Controversial opinions

Everything actually related to the SM games in the S&M anime is Filler because it's never brought up or referenced outside of those episodes

The only time it's brought up is in other Filler, like Lusamine thanking Ash for his help with her family happening in the play episode

Which means SM's Filler has more continuity than the canon episodes

They brought up saving Lusamine during the Necrozma arc, which I wouldn't really count as filler. I also don't understand this definition of filler. Since when does being referenced in later episodes determine whether or not an event is filler? Filler also doesn't mean that it isn't canon. They reference filler episodes or one shot characters pretty frequently in SM, so episodes like Ash and Kiawe going to see all of those Pikachu isn't suddenly non-canon just because it's filler.

Then by all means, show me when they reference the Ultra Beasts/Aether/Necrozma arcs in other episodes that aren't connected to them

Edit: Honestly, I’d like to give him some constructive criticism so he can improve, as he does have talent and skill, but I don’t really understand Japanese.

If I lived in Japan and knew how to speak Japanese, I'd take him under my wing and mentor him in the art of writing. But I feel like I'd do more harm than good and the anime would become some kind of josei series that y'all would hate.

Also while on the subject of the anime's production staff, I don't get the praise for Iwane. I respect him to some extent since he's been working on the anime since the Kanto saga and he was in charge of animating some great episodes like Volcanic Panic and Pallet Party Panic, but I dislike the way that certain fans treat him like some kind of god or the second coming of Takeshi Shudo in terms of seniority.

We...don't?

He's just a very good animator and puts a lot of effort into making his work look good, compared to some animators

Where does this logic of "these episodes are filler because they aren't referenced in other episodes that aren't connected to them" come from? I don't think I've heard it before SM. Most incorrect uses of the term filler I've heard before usually boil down to "This episode is bad/boring, so it is filler." This just comes off as a stretch at best to complain about SM more than anything else.

Why does it matter that much if they're referenced in episodes that aren't connected to them? It doesn't change that important events happen during the Aether and Necrozma arcs. As much as I dislike the Aether arc, it was still important for Lillie's storyline. There was buildup to the Necrozma arc, particularly with Poipole, so that was still important. I wouldn't say that there is an Ultra Beast arc. Assuming that you're referring to the Ultra Guardian episodes, those are spread out throughout the series instead of a specific arc. I don't think that they're filler per say, especially when there could be some last big mission for the Ultra Guardians before SM wraps up. Again, not being referenced in episodes that aren't connected to them doesn't make them filler. This is one of the strangest definitions I've seen for the term.

I'm just basing my claim off the fact that I constantly see people let out sighs of relief whenever Iwane is revealed to be in charge of animating episodes and the fact that people often act like his Twitter and blog are some kind of Pokemon anime gospel. But Iwane likes cats, so I guess I can let it slide.

I actually don't mind Ash's Pikachu not knowing Volt Tackle anymore. I personally thought the move made Pikachu "too special". Sure, the moves it has learned since then to replace its "slot" in his moveset may have been learned in questionable ways, but still, I personally don't miss Volt Tackle all that much.

I really hope not. Everything about how they utilized the Ultra Guardians as basically a Sentai parody has me cringe every time that they appear. It just feels like everything from them having a transformation sequence, color coordinated uniforms where each get their own color (seriously, why was this necessary? Those suits do nothing and they’ve been shown perfectly capable without then), them having a command center under the school and how they try to treat it seriously in-universe even when it’s treated more as a joke just takes the piss out of everything they appear in.

It still doesn't feel like a Sentai parody to me. It seems more like a nod towards that genre, but asking why the uniforms are necessary is a pretty valid point. I still don't think that the Ultra Beasts episodes are that bad. Admittedly, there are a few too many episodes where the so called Guardians of Alola look too incompetent for that title, but it doesn't really come off as a complete joke to me in every episode. The main reason why I brought up that possibility was because I don't know if they are building up to something with the Ultra Guardians. It might be more accurate to refer to those episodes as a subplot rather than a traditional arc considering how spread out those episodes are, so there could be something more down the road, especially when they should still have a couple of months left after the Alola League wraps up.

I still don't understand how not being referenced in episodes not connected to them makes the episode filler either, so again, the complaint just sounds more like another way to complain about SM more than anything else.

“Too special” when literally every Pikachu and Raichu could learn it in the anime?
“Too special” would be Pikashunium Z.

"too special"? Its the Pikachu line signature move any of them can learn it.

That will join the club too if it goes unexplained.

Still, it's only those few.

If you’re arguing that Volt Tackle is somehow a part of the club, then Pikashunium Z, explained or unexplained is the head of the club. Somehow providing an explanation wouldn’t take it out of the club since Volt Tackle has logic behind it and you class it as "too special".

Pikashunium Z: Literally never seen before Z-Move which pops up in specially convenient circumstances which only a specific Pikachu owned by a specific trainer can use.

Volt Tackle: A fairly popular signature move used by the Pikachu line, and any Pichu, Pikachu or Raichu has the potential to use it.

That’s like saying that Marowak's Shadow Bone is 'too special', of Mimikyu's disguise is 'too special'.

I have my own unique taste in things, okay? This thread has its title for a good reason.

I guess you can have unique taste in things.
Just pointing out that "Volt Tackle is less special than 10,000,000 Thunderbolt" is an objective fact...
I meant that if Pikachu's signature Z-Move goes unexplained for the rest of the series... You know what, I think you're right. It's already pretty overly special.

I respect Iwane a ton, but I can't really put him on a pedestal like some people do. The man is like a factory, he does produce a lot high quality animation on a regular basis, but his work doesn't shine on quality as much as it does in quantity, which is absolutely fine, and even necessary in the animation industry.

To be honest, Iwane isn’t the only favourite animator I like. In fact, we have folks like Aito Ohashi, Yasushi Nishitani and the former Akihiro Tamagawa that did God’s work in terms of animation too.
