Review JN064: The Detested Absol

Well this episode made me simultaneously dislike Goh, and like him.
First off, what the hell is wrong with Goh for attempting to capture a Snorunt from a place that is clearly it’s family? I’m glad Absol interrupted that! Secondly, yes, I did forget that he has a Trapinch, and wow, Grookey looks incredibly weak (So glad he was chosen to show off the creature, when it looks like it’s just Oshawott/Chespin 2.0 without any battling...)
At least he offered to release Absol, which shows he made a connection?

I only wanted Satoshi getting Absol, due to one AG intro that gave a scene just for it.
I wouldn't have minded if Houji, who was hyped and ended up disappointing, caught it.

But alas, there are things that couldn't be.
We had an AG rehash with a touch of the Suicune idiot plot.

I'm not sure why people on the Internet are getting super mad at Goh for catching Absol when it would have done f'all with Ash (hence why I want him to not catch ANYTHING else right now). It's clear the staff don't care about any of Ash's mons (yes, even Pikachu since he too hasn't done much for months now) so it's not like it would have fared any better other than making a cameo in Cerise's lab and disappearing for the next 180 months.
I'm sure they care of Ash's Pokémon. Last and next week's episodes are good proofs of that, with Dracovish getting much-deserved action.

Well, I guess everyone’s back to hating this series now—not that this episode did much of anything to help that, since it fell into all those pitfalls Journeys tends to fall into. I was hoping that it’d continue the trend of the past few episodes, especially since it’s about one of my favorite ‘mons, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Also, what the heck is people’s problem with Goh saving a Pokemon by catching them—you know, what he does best? Especially when he gives them a choice to leave afterwards, showing that there was nothing selfish in his intentions? Oh, wait; this is Goh we’re talking about. People love to make excuses to hate the kid.

Y’know, I kind of wish Absol had chosen to stay in Lavaridge; it would have been a nice twist, and if that had happened, maybe people would actually be thinking better of Goh (unlikely). I must admit, though, if I was Absol, I’d rather stick with the kid who saved my life than ungrateful ingrates who hated me despite my services.

A Pokémon not getting acknowledged till 10+ episodes after capture is hardly " care". And where is Gengar? Poor thing got abandoned again (by the writers, not in the anime universe).

Being caught adds the compel factor.
Even if it is offered the choice to leave, there's already an uneven terrain.

Sounds like Stockholm syndrome to me...

Yes, because a Pokémon that was just caught would totally develop Stockholm syndrome.

Also, isn’t that normally used in context of abusers and the abused? Something which Goh and Absol aren’t?

Not to mention Ash couldn’t be assed to test it in any sparring if him not knowing its moves last episode was any indication.

Journeys also has this uncanny ability of shoving Cinderace and Lucario down our throats while simultaneously having them not do anything for huge periods of time.

This wasn’t the most boring episode of journeys but it can’t compare to the original AG Absol episode, which had a more tense feeling!

Lets be honest at this point everytime Goh has an episode that is a 'him' episode (aka a capture or development bit) we tend to dislike it.

Ideally the Ash episode should balance it out, but Goh does things in the Ash episodes while not vice versa, so the hate grows.

...I honestly think fans are territorial about male protagonists. Goh's just the Boruto or Jason to Ash's Naruto or Percy, for two examples.

(I think Digimon has a similar thing with stuff like 2, but I don't want to poke that bees nest. Also last time I looked at the fandom was a nasty nest of cultural hiccups and incestous interest, unless that last part was a hallucination and the head writer didn't confirm that part....)

I never liked Jason. I thought he seemed extremely dull compared to Percy and Nico.

Which Digimon....?
The reboot also has Tomioka writing.

Satoshi is almost a carton cutout at this point.

There is probably a better example but I think my idea came across. I don't think Percy fans necessarily have the same issue with Leo or Hazel, for example. Leo is more of a Clemont type than a Goh type role and importance wise.

...Though I actually like Jason more than Leo during the last two books. But that's besides the point
