I still think that the Moon legendary is going to be some sort of rabbit, and I'm hoping the Sun legendary is a shisa. I wouldn't object to Zygarde being the Legendary on both boxes, though.

First of all, now that I think about it. CoroCoro blank box cover is an evil version of the ink blot test, lol. To test fan's patient.
About legendaries, I think that GameFreak doesn't take from any myth. They rather say, this is the theme of this gen, let's come up with some thing and they take a little bit from here and there to create the legendaries.
For Zygarde, I still think it's most resemble Ananta, the Hindu Naga king most because of serpent theme (bar 10% forme). Ananta was said to have dug deep into the earth and supported it. It also supported all the planets on each of its hoods 》balance

It's been suggested before that Zygarde Complete Forme is supposedly "based on" Hel from Norse mythology... The idea confuses and infuriates me. Hel is described as the female ruler of the equivalent of the underworld, who herself is described as resembling a rotting corpse. Zygarde Complete Forme looks nothing like that in any shape or form. I honestly believe it's just people grasping for straws in an attempt to connect the XY trio to Norse mythology. I was never sold on the idea that Yveltal is the eagle and Xerneas one of the deer. That's my thoughts on it at least.

Though I do kind of like that earlier idea of the S/M mascots being based on the wargs Skoll and Hati, if only because it's a lot more plausible.

Apparently next month would have a huge scoop on Sun and Moon. I don't buy that for a second. Mascots maybe but nothing major.

One intriguing possibility with Python for Zygarde is the connection with Typhon. Some legends have the two confused (authors giving Typhon as the name of the guardian serpents). Others have Typhon being raised by Python. One way or another, the link between these two is there.

What's interesting about this is that Typhon is depicted as a bipedal giant whose children are snakes (Hydra) and dogs (Cerberus). Add in that the crown-like thing on 50% Zygarde most certainly recall the multiple heads of the Hydra, and that while Cerberus is best known in his many-headed form, there are many representations of a one-headed Cerberus around.

Like I said. It's certainly an intriguing possibility.

If you look in the upper-right corner, you'll see that Nintendo Network compatibility is confirmed.

There is clearly visible darkened part almost resembling a silhouette - something that looks like a foot below the title and a shape at the end, some sort of curvy line that could be a tail or whatever. Granted, there's no way of confirming what this is, but I don't think that NOTHING can be seen here.

In any case, I could imagine some sort of a beast as a mascot, perhaps a wolf or a manticore.

That Sun mascot really looks like a Lion or Tiger and I have no clue on what the Moon one is supposed to be.

When CoroCoro promised "earth shaking" news, they revealed Magearna, the first Gen VII Pokemon.

I can see why people are loathe to trust the magazine after this "incident" but when CoroCoro promise, they're good for their word and usually deliver something great.

So a friend showed me this version of the scan, it's been messed around it but now I can actually see sth resembling a pointy tail. The Pokemon is also quadrupedal..

It might just be my imagination, but I've zoomed in to about 200% and Moon's cover seems to be some sort of humanoid? I can also see what appears to be its head just under the black text.

Can you see it now? I circled the shadowy parts. The part under the title itself seems like a foot of the Pokemon whereas the circle above the title surrounds some sort of a curved line (tail?)
