From Anime on DVD

"Bandai Entertainment on Gurren Lagann (05:37 PM EDT): Gurren Lagann from Bandai Entertainment is apparently going to get an unusual release from the company as they're going to rush it out the door starting in July - subtitled only. A dubbed version will be released starting in the first quarter of 2009. But in 2008, releases of the entire series will come out in July, August and September, presumably in the same kind of double disc sets mentioned for other new titles."

I guess this is more of Bandai's repeated attempts to sway people away from fansubs. Grant it, I had been wanting to buy the DVD's since the show first aired and I was going to watch it subtitled. I don't know, this could work for some people but it still sucks for people who prefer dubs.

I think the reason its being released sub only is that ADV originally had the license but something clearly went wrong and ADV lost the license. Thus, Bandai brought the license, how who knows. Regardless, they would be stupid no not speed up the release as the problems with ADV and Gurren Laagan caused much disruption and concern. Thus its simply easier for the anime to be released as soon as and subs are therefore, the best way to go. This is an anime that will likely to be popular with the sub-fans crowd. As such a release like this will work.

I'm pretty sure the ADV disaster had to do with Sojitz, a company who invested in ADV, jumping ship. They probably were providing ADV with the funds to pay off the GL royalties... and when they left, so did the license.

This is big news for Bandai, paired with the Gundam 00 license, they will def. be getting some income now. ... assuming people buy it and don't pirate :/

I guess the higher profile stuff comes at the expense of the obscure: Bandai had licensed Shigofumi, sola and true tears for late spring/early summer releases, and now, all are delayed. I'd been waiting for the first, too..... >_>

In all fairness, Bandai Visual is kinda putting a nail in their foot with their pricing.

Just a reminder that Bandai Entertainment and Bandai Visual while both technically owned by the same company are different units all together.

Bandai Entertainment is largely an American licensor and distributor of anime and manga.

While Bandai Visual is basically a company in Japan releasing series with great video quality and booklets and the like but these contain sometimes one, two, maybe max three episodes and are subbed only. Basically it releases stuff like it would in Japan only to Americas.

Yeah probably something like that. ADV really does have a serious PR problem. Back when they licensed a bunch of manga and then ran into problems. They wouldn't say anything. Back in 20042005 when they had anime issues. They didn't say much. And now with the problems they have had in 2008. They are so secretive about it. ADV really can be frustrating sometimes.

I was really looking forward to the ADV dub for this, and I hate Bandai, so Gainax just lost me as a customer. Why should I buy a sub-only track? I already have the subs right here.

If I wanted to support Gainax, it would be better to personally give $50 to Hiroyuki Yamaga for the DVD's worth at Fanime and tell him I'll never buy anime again if he goes with Bandai.

... at roughly the same price as the R2 release. 49.99 for two episodes won't fly in North America, no matter how much glitz Bandai Visual gives it.

I nearly laughed myself to death when I saw the Galaxy Angel Rune DVDs going at that price.
