SwSh Dynamax: Thoughts, Feelings, or Concerns

Saw the trailer. Gigantamaxing looks cool. One problem: new fairy Pokemon, Alcremie's G-Form is lame. A giant cake? really? Sorry, but the other two forms look way more intimidating, especially Drednaw's.

I mean, this is kinda what happened with Hidden Grottos in Pokémon B2W2 as well, where you could get “special” Pokémon only in certain areas, with the most useful ones or the ones with the best HAs being relegated to late game / post-game stuff.

It’s more meant as a bonus / treasure hunt thing than anything, and you can always hold off on catching X Pokémon until you reach a point where you can get a special one.
To me, this is completely different. HAs, special moves, etc, are all basically a competitive thing. Your Pokémon will look the same either way, it'll just perform differently. What we're talking about here is a new design that is meant to be cool and also is not available to any species of that Pokémon you come across in the wild. It's like having to hunt for a Pokémon that can mega evolve (and replace your friend) instead of being able to get a mega stone and have your friend mega evolve.

contrary to its saccharine idealistic navel-gazing, pokémon has always been a series that rewards those who would rather choose to stab their beloved partners in the back and replace them with statistically optimized eugenic horrors
The series has been amusingly enough increasing focus on this, too, from IVs to egg moves to Hidden Abilities. Gen I just had IV (Or IV equivalents). Looks like one more for the pile, even after the "you know I'd be really sad to think that for them, Pokémon is hatching eggs," interview from last year.

When I was playing Pokémon to try getting a Battle Facility viable team I was more ruthless and uncaring for my partners than when I play, say, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a game about playing an ambitious, 3rd century warlord.

Giga will act differently than Dyna, especially because Gigas have the exclusive G-Max Moves as well.

I see Gigas as a series of “mini-quests” meant to reward the player with something cool, not unlike the quests you have to complete to get special weapons from various Japanese RPGs.

Besides, if Giga were as easy to get as Dyna, it would greatly diminish their uniqueness, too. At least we’ll get some kind of subquest, which is something that people have been screaming for since forever.

So, Mega-evos and Z-moves copied and combined into a new cheesy gimmick to entertain audiences while the bussiness is run by pimps and calculist "ladies"...I certainly won't miss Generation VIII.

Weird that they didnt do Gigantamax change Drednaws typing? If its a mono type then it would be cool to make it water/dragon. Really weird. Maybe Gigantamax has stats changes?

It's heavily implied, reading Gigantamax Alcremie's descriptions saying it can take physical attacks better. Implying an increase in Defense

Wally even makes a point of it in ORAS.

Can gym leaders gigantamax? Would be interesting... First dynamax it and then gigantamax? Or gigantamax without dynamaxing? Also 3 turns? Drednamws move seems to work like water move +stealth rocks.

I wonder. Given that Drednaw has a Gigantamax form, they might’ve decided to ‘cover’ it for the demo with the regular Dynamax. It can certainly make gym battles more challenging (expecially Nessa’s, because a strong Grass Pokémon is going to annihilate Drednaw).

Maybe during Gym Rematches (if there are any) their aces will have Gigantamax forms?
Possibly. I just hope it’s something included from the start, because of the challenge: having a Gigantamax Pokémon means they’re stronger then the average Dynamax one, and give that the MC often has the advantage of using more Pokémon and not being restricted to a monotype, it can balance things out,

Even better it would be if the Gigantamax option is something we can pick in a hard mode or difficulty sliders.

But means it those pokemon have no more other evolutions? If yes then they could at least make gigantamax get other typing. Drednaw water/dragon and the cake fairy/ghost

The problem is that the leak suggested that not only final stages get Gigantamax form. We’ll have to wait and see.

I was quite sure Corviknight wasn’t going to have another stage because it was described as the strongest Pokémon in Galar skies. Drednaw was also stated to be difficult to tame, so it’s not surprising that both might not have another form.

I thought serebii said that in order to get a pokemon that can gigantamax you have to catch it in one of those max raid battles otherwise it will only dynamax

I’m not sure of what you mean. I didn’t dispute that in my part about Drednaw and Corviknight’s Gigantamax forms being available only to those that are caught in Max Raids.

If it’s about the gym leaders having them, it’s not that irrealistic.
