them at all, despite how vivid they can be. Fortunately, I haven't had any nightmares in a while. There are two nightmares that I once had that I'll never forget because they actually woke me up in a cold sweat.

Try not to overdue it with lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation can be very dangerous to the human body and has been known to cause serious health problems.

I usually get around 8 or 9 hours of sleep, though there are times that my sleep schedule has been thrown off and I'll get less sleep than usual. Sometimes I remember my dreams, they usually involve food or video game characters, other times I just don't remember them and I feel confused after waking up. For nightmares, I haven't had them since I was a little kid, and those I always remember since they involve clowns.

There are times where I wish I didn't grow tired, though that only happens due to lack of sleep and it always seems to be when I'm at work, but I wouldn't want a world where we never sleep. I love sleeping so much, it's to the point that I have grown to hate mornings so much! :D

Id say I probably sleep about 7-8 hours a night. Occasionally I have problems with not sleeping enough and staying up too late but Ive been getting better at trying to get to bed at a reasonable time. I usually try to get to sleep by 1 AM if I can.

I almost never remember my dreams at all and I cant remember the last time I had a nightmare. I like sleeping as its kind of an escape from the stresses of life and an oppurtunity to have down time and refresh so no I wouldnt like a world where no one needed sleep.

About my normal time, 8-9 hours were fine by me. In some rare days, I tend to sleep 3-4 hours and then woke up to take a breather and then went back again to bed until morning.

What makes me love sleeping is that it's my one and only hobby (lol) after gaming. But what I hate about sleeping is I will have a back problem when I woke up and I had to spin it so it would crack although it's not healthy.

Oh my gosh I really envy you guys...

I have to struggle to get more than 5 hours of sleep on most days..

I have insomnia so it's hard for me to sleep. I need to take sleeping pills to fall asleep. I try to sleep about 8 hours a day on weekdays, but I often don't get enough sleep. I sleep 12 or more hours on weekends to make up for that.

Maybe I suggest you could take afternoon nap? Two or three hours of that might help. Don't just rely on pills, it's not healthy for your kidneys. And probably just less doing your work and be stress free so it could gradually restore your night duty.

So within the last year or so I started changing my sleeping habits cause my boyfriend is a total morning person and I am sooooooooo not. My perfect life would be going to bed at like 4am and waking up at like noon but the real world doesn't really work that way (so it's not that my boyfriend forced me to do this, it's just I took inspiration from him and also real life was like, "hey stop being an idiot." I will never want to get up at 4am and go running though, sorry baby~). I mean, unless your dream job is being a night security guard or something ^O__o^;; But yeah, I function a lot better in the evening and night. I'm more awake, more productive, and during the day I'm like uuuuugggggghhhhhh I want a nap.

Generally speaking I prefer ~10 hours of sleep so I don't eat the universe out of crankiness, but ever since I changed my sleeping habits I tend to wake up between 8 and 8:30 am every morning, even if I stay up late finishing a term paper or studying for an exam, which is all sorts of awful if it's like 2-4am when I go to bed. ^=__=^;; So I try to start getting ready for bed around 10pm every night, like some old person. Since I do have so much energy around that hour I generally end up falling asleep around 11:30 or midnight because I get distracted. I also have a dissociative disorder so I can literally blink and lose an hour ^<__<^;; (well, it will feel like 5-15min to me when it totally isn't) which explains why "getting ready for bed" seems to take me two hours :p

I usually remember my dreams, however if I wake up in the middle of the night and then go back to sleep I will remember that I did dream before that middle of the night waking up but I won't remember what they were about. Any dreams after that I generally remember. Most of my dreams are things like killing zombies with Leon S Kennedy (from Resident Evil) or being a spy or having magic powers (usually flying, an invincible bubble shield, throwing fireballs). Sometimes though I'll get crappy boring dreams like going to the supermarket. ^=__=^;; then I wake up cranky demanding my money back :p Like, recently I've been binge-watching some Silent Hill Let's Plays and instead of getting cool monster-killing dreams I get a dream where I'm going about my regular day, going to school or cooking lunch, except there's some random douchebag following me around the entire time providing colour-commentary on everything I'm doing. ^=__=^;; As for nightmares I've never had them. Like, I've had dreams that other people label as nightmares? Like the aforementioned zombie-killing dream? But like... isn't the entire point of a nightmare that you feel afraid or anxious or whatever in them? Cause I never do so I don't see them as nightmares. If something terrible is going to happen to me in a dream something always happens to fix it. Like the invincible bubble shield I mentioned stopping a bomb from killing me, or a giant monster appears so I grow wings and fly away, or in the dream time stops and then goes backwards and I get like a re-do or something. I don't know, man, my brain doesn't understand nightmares. :p

