i would make it more character focused and more mature without making it completely unsuitable for children more of a family show

I would make a coming-of-age story with Ash, Serena, Lillie, Dawn, Clemont and Hau as the main cast. They'll all be in high-school, studying towards various pokemon related goals and professions.

I already know everyone on here would hate this lmfao.

I would rid off all main characters except Satoshi and Lilie, make Gladio a main character, and make it a travel/adventure based show. I also would add random and unnecessary references to the past seasons and characters, just for fun. I also would retcon some stuff.

Oh, there are plenty of things I would do and would have done. These are my ideas.

OS / Kanto

No pity Badges. All Badges would be obtained fair and square with good battles. The "subquests" of the Gym Leaders would be pre-requisites to gain the permission to fight them, so that the challengers can both show their fighting talents and other qualities.

Replace Misty's Goldeen with another more mobile Water-type, like a Seel or a Shellder. Maybe even replace Starmie with a Slowpoke, so that we could get some Psyduck and Slowpoke shenanigans.

OS / Orange

More competition for the Orange Badges. Having an Orange rival would have helped hype up the whole quest.

OS / Johto

Cut down on the fillers and have some sort of relevant plot throughout the saga, like the Celebi subquest. It could have easily tied it to the movie, just like Squishy had a role in the Magearna movie (even if it is minimal, it's still something).

Have Togepi better developed and be more than a useless token Pokémon.

Focus more on Misty's and Brock's goals.

AG / Hoenn

Work more on May's quest and have her struggle more. Also, have her fed up of Harley's tricks and teach him a lesson, especially during the Grand Festival.

Give a better finale to the whole Team Magma vs Team Aqua conflict.

Once again, focus more on Brock's quest.

Don't have Coordinator Jessie as a complete joke and give some kind of "hobby" to James as well.

DP / Sinnoh

Allow Ash to participate to the Champions League, but lose against the Elite 4.

Have Ursula winning an on-screen Contest against Dawn at least once.

Better matchup between Jessilina and Dawn during the Grand Festival.

Some more buildup and development for Dawn's Togekiss.

More interactions between Brock and Dawn.

Give more hints about Brock's future as a Pokémon Doctor, like having him participate to some more Pokémon Center-related jobs.

BW / Unova

Have Ash fight against the Champion after the League, but ultimately lose.

Tone down the insufferable meter of Iris and have her start at a lower "level". Have her struggling to be in-sync with Axew and actually working on trying to improve herself and teach to her Pokémon how to master his attacks.

No ridiculous "99 Victories" Excadrill, and instead have it as a more independent and wild Pokémon that needs to be tamed, a la Primeape.

Replace Emolga with the shy Deino.

Have Iris work much more to deserve Dragonite, or give her a Dragonair that needs to be trained to become a Dragonite, with its following problems (for example, Dragonite struggling with its new arms and wings).

Have Cilan start at a lower level as well, maybe as a B-Rank Connoisseur that needs a test to become an A-Rank.

Don't strip Team Rocket of all their personalities, but still keep their more "competent" missions.

Have Trip as a seasoned Trainer, but not as a Paul wannabe.

Give to Georgia a reason for being a Dragon Buster, like some traumatic experience or something.

Have Burgundy learn from her mistakes and become a B-Rank Connoisseur, maybe even getting over her grudge toward Cilan and deciding to work together to become better Connoisseurs.

XY / Kalos

Have a new main hero to partake to the League, with Ash being a more mentor-like figure who participates to the "Battle Mansion" challenge (or whatever the name of that place is).

Have Serena start her quest earlier, maybe around episode 20, and give more variety to the various Showcases, so that they won't look like low budget Contests.

Have Clemont work more on his courage mission and have him trying harder to help people and Pokémon alike with his technology.

Give some more screen time to Bonnie and have her interact more with Ash. Also, more interactions between Serena and Clemont.

SM / Alola

Revert back to the adventure formula and filter out all the excessive slapstick, replacing it with a more natural form of humor. Essentially, balance out comedy with action, and rely less of exaggerated expressions.

Remove Ash and Pikachu as main characters. They would still appear, but only toward the middle-end saga or after the League, mimicking Red in the Sun/Moon games.

Have the new hero team up with Lillie and Hau, while the other characters will be temporary fourth members, in a way similar to characters like Todd Snap and Korrina.

Totem Challenges would work a bit differently: the challenger would be allowed to bring with him/her only one Pokémon and would have to go through the challenge with that Pokémon alone, using its help to get past the "puzzles" and fight the Totem Pokémon and all its allies alone. Poké Ride Pokémon are allowed, but can't fight during the Totem Battles.

Have the events in Melemele only last 15 episodes at most and move on onto the newer islands quicker.

Add

Have Iris participate in more battles and have a more concrete way to achieve her goal.
Ash becomes Kalos Champion.

I would fire whoever had the idea for movie 20 and I'd force them to watch BW 300 times and play Mystery Dungeon with a Sunkern who can't level up.

Misty would appear at least 5 times per series.
More on Ash and Pikachu's past. Like, who are Pikachu's parents, and why Ash choose to be a Pokemon Master.

Edited to show I'm joking. I'm not.

In BW I'd have Ash keep his battling skills from DP but keep his current personality in that series. I'd also make N the main and antagonistic rival from the beginning with Iris as sort of a friendly rival but she keeps her personality and her you're such a kid catchphrase. Hilda and Cilan would be the companions with Hilda having some battling side quest as a goal. The plot of the series would follow the Team Plasma storyline from B1W1. Team Rocket would be disbanded permanently after Operation Tempest fails.

For XY amourshipping wouldn't exist at all and Serena would become a sky battler by episode 20, and her starter Pokemon would be Fletching and not Fennekin. Her personality would be similar to mirror Serena and she would get a full team. She would also finish all of her battles, either win or lose, without any interruptions or call offs. Ash would keep his personality from BW. Bonnie wouldn't travel with the group. Clemont would do more with his inventions. Serena would be the one that bonds with the Zygarde core. Team Rocket wouldn't exist in this series.

I would revert Ash's personality back to the way it was during OS, AG, and the beginning of DP. I can appreciate his positivity and optimism, but that tends to become overpowering. I think he needs that bit of sass, arrogance, and stubbornness back that's been missing for quite a few years. I think it would help make Ash a much more dynamic character.

I'd also have him recall his other Pokémon more often...and not just Charizard. I think it'd be cool to see Ash with a constantly rotating team made up of previously caught Pokémon, especially the ones we don't see very often or who didn't get a lot of focus in the first place.

I also like the idea of a more character focused approach. I would definitely give the characters more backstory, more involved arcs, deeper personality traits, etc. Just some examples: I'd go deeper into Ash's family history and what really motivates him to want to become a Pokémon Master, more information about Misty's family history and why it's just her and her sisters running the gym, pretty much an entire rundown on Tracey (where did he originally come from, where's his family, what inspired him to become a Pokémon Watcher, etc), May's childhood and particularly her relationship with Norman (it's referenced to be somewhat tense in the beginning but that was dropped pretty quickly), Dawn's admiration for her mother as top coordinator in her youth, more on Iris' background, and eliminating Serena's crush on Ash in order to give her more individual character development as well as a more well-rounded personality.

I would rid off all main characters except Satoshi and Lilie, make Gladio a main character, and make it a travel/adventure based show. I also would add random and unnecessary references to the past seasons and characters, just for fun. I also would retcon some stuff.

So basically the same old formulaic show that we had for the past 20 years. How exciting!!1!

Right now in Sun and Moon, I'd do a few things
-Revert back to the art style that XY had.
-Make the humor more character based, not slapstick and over the top facial expression based.
-Have Ash travel with Hau and Lillie
-Return to traveling the islands rather than sticking to one location
-Have more battles

This is a pretty vague question if you think about it. Are you saying if I took over the show today, or had control since the beginning, or at some point in the series, or are you talking about being in control of the dub side of things? I'll try to answer each of these based on the possibilities

If in charge since Kanto
- Instead of loosing the Pokemon league, Ash wins with the final opponent being Gary
- The final match of Ash vs Gary plays out similar to the one we got in Johto, only with Ash's team being the one he had then, Charizard vs Blastoise would still be the final match
- Ash goes on to face Elite 4, while Gary is asked to become the gym leader of Viridian Gym as the runner up
- Ash beats the Elite 4, hooks up with Misty (you're welcome shippers), and then goes to Mt. Silver (alone) to wait for his successor. The End

If in charge of the show starting now
- Ash's team (except for Pikachu of course) all reach their final evolutions, and each of them proves to be a badass on their own
- Ash finally wins the Pokemon league for a change
- After beating the league, Ash has his first battle with their Elite 4 member, but loses
- Ash goes to whatever the next generations location is, and this time beats at least 1 Elite 4 member before losing to show improvement
- Eventually Ash beats the 4 trainers of the Elite 4, and we get a new series with a new protagonist instead of Ash

If in charge of the English dub

- No more rewrites
- Original Soundtrack kept
- Opening and ending songs receive English translations instead of being replaced with garbage
- Other standard things everyone else does with their dubs

Hope that covers everything

Oh I would change, a lot.
  • The main character would be replaced after each region. Ash can be for Kanto and Jimmy (since he exists) would be Johto. Side characters for those two would remain the same. Brock would get Bulbasaur and Misty would get Squirtle, leaving Ash with only Charmander as his Kanto starter. To change things up, May and Dawn would take center stage in their respective region with the males being the side characters. Max (since I like him as a character) would also join May. Dawn's personality would be a lot less annoying. Hilbert (with just Hilda as a companion) would star in Unova , Serena (Clemont and Bonnie would join her and Calem.) in Kalos, and Elio (with Selene, Lillie, and Hau) in Alola. PC based Characters in Kalos and Alola would show off the customization feature and change their clothes, hair style/color, and eye color every 20 episodes or so.
  • Nearly all characters would succeed at their goals, even beating the E4. Only exception is Dawn who would still lose to Zoey at the Grand Festival.
  • All main characters would nickname their Pokemon. Each main character would have a complete team of 6 and only 6; no rotating.
  • All Pokemon would fully evolve, even Pikachu. He'd evolve at the Indigo League.
  • There would be no evil team stalking the main characters ever. They'd have the same role as they did in the games and nothing more.
  • No previous main character would ever show up again in future series. Professors and the like are fine.
  • Pokemon would have animal-like cries rather than saying their name.
  • Series would follow game plots much closer.
  • Movies would be cannon.
If I think of more I'll add it later, but these are the big things.
