Lanturn has the disadvantage of being a fish though and thus being unable to fight on land.

Has something like this ever happened in the anime? Have they even brought something like this up before? Are fish Pokémon really unable to survive out of water?

I mean, I guess that some of them would have a harder time moving on land than others due to their bodies and how they are shape (like Sharpedo or Bruxish), but I don't think that Lanturn would have a problem like that. Based on its design, I'd say that it would probably move like seal, dragging its body on the ground. And besides, if Chinchou can survive and move perfectly fine while on land, then surely its evolution would too.

Not only are they being cruel by not having Surge here, but they're adding insult to injury by making Pieces a Surge knock-off.

The sad part is that it looks like an otherwise great episode...o_O

In the last 5 seconds of the PV, we can see that Ash was utilizing Pikachu's Iron Tail to tank Raichu's Volt Tackle.
I think he is fully prepared to handle that Raichu and won't have any problems with the first battle.

Yeah, I don't think they're doing the "Pikachu is badly over matched" thing again; I believe Pikachu just wins normally and maybe Gou or Pisces will express shock but that's about it.

Plus this is a two on two so they need to give Gengar vs Electrode battle time, too.

Nice to see Volt Tackle. Still don't know why they had Pikachu forget his line's signature move instead of losing Quick Attack.

Maybe because it's a bit too similar to Quick Attack and has the added negative of the recoil damage, and they can't/won't replace QA because it's his go-to move for speeding off like a bullet.

Personally, I prefer Electroweb as the 4th move because of how it can be utilized in many ways (shield, trampoline, attack etc.).

Holy hell, I just noticed the stick-tail-in-ground in the sponsor segments, this is pretty much the same way Pikachu tanked Raichu's thunderous attacks last time. Makes it even more baffling that Surge was removed when the Pikachu vs. Raichu is looking up to be a clone of the original, what are they even trying to do?

I do like Electroweb, it has great utility and can be used a lot more creatively than when he was running Electro Ball, but I think Volt Tackle worked well as a last ditch desperation attack.

I'll actually be pleased with it if they directly reference his battle with Surge somehow, but I'm not sure if that'll happen at this point.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually prefer Electroweb over Volt Tackle.

With Tomioka writing the episode, it's very likely to be referenced.

Great, Pisces really is a Lt. Surge knockoff

The episode looks great, and the battle looks interesting. It's really too bad they had to go down the route of "fill in gym leader" featuring "the exact same Pokemon as said gym leader". It's personality even seems similar.

Yet another episode with tempered expectations.

Chinchou has feet though. And yes, fish Pokemon have been shown in most cases to be incapable of surviving or battling outside of water. All Misty's Goldeen could do is flop around useless only on land. That's why the main characters never catch them; fish Pokemon are completely useless and immobile on land.

This preview looks lit and reminds me of the days when most of us would be eager to see Ash's next Gym Battle. I'm really looking forward to next week's animation, music, and Gengar action.

While I understand the events of what happened today, it does still feel strange Raboot wouldn't want to witness this fight; I know Pokemon can change in personality after evolving, but you'd think it'd still at least want to watch Ash.

Raboot: Like, battles are lame man. It's all pointless in the grand scheme man.

Meanwhile, Juan's Goldeen, Seaking and even Luvdisc (which I never would've even expected to be able stand on the ground, given its design) were shown to be perfectly capable of not only standing on platforms, but also using moves while they're out of water. And there was also that time when Misty's Luvdisc escaped from Cassidy and Buck by hopping away from them on land.

Huh. Seems to me like they aren't really that consistent with this supposed "fish Pokémon can't survive/do anything while they're on land" rule (and, thus, it's not the best excuse for them not giving Pisces a Lanturn).

Is Pisces a guy or a girl? These people of Vermillion (Go and Pisces) with their eyelashes makes it confusing for me.

Well Pisces has more muscles than most other characters that we've seen and abs that you could grate cheese on, so I'm guessing they're male? Then again you just never know these days.
