Because not every user is going to understand that it’s hyperbolic. Some would just think that the hyperbolic ad hominem he was using was genuinely accurate. Hyperbole is also an argumentative fallacy. It doesn’t do anything to actually justify one’s position. I like that you clarify this when needed, but that was not done here.A question: If you know something is a hyperbole, and thus a literary device, why would you take it to its literal interpretation? It has happened in a few instances with me as well, to the point that I usually clarify that it’s a hyperbole to prevent having to argue on what's basically a literally device. I prong use hyperboles any more because I thought that maybe I wasn’t being clear enough on it NOT being literal but here a clear awareness of it being a literary device has been shown so I was curious.
If you have any issues with people using hyperboles, it’s fine but I find it weird to call them out for using a literary device, trying to get them to prove its literal validity (when it’s a literary device) and then telling them it’s a hyperbole. I’d just like to understand how to handle hyperboles here. I guess it’s not the correct thread but I’m not sure what’s the exact thread to ask about literary devices on these forums.
I don’t have a problem with people using hyperbole in general, I especially do have an issue when people use it as part of an accusation or attack about myself or others and I’m not fond of it being used to justify one’s position.
