You can only get onto Nintendo tech forums with an American Club Nintendo account, so I emailed Nintendo. They've only just replied, but they weren't very helpful (they didn't understand that we were trying to trade via Wi-fi not wireless). We could try again and see if the problem's sorted itself out.
