First off, thank you writers for making it seem like the battles are at least 2v2. That does beg the question, if it is 2v2, then Ash’s Pokemon would have one battle each, if there’s three battles. With Pikachu fighting Steven, it’s bizarre that Pikachu would be on the sidelines for the rest of the tournament, and even more so knowing that he wouldn’t at least have a contribution in the final against Leon.

Secondly, if Rilaboom Gigantamaxes against Alain, then it would mean his Charizard will fight Mega-Charizard X in its base form. That’s one way of making sure yours is the strongest.

And this is surely a coincidence, but I wonder if Alain has a Chesnaught because of Mairin’s influence, or that geniuenly is her Chespin evolved. I could see her give Alain Chespin to train it and make it stronger, but that still seems dumb.

Ash and Iris going in so cheerily and getting instantly dunked on by the older members’ stoic attitudes made me chuckle a bit, figured that they would be the odd ones out in this midst.

Chesnaught and Rillaboom battling… holy shit, that’s a good way to make up for their lack of importance. Now all we need is a Typhlosion and a Decidueye to redeem their species.

The battles are 3 on 3. I don't know where you're getting 2 on 2 from.

I think DIantha and Cynthia appreciate their goofiness. Honestly I think only Lance is super serious, Steven didn't seem so bothered.

I said “at least” and “if”? And I haven’t been well lately to read everything posted, so if there’s confirmation of it being 3v3, I would genuinely like to see it.

They confirmed it multiple times and all the trainers are using 3 pokemon

The story of Alain in JN:
Bring back anime original character to generate hype!
Ash has never beaten him!
He will not battle Ash...
Ends up defeated in an episode not entirely dedicated to his battle...
Leaves, never to be seen again...
To be fair he might stick around to cheer Ash on or something.

But even if not...is any part of this really surprising? JN has spent a lot of time pulling random swerves, like the preview moving around dialogue to make it look like Ash was getting Sobble.

My copeium is Alan sticks around and Ash battles him in a 1 on 1 as training for Leon. Bonus if Greninja returns.

The Paul battle shows how even a battle not being an official match can still be good. So I hope Alan gets the same

I shouldn't be surprised. I know I don't like JN's direction. Yet, I still had a modicum of hope the Masters 8 would salvage some part of this dismal series, for me.

But man, they couldn't even give Ash a decent round 1 opponent (not necessarily Alain).

Steven isn't a bad first choice, just random. I do think Alan will stick around
