EV - How's it work?

So, having fallen off the addiction that is WoW, my need to collect and grind threw me back into Pokemon after a fair few years (I believe my old GBA and Pokemon Gold is still somewhere in a box in my basement). Together with a friend from uni, we bought Black and White versions to enable our Pokedexes to get all the exclusives. Now we jsut need someone with cloned event pokemon etc >.>

Anyways, back on topic:

I like taking any game I play to the max. Why be mediocre when you can put in a little extra work and be awesome, right? Into this comes the idea of EV's.

Now, I've read the bulbapedia article on them etc, but it seems like there's a little too uch algorithmic information and not enough "how to". So, I'm hoping people ehre can help me out a little:

Assuming I want to min/max my team, and I don't find a pokemon with the nature I want, I can always breed it and get egg-moves+the right IV base if I just keep going. However, with EVs (if I've udnerstood it correctly), I need to either rest my base EV's with a berry that I cannot obtain until Dreamworl is implemented for the English games?

And how does it work once I can reset them? Simply go into the wild and battle only pokemon with the EV sets I want and flee from the rest? Perhaps increase gains with a Battle Subway hold-item? Is this "all" ther eis to it, or is it more complicated than that? (Assuming here I want to, for example, breed my Zekrom for normal attack, defense and special defense only, would I then just need to reset the other stats to 100 with the berries, then find pokemon that increase those stats specifically when fought?)

Hope you folks can help me out!

(And if anyone has any of the event pokemon cloned they'd trade for some B/W breedables, I'd gladly get you what you wanted!)

Thank you. So it will always be (at least) one IV from one of the parents that transfer down? I mean, could it be that none of the IVs are passed down? So if I got two parents that have 31 IVs in each stat; the offspring will get 31 IVs in at least one stat?

In that case, breeding a Pokémon with 31 IVs in each stat is very difficult? If you're not RNGing or cheating in another way, right?

I've RNGed shinies before, any of you that RNG IVs, is it harder/easier than RNGing shinies, or the same, in your option?

I've never been able to produce a child with more than three 31s though, to be fair, most of those were in the random stats. I can't be 100% certain if you will definitely get an iv without a power item since I have been doing the vast majority of my breeding using a power item to pass things on so I only know that it's guaranteed that way.

As for rng abuse, I've never quite understood how to do that with stats but I can do it for shinies. So in my opinion it is harder but I have seen other people either agreeing or disagreeing with me on that subject.

It doesn't matter. However, if you're breeding with a Pokémon from a different language, it will not work. I suppose you're breeding for natures passing down?

I haven't heard any official word on this so it could be a massive coincidence but I'm wondering if this has changed in gen 5. I put an everstone on my adamant Japanese ditto just to see it and has been producing an awful lot of adamant babies.

What gives? I slathered a honey tree in Diamond just last night at 8, and it's only 7 in the morning right now. I've read that the effects of honey last 24 hours, but now it seems that the honey I slathered is gone. It doesn't even say that the tree in question is slathered with it.

How come both the player's guide and Bulbapedia specified it as 24 hours when it's clearly less than that?

I'm using Platinum so power items won't work. Hm, I see.

That's what bulbapedia said for all gen IV games at least, so I'm not sure about gen V.

Assuming I want to min/max my team, and I don't find a pokemon with the nature I want, I can always breed it and get egg-moves+the right IV base if I just keep going.

If you want to breed to get a specific nature, if you have a parent that have the nature you want; you could give it an everstone. Just a little tip.

However, with EVs (if I've udnerstood it correctly), I need to either rest my base EV's with a berry that I cannot obtain until Dreamworl is implemented for the English games?

That's how I understand it too, but I'm not completely sure. I don't understand dream world at all but after reading some at bulbapedia, it seems like we can get the berries from there.

And how does it work once I can reset them? Simply go into the wild and battle only pokemon with the EV sets I want and flee from the rest? Perhaps increase gains with a Battle Subway hold-item? Is this "all" ther eis to it, or is it more complicated than that?

You know how to reset EVs correctly? I've not done EVs in Gen V but bulbapedia says it's pretty much the same, only that you get your EVs after battle instead of leveling up.

That's simply how you do it. I would recommend to go to a place there all the Pokémon (or the majority) gives you the right EV. Or battle a trainer who's Pokémon all give a specific EV. Having pokérus and a EV-enchancing item will help you out a lot and I recommend you getting these as well.

I use to do it this way:
Infect the Pokémon you want to EV train with Pokérus, give it a EV-enchancing item, place it first in your party. When the battle start, if it is to weak to battle for itself, switch to a higher level Pokémon and then let it kill the Pokémon for you. And since Gen V, I think all Pokémon that are in the battle will get EVs, except if they aren't already maxed (?).

(Assuming here I want to, for example, breed my Zekrom for normal attack, defense and special defense only, would I then just need to reset the other stats to 100 with the berries, then find pokemon that increase those stats specifically when fought?)

You'll need to reset the EVs to zero. To be perfectly sure your EVs are gone, you'll have to give 11 EV berries for each stat you don't want EVs in. The first berry one will reduce the EVs to 100, then each berry will reduce the EVs with 10.

