Official Pokémon Sword and Shield speculation thread (Updated June 5th, 2019)

I love being able to rematch gym leaders and trainers in general. But not when I'm forced to right while I'm in the middle of challenging the Elite Four. And because of Poochyena even? It's really anticlimatic, out of place, and seems like a desperate idea they pulled out of their...well you know where. And if they did that to extend the games' length, then it also gives me concerns that SwSh will be a lot shorter than usual.

This of course assuming that the alleged 'leak' is even true, and I really hope it isn't. Give me optional rematches in the post-end game, not in the middle of the Elite Four...

Since Mobile Games, GF have started focusing their attention on that more than their mainline series, which looks as if, if things don't improve, will make Gen VIII the last Pokemon Gen for the main series.
How do you even jump to these conclusions?!

The only mobile games that Game Freak has developed are Pokemon Quest and Pocket Card Jockey, so they're not... focusing their attention on those, obviously? And I don't know what you mean by "if things don't improve"- things are fine, the main series is still selling well no matter how much fans might bitch about it.

Can we stop it with the "main series is going to end with Gen 8" now? There's no logical reason why it would.

What I suspect, is that if that "leak" is true, the that twist in the plot is to cover for the possibility that there is essentially no post-game content. Aside from raid battles, if we consider that "post-game."

That would be a really dirty trick for Game Freak to pull after the their recent backlash.

So, Pokémon GO! essentially ruined Game Freak’s motivation? As if people didn’t have enough reasons to bash that game…

Mobile gaming is really ruining everything, isn’t it?

Not to say or imply the main series will end with gen 8 (since I doubt that myself) but to be fair, isn't it that Pokémon Go on its own got already more profit than the other main series games combined, or something along those lines?

The point being, if Go is more lucrative than creating a new game every n years, if people literally want dumbed down versions in the shape of mobile games, why not eventually just shift your focus towards something else entirely and just feed the people with what they want, and with what actually earns you more money?

Of course it is. Still salty and blaming mobile gaming that handhelds aren't as much of a thing anymore, I'd still die for a new version of PSVita or something alone those lines, I love that thing.

The Vita was a thing? (I'm half joking here).
Say that to me in person so I can shoot you a death glare while throwing my Vita at you. (Fully joking here)
Not the Vita's fault that the western world never really grew fond of it; the choice of decent games to play isn't that bad at all, and if you include the games never localised and are into anime stuff, it's really a super great handheld. The only real downside are the overpriced SD cards for it tbh...

I've heard once from speculation that if Game Freak became an entirely independent third-party developer (and not one that is closely affiliated with Nintendo), then they would probably go the route of prioritizing mobile and other 'lite' games. Much like the route Square Enix took with their major franchises.

I know people here have said that they would rather Pokemon stay with Game Freak, but everywhere else I've heard people calling that Nintendo should just absorb Pokemon.

On one hand, I of course feel like Game Freak created Pokémon, it's only fair if they keep it.
On the other hand... and this is mere speculation with absolute no base, if Game Freak really was tired of Pokémon (again: not to say they are, it's a big IF and we can't ever for sure know) I'd prefer Nintendo to absorb it and get a shot at "reviving" the series instead of letting it slowly die. Again, not saying that's what Game Freak does, but if you absolutely lose your passion for something and it just becomes a chore you hate, that keeps you from things you'd rather do, the result will necessarily suffer. As a consumer, I'd prefer a franchise I take interest in to not be treated that way.

...again, big if, I swear if anyone reads out of this post that I claim Game Freak is tired of making Pokémon lol

I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who thinks we have more than enough eeveeutions and don't need anymore. But to each their own.

The only eeveeution I'd be happy with is Dragon-type. I really don't think we need one for any of the other types.

-frustrated gargling noises-

Pokemon GO's success is a freak incident. Mobile games aren't guaranteed to make that kind of money and it wouldn't be that easy to just pull another successful mobile game out of their ass to replicate it. If anything, Game Freak has mainly been focusing on making the main series compatible with Pokemon GO, not stealing its thunder. They made one mobile Pokemon game and it's the slow block grind that is Pokemon Quest.

I really don't get this blaming mobile games thing at all. What has mobile gaming actually done to hurt anything? Is everyone just that butthurt that the new Rumble was only released on mobile or something? Because that's the only hit that I see.

I really don't think that they would prioritize mobile. Mobile has considerable power limitations compared even to the 3DS and they were pushing the boundaries on that platform. Their developers would probably get really friggin' sick of being restricted within the tiny smartphone box. And the company isn't without its diversification- Gear Project allows their developers to work on their own ideas for games on any system, even for Nintendo's competitors. They're not a restricted company, they're actually an oddly very liberal one. So I'm pretty sure that if they were a more independent developer, they would just keep making games for every platform instead of just leaning more towards any particular one.

Please please please please pleeeease everyone just read this article that @PocketMonster linked earlier in this thread-
Seriously, it would give you a better understanding of how the company operates.

Wouldn't some of that profit being going to Niantic, though, not Pokemon themselves?

I am aware of Game Freak's other games and their Gear Box initiative. What I said was just parroting what other people have said.

What noises come next if I keep senselessly blame the mobile gaming market? Asking for a friend. Gonna turn binary next and only speak in 0's and 1's?

Not sure, gacha games in general also pull in a decent amount of money. I mean, honestly, I'd get kind of frustrated if something like Pokemon GO is so super successful and when I develop a game and make an unpopular announcement (Dexit - and I'm not meaning to belittle this here) and people start hating nitpicking about everything when everyone seemingly forgot what mess the first few weeks of Pokémon GO were (servers online were more an exception than the standard, it felt like...).

I couldn't really care less about Rumble, but I'm still annoyed at the mobile gaming market because I'll never stop blaming it for killing my beloved handhelds. Switch only counts half-way tbh, although I won't be ungrateful, it still is a handheld. Now if only there were more interesting games for me on it...

Wouldn't some of that profit being going to Niantic, though, not Pokemon themselves?
Sure, and afaik we don't really know any splits so it's hard to say how much Pokémon/Game Freak/Nintendo specifically make off every game, I guess.

Man I feel like there's just a lot of scapegoating random things to pin the blame on for why people are dissatisfied and none of them really make sense.
I personally blame all the small things equally and summed up it starts to make more sense. xD
Then again, if you go by such logic, you can never blame anyone for anything. Can't blame Game Freak, because it might be Nintendo/TPCi pushing Game Freak into tight schedules. Can't blame Nintendo/TPCi, because it might be Game Freak's decision after all. And so on, and so forth. Don't get me wrong, scapegoating doesn't help but as long as it's somewhat reasonably speculated, why not? There might be a hint of truth to it...or something.
