Official Pre-Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield Speculation & Leaks thread

One thing that always annoyed me was how linear and straight forward Pokémon games are, I assumed it was only gen 6 and 7 but after replaying all the older generations recently it’s always been there. There’s only 1-2 possible paths to take, NPCs tell you what to do if a sign doesn’t, the map gives you all the possible directions to follow so you can’t get lost and there’s little incentive to actually explore and take detours unless you want that one rare TM / item.

Would be nice to see exploration like hoenn and sinnoh gave us and a reason to explore.

Just a thought I had the other day (but never got around to mentioning it)...

With Yokai Watch being more popular in Japan, This whole “Lets Go Pikachu And Lets Go Eevee” Thing could be just what Pokémon needs right now. And while to the west it might seem like an odd title and they may not like it, I believe it will be super popular in Japan which could be a good thing.

yes it is, if they change the battle system a ton of people would not buy the game because of it.
Many people will buy the games regardless of some not liking some things it can be said for a bunch of series which as long as it makes lots of money that's all that matters.

I agree. I think it's funny sometimes that a lot of the fan community demands that Pokemon games be different, and then when it looks like it's happening, people flip out. Not that change is always good, but Gamefreak should be allowed to experiment, encouraged even. Given the subject matter, I don't think there's any way this game does bad.

I don't think that's the case ever since Pokemon GO came out.
Yokai Watch's first season was massive, but then they decided to do some USA monsters, so the Japanese kids stopped liking it.

Yo kai watch hasn’t been more popular since 2015.

Sun and moon destroyed yk3 sales in 2016.

USUM destroyed busters 2

Sun and moon anime has beaten yo kai watch too

Yo kai watch hAve tried to become mature game with new movie

It isn’t.

It may not be at this current moment, but it's definitely a threat to other franchises like it. Sun and Moon definitely tried to appeal to a similar demographic, with Rotomdex.

Definitely true; it's currently not what it was. But they do seem to have gleaned some ideas from it.

My main concern is whether or not the games are sequels. Judging from the leakers' wording, they are definitely not faithful remakes like FRLG, but I certainly hope that they aren't akin to ORAS/USUM (games that oversell the story differences). I can't wrap my head around turning Red (who represents Satoshi Tajiri) into an NPC in a spin on his own story.

It is more popular in Japan than it is in the West. Not necessarily more popular than Pokémon but there was a Yokai Watch popularity burst for a time.

I was just saying maybe they are trying to do the opposite. They made it more accessible for the West in 2013 with X/Y and they continued. Then there was the rise in Yokai Watch’s popularity specificly In Japan. I am just trying to say that while the direction they are going may seem odd to those in the West. I believe it will be a huge hit in Japan.

And now it’s coming to the Switch And Pokemon has yet to make its move yet. While the popularity burst in Japan may not be what it was, it still has the potential to rise again. All I was trying to say is that the direction they are taking, while it may seem odd to the West, I believe will be super popular in Japan like Yokai Watch once was.

The Yokai Watch reboot isn't off to a promising start judging from the latest movie's box office and first few anime episodes' ratings.

I am not sure why LGPE would be more popular in Japan than the rest of the world. Because Japan likes cute mascots?

I don't understand why people say the battle system will be like pokemon go, why would they do that? All these beliefs are based on nothing

I wouldn’t say that the beliefs are based on 'nothing'. While I myself don’t believe we're going to get a GO-esque battle system, I can understand why some fear it.

Ever since the games were announced, we've been hearing rumours of a changed and 'simplified' battle system. Then come game titles with 'GO' in them. Pokemon GO is also known for its simplified battle system. We also now have rumours of 'Go integration' too.

These facts combined may make people fear that we're getting a GO-like battle system.

Neither do I, as nothing credible has pointed to that. I think the Pokemon catching (the actual act of catching) makes sense to work like Go. It would actually make catching Pokemon challenging again, which has long been a complaint from a vocal majority, so I'm not sure why that should be an issue.

We have heard prior to this, from the Chinese Riddler and that group, that the fighting was going to be changed up, but not to something like Go. I think people are just getting their rumors crossed.

That might be, but I doubt it will influence Game Freak too much. After all, it has been proven that Yōkai Watch and Pokémon can coexist just fine, even with games on the same device. No real drastic changes were made as a reaction to Yōkai Watch when it was booming and now, with Pokémon comfortably on top in Japan and anywhere else in the world, I don't see why they would make them now.