Then it's pretty much just getting the EVs again.

According to Bulbapedia, the berries will only reset down to a base EV of 100 for each stat? If this is, indeed, the case, then I could certainly do this once I get platinum (still working on all catchables in White before buying the older game) for gen IV critters, but Zekrom's Gen V so I guess he's harder to minmax :/

If you have EVs over 100, lets say 120. The first EV berry you use on your Pokémon will get the EVs to 100. Then you'll have to use another 10 berries to get it down to zero.

From bulbapedia:
"In Pokémon Emerald, certain Berries that were previously only used to make Pokéblocks can decrease certain effort values by 10 effort points, while increasing the happiness of the Pokémon they were used on."

"Most of the Generation IV EV system remains unchanged from Generation III, however, EV-reducing berries will reduce Effort Points to 100 if the current Effort Points for the stat were above 100."

Bulbapedia also says that there isn't a big different between EVs in Gen IV and Gen V so it works pretty much the same when you reducing them. As soon as you get the EV berries in Gen V, it'll be as it was in Gen IV I suppose.

What does it mean to "minmax"?

Minmax'ing is an old RPG term. It means that you have a set amount of points to sue on stats (think Dungeons and Dragons or the likes), just like with EV's. You then minimize the number of points in undesired stats and maximize the amount in desired stats.

So let's say EV's can total 256 points. You have Zekrom and want him with some awesome Special moves. You want him to be able to tank opponents using attacks based on the normal Attack stats, so you reset all the other stats to 0 (the minimizing part) except HP, Defense and Special Attack which you then maximize. The idea is to tune your character/pokemon/whatever to be tailored for certain scenarios in which it will then excel and not waste any value on useless stats which are undesirable for your current plans.

Another example would be Wolrd of warcraft, playing a ferral druid. You want to get 7% hit, 5-6.5% expertise and the rest in crit/mastery stats. So you reforge,m enchant and gem your gear to remove as many of those stats as possible, grab gear that suits your strategy and maximize the desired stats.

TL;DR: MinMaxing consists of minimizing the amount of undesirable stats and maximizing the desirable ones.

With abilities which boost stats with status problems, will the stat go up with all status ailments

Like if a pokemon with guts is asleep and uses snore, will it be any stronger?
Guts increases the Attack stat by 50% when the Pokemon it inflicted with Burn, Paralysis, or Poison.

I read on Smogon that the Everstone now works when breeding foreign Pokemon.

Sorry, I'm no gamer really (I have played WoW however). But I understand what you mean now. =)

Hm, you know there are a total of 510 EVs, right? And you can only put in 255 as a maximum at stat. If you haven't battle with your Zekrom however, the EVs will be zero.

510 then, with 255 pr stat. The above was more of an example, the point is jsut to do the very ebst possible within whatever limits are set ebfore you. And my poor Zekrom is currently overworked and udnerpaid. I really wish I could find more decent TM's for him :/

Yeah I thought so but I just want you to get it right. I'm sure there is some EV-guides around on internet or on this fourm. =)

Overworked and underpaid? Hahaha! What were you looking for then? Zekrom seem to have a quite nice move pool, for being dragon/electric.

Desperate

Fellow Bulbagardeners,
I have (had) an amazing Diamond game card and recently I lost it. Probably for good as we all know just how small DS games are. However I copied my boxes and party into pokémon battle revolution. Is there any way, legitimate or otherwise, to gain all the pokémon in those boxes short of finding my Diamond game card?

Since Battle Revolution only allows the game that deposited a Pokemon to withdraw it, I believe the only other way to get your Pokemon back (aside from finding the original game) would be to buy a new (or used) Diamond cartridge and dump its save to a file on your computer. From there, you could use a program like Pokesav to modify the save so the trainer name, gender, ID and secret ID exactly match those of your original Diamond. Once you'd uploaded the modified save to your cartridge (there are 3rd party peripherals that can do this), that would probably be enough to fool Battle Revolution into thinking it was the original game.

Uh, hi all...

I apologize if I'm in the wrong place for this, but I might not be.. oh dear...

So, I have an EV-related question. I have just recently (like, 'in the last few days' recently) started to realize how handy EV stat-training is (or whatever you experienced people call it XD). Now, in my White game, I've been training my Pokemon, getting ready for the Elite Four and all that, but I notice that no matter what I fight, nor how many times I do it, my starter (who is now a Lvl 59 Samurott) gains NO EV bonuses whatsoever. O_O All of my other Pokemon gain them just fine, as they're supposed to. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone have an idea of what might be going on? Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. *bows*

Your starter probably has already reached the EV cap of 510 points. Remember that you gain EV points from very battle your pokemon has fought in. Since your Samurott is level 59 it probably got the 510 a while ago. You can test this by going to the EV checker.

Can someone explain how Hidden abilities are passed down please? (side question: will the pokemon that has the ability passed down have a certain gender, always male/female?)

and also more of an opinionated question: Which eeveelution would be the best/rarest to get with that Pokemon Online "promotion"? I've just set Espeon so it's too late for me. Hope I didn't make a "wrong choice":look:
