Official Pokémon Sword and Shield speculation thread (Updated June 5th, 2019)

The good news about the Wild Area is negated by Dynamax as far as I'm concerned. Not to mention that it's going to make the other areas look unsatisfying, so it's a double-edged sword (and shield). Better luck in Generation IX?

Everything else is standard fare. While constant pessimism isn't wise, it's always best not to be too excited by trailers, either.

Keep in mind that given some footage in the trailer, the Wild Area actually extend beyond the vast plain area in the south, right before the first big city. There’s footage of a Wild Area moment that seems to be taken from the brown-reddish land with dead trees in the map, as well as others.

I do get your point, though the fact that Pokémon are present in standard routes as well should alleviate some of the disparity between the two type of areas.

Oh damn, playable? Didn't call that one.

Yeah, I'm really curious about what they're gonna do for that- my guess is that they'll have the trainer confined in the Wild Area and then let you run around and possibly do the Max Raids thing. I'm expecting mostly old Pokemon and the ones we saw in the trailer, but who knows, maybe we'll see some more new ones?

I'm hoping the Treehouse demo will be like the one for Sun and Moon though, and that we'll get to see the early route Pokemon and a little bit of the story- maybe find out if its got voice acting or not. I'm not really a big voice acting in Pokemon proponent, but as long as they keep some form of subtitles or text onscreen for people with hearing impairment or who are playing with the sound off, I'm fine with it.

That's not thought policing, that's expressing an opinion on the thing you said. They're not the police, nobody can actually stop you if you want to keep saying Gamefreak is running out of ideas. They can try to convince you, as they are doing, and they can complain about it, but like, until the mods come in here and tell you to stop (which I do think would be a bit much, even if I don't agree with you about this), you're not being silenced.
Don't call it thought police, then: call it what you want. The point is, it's rude either way.

Telling someone that "Game Freak are running out of ideas" is not a valid opinion, is disrespectful.

As a general rule of thumb, I would suggest people to just let others say what they want, instead of telling them "your opinion isn't valid because I find it lazy".

Edit: oh, and by the way, if mods did intervene, it would probably be to ask you guys to stop telling others which opinions are valid and which aren't. They wouldn't ask me to stop, because I'm not the one telling others their opinions aren't valid.

All of which is subjective, though. My own response to the first SS trailer was pretty disappointed - people shouldn't necessarily have to be positive or grateful about something they don't like. Meta Boss, for instance, doesn't have to be happy about what they're seeing.

But on the flipside, I think that saying something like "they're running out of ideas" is just a really banal, thoughtless, unconstructive way of expressing that negativity. (Obviously no one is obligated to listen to me when I say that, it's just that from where I'm sitting, trite worn-out jabs are really boring and I'd rather read opinions, be they positive or negative, that actually have interesting things to say.)

And like Silktree said, trailers are designed to cut out the flaws, so one should be wary even if one is dazzled by the show. There's a lot I like about the new trailer, but I need more information before I can get fully invested. Like with Max Raids - they'll be a lot less appealing to me if it's not something that a nearby player can hop in on with another Joy-Con. If it requires another Switch, then that removes the possibility of my partner and I doing them together, and with that would go a lot of my interest in the feature. But I still like what was shown of it; I like the idea in broad terms.
On Max Raids at least, they officially confirmed that if you don't have anyone locally or NSO, AIs can fill up the slots instead. But yeah, I can understand being disappointed even if I personally wasn't. Dynamaxing seems lazy because it's just a temporary mixture of Megas and Z-Moves with no form change (unless the Gigantamaxing thing is real). I'm still very excited either way, cause the Wild Area seems like a much bigger leap than I was expecting GF to make, and if nothing else provides a great stepping stone for region design later on, but I get that it might not be enough for others.

But my partner is more fun to play with than both AIs and Internet randos :(

Based Let's Go lets us play with just Joy-Cons...

I'm conflicted on how they will handle the legendaries if the printer color idea is true, on one hand, I would be happy that the first and second versions legendaries would finally be able to fuse with each other but on the other, I don't want the third legendary fusing with the first two again because that would take even more uniqueness away from Kyurem much like what Necrozma did.

Hello there. I see were having the whole "game freak is/isn't out of ideas" argument again. And people are even throwing around the term "thought-police." What is this, 1984?

I also see we're curious about the player character's names. I'm going with Sora and Shiela until further notice or I come up with better fanon names.

Outlandish theory tiiiiime:
We've established that Zacian and Zamazenta's names are corruptions of the colors cyan and magenta respectively, leaving out yellow and black from the CMYK color model. And we've seen that that prominent city entrance is shaped like a dragon's head, painted yellow and black. BUT, but, but, the way you get black in CMYK is by mixing CMY. SO, what if we're getting another Original Dragon trio situation? A yellow something that carries a cyan sword and a magenta shield, which combine into a black dragon? Picture Omnimon. Both Zacian and Zamazenta, while absolutely graceful and regal and literally perfect in every way, seem less imposing than all the previous legendaries we've had. Not quite legendary tier, not quite mythical tier either. But what if that's on purpose? What if something bigger is coming? WHAT IF Galar created the ultimate warrior to fight against the ultimate weapon? Or the other way around - what if AZ had to create a humongous weapon to fight off a humongous warrior? ORRRRR what if Z&Z split willingly because they were sick of having to slaughter the other side? And they were banned as a consequence, explaining why they're even unknown to the people of Galar like the website claims.

where're my 45-minute-long pokétuber video ad revenue

Speaking of pokétubers, something that might be noteworthy: I've stumbled on Shofu's video about the leak and he claims to know that we're for sure getting regional variants. Is he credible? I know he's a very famous pokétuber but I've never followed him.

That's because we finally see a game that Game Freak does so much of it right
That's totally subjective.
which they did a really great job with it.
That's totally subjective.
it just makes you sound like spoiled and ungrateful when they worked their butts off in trying to make it a good first traditional game on the Switch
it's non of your business if someone is ungrateful to GF in your opinion. Let everyone feel the way they do.

Funny that some people think GF is running out of ideas. My problem has been they have had too many ideas during the years and get rid of most of them with each gen to bring new stuff. I mean, each gen has tons of new stuff and I would like a game that brings back some of those features without being forced to play that particular gen to use that particular feature.
For what I know, Pokemon can stop creating new things for 5 years and just reuse and rethink/renew some of the thousands things they've created.

@Meta Boss I don’t really care to continue this argument as it’s really irrelevant and adds nothing to the thread. The only thing I’m going to respond to is that I haven’t broken a single Bulbagarden rule, other than maybe getting slightly off topic here. We’re both just giving our opinions, we aren’t flaming or baiting or anything of the sort. So lets just chill and enjoy the hype for Sword and Shield :)

I'm sorry, little one ;-;

I'm aware of these facts. It seems to be around one third of the total area for wild Pokemon, which while respectable, means that for the most part players will encounter a few Pokemon not doing much with little to see around them. They expect us to keep coming back to the Wild Area for more Pokemon, but that really isn't my thing.

If it requires another Switch, then that removes the possibility of my partner and I doing them together, and with that would go a lot of my interest in the feature.
That's probably the case considering the lack of implication that it also works like in LGPE, and these games were designed around the "handheld experience".

That's my biggest issue with the Switch as a home console/handheld hybrid- I hate the idea that they expect you to get one for every person in your household. My girlfriend has been sharing mine and is against the idea of us getting another one (which, yeah, we're kind of tight on money right now), so we're just gonna have to take turns playing Pokemon instead of being able to play simultaneously and trade/battle with each other. It really bums me out!

I'm hoping I can save up some money and maybe convince her to change her mind, but it also feels silly because we've been doing fine with sharing the one Switch up until now. Buying another Switch just for one game (which we'd also then need to buy two copies of, which is a lot more daunting when its $60 games instead of $40 ones) seems kind of ridiculous. Oh well...

Exactly the problem I'm in, verbatim. Part of me wants to get another because of features like this, but then, we clearly don't need it because one Switch has been sufficient thus far, and an extra $360 is a lot more to drop for something unnecessary.
