You should definitely try the other games. Shadow Dragon is some good background for Awakening but it's not that fun. FE7 and Sacred Stones are however, and you can usually get them as ROMs on emulators.

No, Monterey is usually colder than it is in Salinas. It's also easier for the marine layer to reach Monterey as it is along the coast.