Like @ocelotlrama, I can't sleep if it's quiet. Even the A/C doesn't do it for me though. I sleep with my laptop next to me on the bed and a playlist on the entire night. It's to the point if my laptop becomes unplugged or iTunes commits suicide or anything happens to make the music stop I will wake up, without fail (and be really cranky about it). I also can't sleep if it's hot. This sucks cause my body will habituate to the temperature so I wake up and have to lower the temp on the A/C a couple of times per night (and I can't just start the night with it cold cause I'll be freezing). But I can't just kick off the blankets and sleep. For some reason I need to be covered too. I am a weirdo~

When I'm like super super busy I wish I didn't have to sleep but I do like sleeping. Besides we require sleep as human beings. People can literally die from sleep deprivation. However, regarding your question as to why we need sleep even scientists don't have a concrete answer. There are lots of theories though, and there have been studies done that prove that even invertebrates like fish sleep, and if you don't let them sleep they can't even swim properly anymore. You know what I'm jealous of though? Dolphins. They literally only need to sleep with one half of their brain while the other half stays awake and they can continue to be productive. Do you know how much I'd get done if I could do that?? ^>____<^;; Fun fact though: apparently a neuropeptide involved in regulating wakefulness (orexin) also promotes drug-seeking behaviours and food cravings in rat studies. The major theories of why we require sleep is restoration and adaptation, so to reset overstimulated brain synapses, and to cement new learning in the brain.

You always give me the most amazing replies @dragon_nataku :)

We have a lot of similarities, but when it comes to falling asleep I absolutely cannot have music playing or I will stay awake the entire night!

I once had insomnia for half a year in 10th grade. It was the worst feeling ever. >:/ I usually get 7 hours on most, 8 if I'm off. I can't sleep if I hear other people snoring, so I usually play white noise while I'm sleeping. :D

I used to have really cool dreams when I was younger of anime or video game characters and I was also a character sometimes! Sadly, I don't dream as much, it sucks!

It takes a while for me to get to sleep sometimes, even when I go to bed early. But I'll go to bed at 9:30 PM and I'll have woken up between 6:00-8:00 AM. All the time. When I was in high school, I'd wake up even earlier, especially when Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go would air at 6:30 AM.

Some days I get around 3-4 hours sleep, but on days I'm not working (or starting in the afternoon) I can easily sleep 9. My weekly sleep cycle consist of 4 hours sleep for days I'm working in the morning, and then playing catch up on days off. A wiser move would to try get 7 every day, but I just never seem to stick to it. 9 hours seems to be the most my body needs, if I go to sleep at 4am, I'll be awake by 1pm.

I normally sleep about 7-8 hours. I'm absolutely not a morning person but I feel awful/guilty if I sleep past ten. I usually get up around 9am; 7am is the earliest I can get up, and I can't promise you I won't go back to sleep.

Even though I'll go to bed at 10-11pm I won't sleep until a little past 1-2am. Sometimes it's as if I was never tired and I just want to get up and do stuff. I can't sleep when I'm hot. I especially hate when it gets a little cool (50-60) and my sister decides to crank up the space heater. Also, it bothers me when things are too still or too noisy (particularly loud music or movie). @ocelotlrama you might like an app called Ambio if you have android. It's an app that plays ambient noise like rain, thunder, wind chimes, white noise and such.

As for dreams, I almost always remeber them. In fact, I started a dream log last year because they fascinate me. They are usually divided into what I call "scenes" and are extremely random. For instance, in one dream I was dtifting down a stream in a canoe with some (cute :X3:) guy whom I apparently was very familiar with. The scene then changes (melts, I dare say) to black trees and snow, and I'm suddenly in a group of fur clad travelers trying to get back to our village. And nightmares? Yes, I have those. The worst (and recent, actually) was when I dreamed someone told me my grandmother had died. I woke up thinking I'd heard my mom's voice in my sleep and laid there panicking for about an hour.

A world with no sleep? No way. There's something about sleep that makes it so nice. The dreams are just a bonus. Now, if only waking up was just as nice...

I usually sleep for 6-7 hours a night.
