The biggest problem is that we were just too damn existential. We'd jam for 10-15 minutes, then just start talking about space and the meaning of life. I played keys, so I had my whole array of synths at my fingertips which was really cool. Unfortunately we didn't have a drummer, so that kind of crippled my two friends' ideas. I agree, though. Making music just to please yourself is a lot easier than including others. It tends to sound better, too. Especially when everyone has a different direction that they want to go with the music.
