I went through Diamond using almost only my Gastrodon, Luxray, and Honchkrow. A friend of mine went through I think it was emerald, with only 2 Pokémon, Gardevoir and Blazekin. The games actually seem easier if you use fewer Pokémon, because they grow much more quickly.

The justification I can think of for Psychic>poison is that the poison pokémon must have some kind of poison-making glands, so a telekinetic attack could upset that and put the poison into the rest of the pokémon's body. Bug>dark never made sense to me, though.
